Bell and Kevin Pietersen (41) then cantered home with 22 balls left.
Earlier, debutant Michael Yardy took 3-24 as Pakistan slumped to 117-6 but Abdul Razzaq (75) hit five sixes and 69 came in four overs as they made 235-8.
LATEST ACTION (all times BST)
ENGLAND INNINGS
47th over: Pietersen finishes the match off with a swat over long-on for four. An eight-wicket victory for England to make the series 2-1 with one match remaining and end England's dismal streak in one-day matches.237-2
46th over: Glorious cover-drive for four by Bell off Afridi. Just four more needed. 232-2
45th over: Hafeez is on. Pakistan are getting very scrappy in the field, with Pietersen running three off a wide down the leg-side. Five from the over, just nine needed. 227-2
44th over: Afridi is on and Bell drives him through the covers for one. Pietersen tickles Afridi round the corner, although umpire Harper says it's two leg-byes. An inside edge from Pietersen gets four. 222-2
43rd over: Pietersen looks to have shaken off his early nerves and dumps Naved over deep mid-wicket for four. Naved keeps Pietersen honest with a bumper. Undeterred, Pietersen slams the final ball of the over straight down the ground for another four. Fourteen from the over. 218-2
42nd over: Pakistan aren't doing themselves any favours and Razzaq puts down a decent caught and bowled chance from Bell. Pietersen then plays a wonderful shot, taking a few steps down the pitch and whipping the ball to the deep mid-wicket boundary. England only need 32 runs to win now. 204-2
41st over: Naved is back on and Bell paddles his first ball into the on-side for one. Pietersen plays a back-foot drive which Inzamam does well to stop at short extra-cover. Bell plays a sketchy cut down to third man for one. 198-2
40th over: Pietersen is still scratching about a bit at the other end from Bell. Just as I write that, Pietersen times Razzaq straight down the pitch for four. 195-2
39th over: Bell mows Shoaib away for a couple and sends the final ball of the over racing to the extra-cover boundary with an exquisite cover-drive. Just to rub Shoaib's nose in it, he holds the follow-through for a few seconds. Lovely touch. 191-2
"Much more of your treatment, Goochie, and you'll have a ponytail like Shoaib. I'd say dear old Fred Trueman would have something to say about the fastest bowler in the world having a ponytail..." TMS commentator Jonathan Agnew
38th over: A bit of slapstick for the Nottingham faithful, Pietersen clipping Razzaq to mid-wicket and Naved slipping, climbing to his feet, and slipping over again before fielding the ball. To Naved's horror, the comedy is replayed on the giant screen and Pietersen runs four. It was like something from 1970's TV classic It's a Knockout, except Naved isn;t wearing a pair of giant shoes. 184-2
37th over: Shoaib is back on, maybe Inzamam's final throw of the die. Pietersen throws his bat at one and gets a thick outside edge for a single. Bell drives and the ball eludes Inzamam in the covers. Four from the over. 177-2
36th over: Cracking shot from Pietersen, on-driving Razzaq for four. Inzamam, fielding at short extra-cover, then puts a fairly straightforward chance down, although it was going at about 1000mph. Pietersen gets an inside edge, but the ball evades his stumps. 173-2
35th over: Bell, looking to clip Asif through mid-wicket, gets a leading edge and the ball just drops over Shoaib's head deep extra-cover. Another inside edge from Bell, and Asif looks to have his number. Despite Bell's travails, it's six from the over and Asif is finished for the night. Relief for England. 167-2
34th over: Bell gets two to extra-cover before flailing and missing a Razzaq bouncer. Razzaq then beats Bell again, and the Warwickshire man has really been knocked out of his stride by Asif. Bell gets another single down to third man and Pietersen takes a quick single. Six from the over. Drinks. 161-2
33rd over: Asif bounces Bell and the batsman slightly mis-times a pull down to deep mid-wicket for two. Bell attempts an expansive drive but misses. Asif is giving Bell a real working over, and beats Bell's outside edge again. Bell finally gets off the strike with a single but Pietersen gets a brute from Asif, the ball leaving him and just missing everything. 155-2
32nd over: Pietersen brings up the 150 with a push down the ground. Hafeez beats Bell with a quicker delivery, but there are four from the over. 152-8
31st over: The always dangerous Asif is back into the attack. Bell drives and misses the final delivery, and it's a maiden. 148-2
30th over: WICKET - England 148-2 (Strauss b Hafeez 78)
Hafeez makes the breakthrough after skipper Strauss misses a straightish delivery. A disappointing end to a fine innings.
