Australia seized control of the second Test against Pakistan after an innings of 142 by Damien Martyn.

His six-hour innings, which featured 12 fours, enabled his side to total 379 in their first innings, a lead of 38.

Martyn shared an eight wicket stand of 93 with Jason Gillespie, who made 50, while paceman Shoaib Akhtar finished with figures of 5-109.

Glenn McGrath took two wickets with the new ball as Pakistan slumped to 85-5 in reply at end end of the third day.

The first session of play was limited to 50 minutes because of rain, but there was time enough for Pakistan to pick up two wickets.

Adam Gilchrist was first to go, caught by Mohammad Sami off Danish Kaneria for 48, and Shane Warne gave a return catch to Shoaib off the final ball before the interval after making 10.

But Martyn found a reliable partner in Gillespie, whose unbeaten 107-ball half century, which included a six and four fours, was only the second of his Test career.

They saw Australia past Pakistant's first innings total before Martyn was finally trapped lbw by Kaneria.

His century was sixth in Tests this year and lifted his overall runs tally to 1,353, a figure exceeded only by team-mate Justin Langer.

Shoaib claimed his fifth victim when Michael Kasprowicz was caught by substitute Naved-ul-Hasan, who was on the field because Abdul Razzaq had been taken to hospital suffering from dizziness and shortness of breath.

Kaneria ended Australia's innings when he had last man McGrath lbw for one, giving him figures of 5-125.

But McGrath proved far more effective in his main job as he removed Salman Butt for nought with his fourth delivery, with Kasprowicz taking the catch at mid-wicket.

Imran Farhat's run of poor form continued when he fell to Gillespie after making only five, and McGrath claimed his second victim when Yasir Hameed (23) edged to the keeper.

Yousuf Youhana and Younis Khan, who shared a stand of 192 on the opening day found themselves together again with only 35 on the board.

But this time they were only together for nine overs as leg-spinner Warne had Youhana taken by Ricky Ponting for 12.

Kasprowicz struck the final blow with a well directed bouncer which accounted for Younis, who was taken in the gully for 23 off the toe of his bat as he tried to hook.
