Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu has criticised the management style of West Brom boss Bryan Robson, blaming him for the team's poor position in the English Premiership.
In an interview published in the latest edition of KickOff, a Nigerian football magazine, Kanu said Robson's poor judgement in the transfer market is responsible for their place in the relegation zone.
"The team is full of inexperienced players," Kanu complained to the magazine.
"They have not been serious about getting experienced players.
"I advised them on several occasions on the type of players they should get but they refused to heed my advice," said the two-time African Footballer of the Year.
Kanu, who scored Nigeria's second goal in their 2-0 defeat of Gabon in their last World Cup qualifier, said he was unfairly stripped of the captaincy at West Brom.
"It was very dirty politics that cost me the team's captaincy," the striker went on.
"The management felt I was getting on their nerves when I advised them to get quality players.
"They felt I was too outspoken and at the same time putting undue pressure on them.
"I was not dropped for my football, but purely on politics," Kanu told the magazine.
Danusa Ocholi, the writer who interviewed Kanu for KickOff, told BBC Sport that he was "surprised" by the comments.
"I was surprised that he made these remarks to me, as he knows I am a journalist and I had every intention of putting them in print," Ocholi said from Nigeria on Thursday.
Robson told BBC Sport that he was also "surprised" about the comments attributed to Kanu.
"I do not expect these type of remarks from a player of his calibre. I hope he was misquoted," said the former England captain.
"It does surprise me that he made these comments. But I have not been in the position to strengthen the squad.
"I will speak to Kanu about it [when I return to England]," Robson added.
BBC Sport tried to reach Kanu but he was unavailable for comment.
