Old Trafford: 27-31 July, 2006

SECOND TEST, OLD TRAFFORD, DAY THREE:
England 461-9d bt Pakistan 119 & 222 by an innings and 120 runs

Monty Panesar and Steve Harmison were England's heroes as the hosts thrashed Pakistan by an innings and 120 runs in the second Test at Old Trafford.

Panesar took 5-72 and Harmison 5-57 to bowl Pakistan out for 222 on day three.

Left-arm spinner Panesar bowled particularly well either side of lunch to remove a stack of top batsmen including Younis Khan for 62.

Harmison then came back to wrap up the tail and allow England to head to Headingley with a 1-0 series lead.

1648:WICKET - PAKISTAN 222 ALL OUT: RAZZAQ C JONES B HARMISON 13
Harmison takes his 11th wicket of the match to wrap up the Pakistan innings. Razzaq gets a top edge and Jones is safely under the steepling catch. Figures of 11-76 for Harmison and Jones has another five dismissals.

1646: Panesar gets one to turn alarmingly away from Kaneria and Jones takes the ball over his right shoulder.

1641: Razzaq drags Harmison down to fine leg but turns down the run. Razzaq then plays a dismissive pull shot for four and a controlled sweep to mess up Harmison's figures a touch.

1640: Panesar has an lbw appeal rebuffed and Pakistan take just one from the over.

1634:WICKET - PAKISTAN 208-9: GUL C JONES B HARMISON 13
Harmison picks up his 10th wicket of the match, Gul nicking one down the leg-side. Number 11 Kaneria times an attempted yorker from Harmison though the sparsely-populated off-side for four. Harmison has now taken 10-67 in the match.

1630: Gul brings up Pakistan's 200 with an ugly hoik through mid-wicket for four. Umpire Taufel then turns down a vociferous lbw appeal from Panesar and Gul rubs salt into the wound with a fizzing slap over deep mid-wicket for six.

1627: Gul continues to back away from Harmison but manages a single to move on to three. Razzaq is also on three.

1624: Panesar, in a race with Harmison for 10 wickets in the match, fires down a maiden over.

1619:WICKET - PAKISTAN 194-8: SAMI C JONES B HARMISON 0
Sami blocks his first ball from Harmison, follows up with a blacksmith's hoick and gets a nick to wicket-keeper Jones. New batsman Gul ducks into a full-length delivery from Harmison and the Durham fast-bowler, his gander up, goes up for an lbw. Optimistic, but Gul won't be winning the Victoria Cross today.

1616:WICKET - PAKISTAN 194-7: AFRIDI C STRAUSS B HARMISON 17
Afridi, as is his want, goes after a wide one from Harmison and is snaffled by Strauss at second slip.

1613: Afridi slaps Panesar's first ball of the over over extra cover for four. Afridi is not going to hang about here.

1607: It's brightened up and Harmison, whirring his right arm like a propellor, is ready to come back on. Razzaq, who looked scared stiff against Harmison in the first innings, sends for a crash helmet. Harmison sends a wide down the leg-side and Pakistan get two runs.

1606: Panesar is still bounding in like an amorous rabbit and Pakistan take just one from his over.

1600: Pietersen goes berserk for an lbw against Afridi and Bucknor chuckles and turns him down. The ball hit Afridi outside the line of off-stump. Afridi then slaps Pietersen back over his head for a maximum and rocks back to a short one for another four through the covers.

1556:WICKET - PAKISTAN 174-6: IQBAL C TRESCOTHICK B PANESAR 29
Iqbal latches onto a shorter ball from Panesar and top-edges over the slips for four. Panesar then tempts him forward and Trescothick pouches a simple catch at slip.

1552: The umpires have a chat about the light but Strauss placates them by bringing Pietersen into his attack. Tidy stuff from the Hampshire dasher - just one from the over.

1547: The umpires lead the players back out. It's still pretty dank out in the middle and skipper Strauss may decide to bowl Pietersen in harness with Panesar. Monty is right on the money immediately after the break and Pakistan nudge two singles.

1536: The rain has ceased and the covers are off. It's actually brightened up quite a bit and play is due to start at 1550 BST.

1528: Truth be told, it looks pretty grim at Old Trafford. We could be in for a lengthy break.

1510: The umpires call for tea half-an-hour early in the hope there will not be too much of a hold-up. If there is no more rain, play should resume at 1530 BST.

1500: Bucknor issues Mahmood with an official warning for running on the pitch. Mahmood makes sure to duck off the pitch following his next delivery. The umpires have seen enough drizzle and take the players off.

