Hessenthaler played more than 350 games for Gillingham
Dover Athletic boss Andy Hessenthaler has said he is considering having a more active playing role.
Hessenthaler was sent off six minutes after coming on as a substitute in his first appearance of the season against Eastleigh on Saturday.
But the 44-year-old former Gillingham midfielder and manager thinks he is the type of player Dover need on the pitch.
He said: "We need a few characters in there. I feel fit enough and maybe it needs me in there at the moment."
Dover were knocked out of the FA cup 5-3 by Eastleigh on Saturday.
And Hessenthaler said: "Maybe I do need to come back in, we need voices and organisation, and someone to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
If he does play he will line up alongside former Gillingham team-mate Nicky Southall, who is 37.
"We've had such a good time over the past two and a bit years," Hessenthaler added. "We are still in a very good position in the league and I think if we made the play-offs that would be a major achievement for us."