29th over: Strauss and Bell are making this look easy. The skipper cuts Malik powerfully for four and Pakistan need several wickets soon to stem the flow of runs. 146-1
28th: It's decision time for Inzamam - should he bring back Asif to make a breakthrough? He opts for more spin by throwing the ball to Hafeez. A good delivery finds Bell's edge but it races away for his eighth boundary to complete a well-constructed sixth ODI fifty off 53 balls. It also brings up the century partnership off 108 balls. 140-1
27th over: With runs coming too easily for Inzamam's liking, he brings on another spinner in Malik. But Inzy is motionless when Strauss' drive sends the ball whistling a couple of centimetres past him at extra-cover. He doesn't look too bothered - neither have his team to be honest. 133-1
26th over: Strauss steers Afridi away for two before Inzamam pulls off a very sharp stop at short extra-cover to deny Bell a single. Bell laces the final ball past Inzy for four. 127-1
25th over: Strauss gets a sketchy top-edge down to third man and he and Shoaib engage in a friendly bit of banter. Four from the over. 118-1
24th over: Akmal claims a stumping, but umpire Harper makes it clear what he thinks of the appeal with an exaggerated call of wide. Afridi drops one in short and Strauss yanks the ball away for four. 114-123rd over: Inzamam, perhaps sensing the game is running away from him, turns to Shoaib. He gives Bell some chin music first up, but Bell just sways out of the line. Strauss edges the last ball of the over for four. 106-1
22nd over: Inzamam turns to spin, and Afridi's first over yields just one single. 101-1
21st over: Bell cracks Naved through the covers for four before getting an outside edge that runs away to the third-man boundary. Bell composes himself and clips the next ball to the mid-wicket boundary. Strauss brings up his 11th one-day 50 (from 72 balls) and England's 100 with a cover-drive for a couple. Fifteen from the over. 100-1
20th over: After his dodgy opening over, Razzaq is keeping it tight now - just three from the over. 85-1
19th over: Strauss drives uppishly, but the ball runs away for four through the covers. Naved, who is proving a handful, then squares Strauss up, but the ball just misses the top of off-stump. 82-1
18th over: Three from Razzaq's over, a tighter one from Pakistan's star batsman. 78-1
17th over: Naved beats Bell again outside the off-stump but the Warwickshire man gets two runs down to backward point. England still chugging along well enough. 75-1
16th over: Razzaq is on and still Bell is unable to locate the ball with the middle of his bat. But wait, he finds form in spectacular fashion with three successive cuts for four, the second of which is top-notch. Razzaq giveth, and he taketh away, or should that be the other way round?...Drinks. 71-1
15th over: The floodlights are slowly taking over from the sun at Trent Bridge. Bell nibbles at one from Naved outside the off-stump, but he's very late on it. Bell plays a lavish cut, but misses again. 57-1
14th over: Strauss times Asif straight through mid-off for four to bring up England's 50. Marcus Trescothick, England's 12th man, is crouched on the boundary and ready to bring Strauss out some new gloves. No-one's really sure what's wring with Tresco, but we wish him well all the same. 56-1
13th over: Strauss is struggling against Naved, but gets a single with a thick inside edge courtesy of a sketchy bit of fielding from Inzamam. 49-1
12th over: Bell drops the ball down to backward point and takes a sharp single, Strauss beating the catch quite comfortably. Umpire Harper turns down a big lbw appeal from Asif, but Bell got his leg well outside the line. Asif then chops Bell in half with a ball that jags back. Hairy times from Bell. 45-1
11th over: The lights are on now, feeble as they are, and England face a tough old task now to win this one. Strauss tucks Naved round the corner for four. Five from the over. 43-1
10th over:WICKET - England 38-1 (Joyce c Akmal b Asif 13)
Asif makes the breakthrough for the tourists, finding Joyce's edge with another ball that shapes away towards the slips. Akmal takes a good diving catch. New batsman Bell survives Asif's final ball.