Mahmood cruises into the wicket - although the word 'cruising' has taken on different connotations recently. Perhaps loping is a better word.
TMS commentator Jonathan Agnew

1455: Sorry for the confusion, but the rain has been blown off course once again. Panesar completes another probing over and Pakistan are still 176 runs behind and staring over the precipice.

Monty could drop his trousers down at the fine-leg boundary and still get a cheer. They love him.
TMS commentator Jonathan Agnew

1451: Mahmood replaces Hoggard. Monty gets a huge cheer as a fields at fine-leg. Umpire Bucknor has another word with Mahmood for running on the pitch. An official warning can't be far off. Heavier rain now, but the men in charge aren't budging.

1446:WICKET - PAKISTAN 161-5: YOUNIS LBW B PANESAR 62
Iqbal is surrounded like a playground victim. Panesar, coming over the wicket, has a silly mid-off, a short leg and two slips. He manages to get off the strike and Younis is out plumb leg before padding up to a straight one. Monty is on fire.

1442: More squally rain drifts into Old Trafford, but Hoggard is able to complete his over, another mediocre one. The players take drinks.

1437: The rain has ceased and Panesar gets one to leave the lunging Iqbal. Monty is then hopping around again after Iqbal almost has a nibble at another turning ball. The England spinner, with his wild staring eyes and swirling limbs, is in the zone.

1433: The umpires look unmoved as the rain drips down. It's by no means heavy and play doesn't look like being interrupted. Hoggard is still struggling to find any form and Younis smirks at a couple of bouncers that balloon over his head.

1431: Umbrellas are unfurled as Panesar ploughs through another neat set of six.

1426: Hoggard is back on and still striving for some rhythm. However, he snaps the shackles back on and serves up a maiden.

1422: Iqbal darts down the pitch and launches Panesar over long-on for six. He then sways back and cuts Panesar for four. Iqbal and Younis, needing a miracle to save the match, are opening up their shoulders and making a bid for freedom.

1418: Younis gets up on his toes and upper-cuts Harmison to the backward point boundary. The light is dimming and we are in for some rain. Younis flicks Harmison away and Pietersen takes the ball one bounce at short fine-leg. It appears to be a deliberate trap.

1416: Younis brings up his 50 with a nudge to mid-wicket. More tidy stuff from Panesar, who is doing his Ashes hopes no harm whatsoever.

This is the best display of predatory spin bowling from an Englishman I can recall.
TMS summariser Mike Selvey

1411: Rain galore to the west of Manchester and the clouds are gathering above Old Trafford. New batsmen Iqbal, nephew of Pakistan great Javed Miandad, gets a lifter from Harmison but plays it well. Iqbal then turns Harmison away for three through mid-wicket.

1409: Panesar is getting some extravagant turn and his penultimate ball is taken by Trescothick at first slip. His final ball spits off the pitch and squares Younis up. Lovely stuff from Monty.

Tell the boys to hurry up - it's pouring near Chester, about 50 miles west of Old Trafford.
Ros in the TMS inbox

1403: Younis, seeing the writing on the wall, attempts to pull Harmison and toe-ends it for four through extra cover. He follows up with a hook for another boundary. Younis is going to have a dart now, that much is clear.

1358:WICKET - PAKISTAN 117-4: INZAMAM C COOK B PANESAR 13
Out goes Inzy in freakish fashion, playing the ball onto his toe and the ball ballooning to Cook at silly mid-off. England will take that, choker for the tourists.

1356: A tidy, if unspectacular, over from Harmison. Blessed relief for Inzamam.

1351: Hoggard has a shy from mid-off but Inzamam, with just a hint of a sprint, is well in.

1346: Harmison's first ball to Inzamam is a rotter, lifting into the Pakistan skipper's throat. Inzamam gets his gloves up in front of his face, like a boxer staving off an attack on the ropes. Inzamam is then bamboozled by a full-length delivery and fends the ball just past Bell at short leg.

1340:WICKET - PAKISTAN 101-3: YOUSUF ST JONES B PANESAR 15
The players are back out after lunch and Yousuf is stumped off Panesar's first delivery. Nice work from wicket-keeper Jones, flicking off the bails with Yousuf's back foot on the line, not behind it. Skipper Inzamam is next man in and gets off the mark with a couple through the offside.

1258: Yousuf attempts to swat Mahmood through mid-off and Harmison, taking no chances, crumples to the floor and fields like a pensioner picking up his post from the door mat. Umpire Bucknor fancies a spot of lunch and flicks off the bails.

1254: Yousuf times Panesar through the covers for four. Yousuf then misses out on a short one, Mahmood fielding well in the gully.

1251: Another misfield by Hoggard off Mahmood's bowling and he must rather feel as though his team-mates are ganging up on him.

