Second Division eye catchers
By Stuart Roach

With the new Second Division campaign just days away, several teams will fancy their chances of promotion.

Division Two has more than its fair share of matchwinners, from the young up and coming stars to the veteran campaigners.

We spotlight a handful of players to keep an eye out for over the coming season.

Chris Armstrong

Chris Armstrong - Wrexham

At the age of 32, Armstrong is aiming to put his injury-wrecked career back on track.

Now back at the club where his professional career started, Armstrong has endured a nightmare two-year spell.

Injury terminated his Premiership years with Spurs and Armstrong failed to revive his career at Bolton last season.

But if he can get fit and avoid further injury then Armstrong could easily take his frustrations out on the Second Division this season.

Brentford striker Mark Peters
Peters has looked convincing in pre-season
Mark Peters -
Brentford

Was hailed as the new Alan Shearer in his apprentice days at Southampton, but Peters failed to make a similar breakthrough at The Dell.

By the time Saints moved, so had Peters, with Brentford looking to tap in on the striker's undoubted goalscoring talents when they signed him on a free transfer in February last year.

Last season remained one of development in the reserves for the diminutive frontman but Peters possesses a vicious shot as he demonstrated with his first senior goal for the club against QPR at the end of the season.

Still only 19, the 5ft 9in striker looks ripe to develop into the regular provider of goals he has always threatened to become.

Tommy Doherty

Tommy Doherty -
Bristol City

A steadying influence on the City midfield last season as they revved up their drive to the play-offs.

His consistency earned him a call-up to the Northern Ireland squad and the 24-year-old excelled against Italy and Spain.

An instant hit with the Irish fans, Doherty is aiming to keep more established Premiership and First Division players out of the international picture.

Ended speculation linking him with a move away by signing a new deal in the summer.

Sam Parkin
Sam Parkin scored 26 goals last season
Sam Parkin - Swindon

Struck 26 goals last season as the Robins finished the campaign strongly for a mid-table finish.

And there could be plenty more where they came from as the arrival of Tommy Mooney as his new strike partner could help take Parkin to another level.

A product of the Chelsea youth system, Parkin struggled to find his feet during loan spells at Millwall, Wycombe and Oldham.

But the 22-year-old now looks very much at home after a prolific first year with Swindon.

Luke Beckett
Beckett is consistently among the goals
Luke Beckett - Stockport

A proven goalscorer in the lower divisions, Beckett's progress has been steady rather than spectacular.

Prolific as a youngster, Beckett scored 25 goals in 74 games for Chester City before playing a key role in Chesterfield's 2000-01 promotion campaign.

Joined Stockport in a 100,000 deal last season and ended the campaign as top scorer with seven goals from seven starts.

Now 26, this season represents a real chance for Beckett to prove he is not destined to be forever known as a lower division dangerman.

Kem Izzet
Kem Izzet is following in Muzzy's footsteps

Kem Izzett - Colchester

The younger and lesser-known brother of Leicester's Muzzy, Izzett's fine end to the season mirrored Colchester's own renaissance.

Eight goals from midfield displayed his attacking credentials but the 22-year-old's all-round skills make him an exciting prospect.

Six years younger than his Turkish international brother, Kem's progress as a youngster was stifled when Muzzy used to force him to go in goal during park kickabouts.

But Izzet the younger now appears to be flourishing and this could be the year when he truly comes of age.
