| SA untroubled by Burundi ![]() Mayo's header put South Africa ahead South Africa consolidated their position at the top of Group 11 with a comfortable 2-0 win over Burundi in their African Cup of Nations qualifier played in Bloemfontein on Sunday. Bafana Bafana deserved their win against a Burundian side that were completely outgunned in midfield, where Teboho Mokoena, Delron Buckley and MacBeth Sibaya did as they pleased. South Africa's dominance was illustrated by the fact that their goalkeeper, Andre Arendse, wasn't called on to make a single save for the entire 90 minutes. The Burundians managed to get into good goalscoring positions on a few occasions but their strikers were woefully off target. Patrick Mayo headed Bafana Bafana into the lead after 13 minutes when he met a cross from the impressive Buckley who brushed off the attentions of two Burudian defenders down the left. The goal had a touch of good fortune about it as it went straight through the legs of Burundian goalkeeper Aime Kitenge, who seemed to have the ball covered.
The German-based midfielder did well to place his acute angled shot wide of Kitenge with the outside of his left boot. The South Africans seemed to content with their lead in the second half. They failed to convert the glut of possession and their territorial dominance into goals in a low-key second period when the heat seemed to take its toll on the players. |