9th over: Naved is on and he hurries Strauss with a short one, but the England opener manages to glove it down to fine-leg for four. England are ticking along quite nicely. 37-0
8th over: Asif drops one in short and Strauss pulls the ball away for three. Joyce then plays an unconvincing hook, but the ball finds open space. 31-0
7th over: Strauss makes some room and pierces the off-side field with a well-timed cut for four. Shoaib has got some beef with Joyce, who has to duck round the bowler after being sent back by Strauss. Pakistan clearly feel aggrieved about Inzy's catch that wasn't. 25-0
"In the old days you asked the fielder whether he'd taken the carch or not and you trusted what he said. Sometimes when you're diving forward you're convinced the ball went in, until you see the replays." TMS summariser Graham Gooch
6th over: Joyce skips down the pitch to Asif and drops the ball down into the leg-side for a single. Asif has a vigorous lbw appeal against Strauss turned down and tucks the England skipper up with the final delivery of the over. 19-0
5th over: Joyce pushes down the ground for a single, and there's just one from the over. 18-0
4th over: Strauss tucks Asif away for four through mid-wicket. Asif hits back with one that passes the outside edge. A bit of controversy next ball, the England skipper edging to Inzamam at first slip. Inzy claims the catch, but Strauss stands his ground and the third umpire adjudges the ball bounced into Inzamam's hands. Strauss tucks Asif round the corner for four. Inzy's got the raging hump and lets off steam to the umpires, to boos from the Nottingham crowd. 17-0
3rd over: Strauss gets England going with a cut for one off Shoaib. Joyce gets off the mark with a Goweresque drive through the covers for four. Dreamy. Shoaib then tries to deceive Joyce with a slower ball, but it comes out as a full-toss and Joyce pushes it away with little bother. Shoaib over-pitches again and Joyce gets another four through extra-cover. Joyce wafts and misses Shoaib's last delivery. He's more like Gower than I thought... 9-0
2nd over: Asif is getting the ball to shape nicely across Joyce and towards the slips and he manages to find the edge, but the ball falls just short of Inzy. Another maiden. 0-0
"Having seen England's spinners get quite a lot of spin, I expect Pakistan's fast-bowlers to be bowling quite a lot of slower balls, running their fingers across the seam." TMS summariser Graham Gooch
1st over: The clearing up has finished after Razzaq's frenzied attack and England's batsmen are out earlier than expected. Joyce is Strauss' opening partner. A maiden to start with from Shoaib. 0-0
PAKISTAN INNINGS
50th over: Razzaq, like some rabid beast that has already devoured one victim, turns his attention to Lewis and slams him over extra-cover for another six. This is carnage. Lewis' penultimate ball is sent flat and fizzing into the crowd and the final ball is sent steepling over long-on for yet another maximum. Twenty-one from the last over and 69 from the last four. Quite extraordinary. Razzaq finishes with 75 from 72 balls and, just like that, England have an honest target to chase. 235-8
49th over: A bouncer from Mahmood, which has Razzaq ducking. Razzaq then flogs a Mahmood slower ball over the rope for six. Lusty. Once Mahmood has been nudged out off the rails, he seems to find it very difficult to get back on track. His next ball is a wide that runs away for four and he follows up with four leg-byes. Razzaq piles into the next delivery and dumps it over mid-wicket for another maximum. The penultimate ball is mown over extra-cover and the final ball is put over the top for a single. Twenty-six from the over. Do you reckon Strauss wishes he had kept Broad on? 214-8
48th over: Razzaq crashes Lewis away for four before Read, standing up, almost stumps him next ball. Razzaq then makes some room and smears Lewis over extra-cover for another four. It's all happening at the fag-end of Pakistan's innings, Naved getting an outside edge that dribbles away for a couple. 188-8
47th over: Mahmood of Lancashire is back on. Razzaq tries to make some room but is unable to pull the ball away. Mahmood then makes Razzaq look a bit of a monkey with a cheeky slower ball which has the batsman wafting at thin air. Mahmood sends down a couple of wides and Naved gets off the mark with a couple down to third man. Mahmood tries another slow one, but Naved simply waits for it and slaps it to the mid-off boundary for four. 177-8
46th over:WICKET - Pakistan 165-8 (Shoaib c Joyce b Broad 10)
England lock their fearsome three-headed spin-beast back in its cage and Broad is back on. Strauss puts another one down at short extra-cover to give Shoaib a life, but Shoaib is out next ball, slicing a big heave down to Joyce at third man. The batsmen crossed, and Razzaq edges a single to put new man Naved on strike. Naved is beaten by a little peach that leaves him off the pitch.
