Former Nigeria captain Austin Jay Jay Okocha has declared his interest in running for a leadership position in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The NFF has been rocked by various problems of late involving corruption and an age-test scandal in the national under-17 team.

And Okocha believes it is now time for a change in football administration in the country.

"Enough is enough of the rot in Nigerian football," Okocha told a press conference in Lagos.

"The time for change is now."

Most Nigerian fans also believe that the Super Eagles failed to live up to expectations at the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola despite coming third.

The tenure of the present board led by Sanni Lulu Abdullahi will come to an end in August when new elections will be held.

Okocha is already a member of a presidential task force set up to help monitor the Super Eagles' preparation for the 2010 World Cup.

He played in all of Nigeria's previous World Cup appearances and was part of the gold-medal winning team at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.

Okocha said he would use his experience in the game to help Nigerian football.

"Those of us who have played the game at the highest levels of club and country must desist from just sitting on the sidelines," he said.

"We cannot continue to leave the running of the sport to career civil servants and politicians alone."

The former Bolton, Hull City and PSG midfielder also promised to revitalise the local league.

"For me, the answer is simple. The quality of our domestic league remains a key element in ensuring a strong Super Eagles team.

Former Nigerian internationals Sunday Oliseh, Emeka Ezeugo and Taribo West have also been critical of football administration in Nigeria.
