Bartlett's endurance test
Charlton's South African striker Shaun Bartlett
Bartlett faces a long round trip
Shaun Bartlett will endure 22 hours on a plane after the South African FA insisted on double-checking the Charlton striker's injury.

Bartlett withdrew from Bafana Bafana's squad for the African Nations Cup qualifier against Burundi after sustaining a groin injury in Charlton's Premiership defeat at Fulham.

The South African FA has insisted on verifying Bartlett's injury, despite Charlton's insistence he will not be fit to face Burundi.

The Addicks are hoping that Bartlett will be fit to face to face Middlesbrough at The Valley next Saturday, providing there are no complications to his injury.

Charlton boss Alan Curbishley reluctantly released Bartlett for the Nations Cup finals in January, where the striker picked up a serious injury which ruined the rest of his season.

Bartlett, South Africa's all-time top scorer, is already en route to Bloemfontein, the first-half of an 11,000-mile round trip of 11 hours each way.

A Charlton spokesman said: "Shaun has been forced to travel to South Africa, even though his injury is likely to keep him out of the game.

"We would have preferred him to stay in England, but the South African FA asked him to make the journey so he can be assessed by their own doctor.

"It seems unfortunate Shaun is making the trip if he's not going to play.

"But as we don't have a game for another week, it's not something that will disrupt our preparations too much."