45th over: Razzaq attampts to hoik Dalrymple into the River Trent and misses completely. Horrible. Shoaib succeeds where Razzaq failed, creaming the ball over mid-wicket for a maximum. Dalrymple finishes with figures of 1-38 from 10. 165-7
44th over: Razzaq takes a sharp run and Shoaib just makes his ground - a rare wild throw from Collingwood. Yardy finishes his spell and his figures are 3-24 from 10 overs. 157-7
"I expected Pakistan to win this match quite easy - I thought it was a 270 pitch. But they have been hurt quite badly by Yousuf's knock."
TMS summariser Rameez Raja
43rd over: Razzaq leans back and flashes Pietersen away for four through the off-side. Pietersen, who was quite a spin prospect as a boy, is getting some decent turn. Razzaq now has 26. 156-7
"England's spinners are making the pitch look like a mine-field..."
TMS summariser Graham Gooch
42nd over: Another ripper from Yardy, which has Shoaib lunging forward but which strikes him on the bicep. One from the over. 148-8
41st over: Just three from Pietersen's over and he's carrying on from where Dalrymple left off. The question now is, will Pakistan have a dart or just try to see out the 50 overs? 147-7
40th over: Watchful stuff from Razzaq against Yardy. Yardy shocks Shoaib with a lifter and the batsman is then beaten by a beauty from Yardy, the ball turning sharply. Umpire Benson adjudges there was no bat on it and it just misses off-stump. 144-7
39th over: Pietersen is on now and Pakistan face the frightening spectre of England's three-headed spin attack - Dalrymple, Yardy and Pietersen...Pietersen's first ball is a load of old rubbish and carted away for four by Razzaq. Shoaib is nearly beaten by a turning ball from Pietersen first up. 143-7
38th over:WICKET - Pakistan 138-7 (Akmal 10)
Yardy gets one to turn lavishly away from the thrusting Akmal and Akmal is out next ball, Strauss taking a sharp, low catch at slip with the batsman trying to run the ball away. Three wickets now for Yardy.
37th over: Akmal paddles Dalrymple round the corner for one before Razzaq offers up a crowd catch, the ball going into the ground and being taken by the bowler. Yardy then puts down a chance in the covers, Razzaq slamming a full-toss straight to him and the ball plopping out. 135-6
"England need bowlers at the Champions Trophy that are a bit different and capable of taking wickets. Lewis has proved his worth here and Panesar is by far and away England's best spin bowler and must come into the equation."
TMS summariser Graham Gooch
36th over: Yardy sends down a ripper, the ball pitching and cutting away from a startled looking Akmal. Four from the over and the players take drinks. 132-6
35th over: Akmal reaches wide outside of off-stump and sweeps Dalrymple down to fine-leg for one. Two from the over. 128-6
34th over: Five from Yardy's over, Pakistan just happy to milk England's slow bowlers for now. 126-6
33rd over: Another tight over from Dalrymple. Pakistan will be looking to settle before launching their rear-guard. Strauss puts down a difficult chance at slip, Akmal lunging and getting a thick outside edge. 121-6
32nd over: Akmal looks like he's giving Strauss catching practice, flicking Yardy just past the England skipper at slip. 119-6
31st over: WICKET - Pakistan 117-6 (Inzamam c&b Dalrymple 47) Dalrymple, John Regan has written in to tell us, looks like a young Gary Megson. He may or may not be too happy about that, but he gets the priceless wicket of Inzy, the Pakistan skipper gifting him a lollipop caught and bowled.
WICKET - Pakistan 115-4 (Malik c&b Yardy 0)
Yardy (The New Gilo?) gives one a bit more air and Malik dollies it straight back to him. Malik faced just two balls. Razzaq is the new batsman and lasts the over. Double-wicket maiden from Yardy.
30th over:WICKET - Pakistan 115-4 (Yousuf b Yardy 29)
Yardy, on debut, puts an end to Yousuf's tortuous innings. With his low, slingy action, he gets one to fizz off the pitch and beat Yousuf for pace. Yousuf's innings took 81 balls.
29th over: Yousuf misses out on a rank long-hop from Dalrymple, only getting one for it. Inzy pushes one to long-on for a single, Yousuf takes a run to long-off. 115-4
28th over: Yardy gets some turn and the lunging Yousuf is beaten. Yousuf, who looks very out of sorts, then hits one uppishly just short of point. 110-3
27th over: Dalrymple is in tandem with Yardy now, and he's doing a pretty decent job of keeping the runs down. Just three from the over. 108-3
26th over: Some left-arm 'stuff' from Yardy now. It's more slow-medium than any kind of spin. Pakistan nurdle four singles from the over. 105-3
25th over: Inzamam walks down the pitch and clubs Dalrymple through mid-off for four to bring up Pakistan's 100. Inzy has 39 and Yousuf 23. 101-3
24th over: Neat take from Read wide outside off-stump. Just as it seemed Pakistan were about to step things up, they've gone back into their shell. 94-3
23rd over: Nice, tight stuff from Dalrymple, just two from his second over. There is a sense of expectation in the ground now - just when are Inzy and his pal Yousuf going to giving it some tap? 88-3
22nd over: From the gentle spin of Dalrymple to the cosy seam of Collingwood. Yousuf gets a couple to deep extra-cover and is now Pakistan's third highest run-scorer in one-day internationals with 7,386, passing Javed Miandad. 86-3
21st over: Strauss turns to the gentle spin of Dalrymple and Inzamam misses out on a short one, although Dalrymple will tell you he missed out on a thin top-edge. 81-3
20th over: Broad drags one in short and Inzamam is on it in a flash, flicking it away for four. Yousuf, like a crazed prisoner flexing his muscles and breaking off his irons, laces Broad through the covers for four. Ten from the over. 78-3
19th over: Remarkable shot from Inzy, edging over to the off-side and whipping the ball round the corner for four like a fly-fisher casting a rod. Five from the over. 68-3
18th over: Broad comes back into the attack and has Yousuf flashing and missing outside off-stump. Yousuf looks a frustrated man. Yousuf then looks to have got an inside edge onto his pad, but the ball loops just short of wicket-keeper Read. A maiden from Broad. 63-3
17th over: Inzamam steers a square-drive away for four. Imperious. Mahmood then strays on to Inzy's legs and is swatted away for another boundary. Like an old uncle who has been shifting around in his favourite armchair for a few minutes trying to get comfortable, Inzamam has finally settled at the crease now and carves Mahmood away for a third four. A welcome release for Pakistan as players take drinks. 62-3
16th over: Just one from Lewis' eighth over, but he may take a break now and be saved for the death. It's been a tip-top spell from the Gloucestershire seamer. 51-3
15th over: Inzamam wafts airily and gets a thick edge which flies past the slip cordon. Inzamam misses out on a rare short one, but there are six from the over. Actually, one short - well spotted umpire Harper. 49-3
14th over: England are really getting in Pakistan's face here and cranking up the pressure. Lewis returns another maiden, England's third on the trot. When was the last time that happened? 44-3
13th over: Mahmood gives Inzamam a fright, getting one to rise alarmingly. Inzamam wafts his bat in front of his face like someone staving off a drunken attack in a kebab shop. Maiden over from Mahmood, who's slipped nicely into a groove today. 44-3
12th over: A sketchy cut from Yousuf off Lewis for a single, but the tourists are being well shackled at the moment. 44-3
11th over:WICKET - Pakistan 41-3 (Afridi lbw b Mahmood 23)
Clarke's blushes are spared as Mahmood accounts for Afridi, who appears just to miss a straight one. Inzamam strolls out with the air of a man about to take strike against his six-year-old nephew on Blackpool beach. This boy just doesn't do stress. Mahmood gets the Pakistan skipper fencing at one first up. 42-3
10th over: Lewis, like a pesky horsefly, will really be getting on Pakistan's nerves now. Afridi loses his rag and launches into an injudicious shot, but Rikki Clarke, on as a sub for Joyce, shells a lollipop running in from third man. Another fine, nagging over from Lewis. 41-2
9th over: Mahmood is wheeled into the England attack. He's taken some tap in this series and he has a chance to redeem himself. Joyce, back in the side after a bad ankle injury, is throwing himself around and makes another smart stop at mid-on. Two from the over and it's a tight one from Mahmood. 38-2
8th over: Lewis is putting on a swing master-class and has Yousuf groping at another ball that curves away. Lovely shape. Yousuf then gets a thick outside edge but the ball lands just wide of point. Afridi flails at a widish one and Joyce, running round from third man, just manages to stop the ball with his calf. 36-2
7th over: Afridi is a lucky boy, attempting to smash Broad down the ground and the ball landing in no-man's land at wide long-on. A couple of wides from Broad, but otherwise a decent over from the Leicestershire seamer. 32-2
6th over: Lewis has Afridi on strike and his first delivery is a real jaffer, pitching just outside off-stump and arcing across the face of Afridi's bat. Balls two and three are much the same and it's a fascinating contest. Lewis finally loses his line and Afridi's eyes light up like a Christmas tree as he flicks it away for four. 29-2
5th over: Afridi leans back and carves Broad away for four. A classic stroke. Afridi then plays a sketchy cut and just gets enough on it to bypass the slip cordon. 24-2
4th over:WICKET - Pakistan 17-2 (Younis c Collingwod b Lewis 0)
Lewis removes Younis with an absolute peach. The ball was curving away from the batsman from the moment it left Lewis' hand and Younis couldn't resist pushing his hands out towards it. No problem for Collingwood at second slip. Yousuf gets off the mark with a push through extra-cover. 19-2
3rd over: Afridi to face Broad. Afridi has an extraordinary strike-rate in one-dayers of 108, and he nudges it slightly higher with a spiralling six straight over Broad's head. It's his 216th maximum in one-day internationals. Broad responds well, getting Afridi to nibble at one just outside off-stump before doubling the batsman up with one that nips back.17-1
2nd over:WICKET - Pakistan 11-1 (Hafeez c Strauss b Lewis 8)
Lewis' first delivery is a nervy wide down the leg-side. Hafeez then blazes at a ball of good line and length and snicks it to Trescothick - sorry, I mean Strauss - at first slip. Younis, fresh from his superb ton at Trent Bridge, is next man in. A mean first over from Gloucestershire's Lewis.
1st over: Hafeez leans into a widish one from Broad for the first boundary of the day. Broad comes back well before erring again with the final ball and Hafeez fills his boots. Nine from the first over.
1427: Players are out and Pakistan's openers are Hafeez and "Boom Boom" Afridi. Pakistan are clearly looking for a target of 450-500...
1420: "The wicket's not going to change much over the course of the day, so hopefully we can chase down whatever they set us" England skipper Andrew Strauss