1249: Panesar has a confident appeal for lbw against Yousuf turned down by umpire Taufel. The ball hit the back leg but might have gone over the top.

1242: Strauss, seemingly as an afterthought, turns to Mahmood just before lunch. His first ball is right on the button and has Younis hopping into line. His second, slightly over-pitched, is on-driven for four. Mahmood's next delivery reaches 88.7mph - the quickest of the day - but Younis bends the knees and sways back nonchalantly. Harmison, fielding at mid-off, then stoops like an old tramp leafing through a bin and the ball runs away for three. Harmison sheepishly waves an apology.

1240: Yousuf is content to smother everything from Panesar in the sticky period before lunch. Another tidy, express over from Panesar.

1236: Still Hoggard from the Stretford End, and he beats Younis with one that ducks back off the seam. Expansive stuff from Younis, and England, with runs to play with, will like that.

1232: Panesar beats everything - Yousuf's inside edge, the stumps and Jones and runs away for four. Panesar is hopping around after every delivery now and clearly fancies running through the Pakistani order.

1229: Hoggard is still on and continues to look pretty inoccuous. Younis scoops a ball over his shoulder for four.

1226: Just two from Panesar's over. The Northants finger spinner is ploughing through his overs at a rate of knots.

1224: Hoggard sends down a maiden. However, it's a little strange that skipper Strauss hasn't turned to Sajid Mahmood. His height and bounce might prove useful right now.

1216:WICKET - PAKISTAN 60-2: FARHAT C BELL B PANESAR 34
Panesar is proving a real handful. His first ball of the over arcs into Farhat, spits and bounces over Jones' shoulder. Farhat then gets a sketchy boundary through the offside. The Pakistan opener then thrusts forward at one, gets a thick inside edge onto his pad and Bell pouches a dolly at short leg. Yousuf's first ball is a jaffer, pitching and beating his outside edge.

1210: Hoggard is back on. His second ball is a wide down leg side. He hasn't really found much rhythm in this match so far. Farhat reaches for a wide one and gets four down to the backward point boundary. Farhat sways back and steers Hoggard away for another four.

1208: Younis paddles Panesar away for a single. Attritional stuff from both sides thus far.

1203: Three slips, two gullys, a fly slip and a short leg for Harmison. Three singles from the over and Farhat moves on to 20.

1201: Drinks are taken and a bevy of water carriers and flask bearers take to the field.

1159: Panesar turns one across the face of Younis' bat. Plenty of spin for the Northants off-spinner. His final delivery spits off the surface and Jones takes the ball under his chin. Panesar is looking menacing and could well take a few.

1155: Harmison's working himself into a lather and Farhat ducks under a bouncer. Tough times for Pakistan.

1150: Monty Panesar is on. He finds the toe end of Farhat's bat and the ball bounces over his stumps. A tidy first over from the off-spinner. News reaches us that Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene has been dismissed for 374 by South Africa's Andre Nel - the fourth highest score in Test history.

1142: Harmison's back on and digs one into Farhat's bread basket. The Pakistan opener takes a breather and the 12th man enters the fray and gives him a spray from his magic can. Farhat gets solidly behind the next ball and scampers a single. Younis dabs Harmison's final delivery down and the ball dribbles just past his stumps.

1138: Harmison leaves the field, presumably for treatment on his twinged side. Younis has a dabble at a wide one and gets four for it. He's clearly going to have a dart, despite his side's dire situation.

1137: Younis Khan takes a single. Farhat sways back wildly to a Harmison short one, much like Keanu Reeves in The Matrix.

1132: Just one from Hoggard's over. The Yorkshire man is yet to take a wicket in the match.

1128: A pretty non-descript over from Harmison. That's the beauty of the Durham man though, his ability to serve up an absolutely horrible delivery amidst the inoccuous.

1124: Hoggard bounces Younis and the Pakistan number three has a nibble - but fails to make contact.

1115:WICKET - PAKISTAN 21-1: AKMAL C JONES B HARMISON 4
Harmison serves up a brute and Akmal can only fence it to Jones behind the stumps. Pakistan slip further into the mire. Younis Khan is next man in and safely negotiates the remainder of the over.

1109: Much chat about Geraint Jones' finger injury. Will he be fit for the third Test at Headingley? Is this Chris Read's big chance? Akmal nudges Hoggard down to fine leg for a single. Hoggard digs one in and Farhat ducks below it with little trouble - another no-ball.

1105: Harmison's first ball is tucked away for a single by Farhat. The Durham man looks pretty fit, despite last night's injury scare. Farhat then has an airy-fairy waft at one that leaves him. Very iffy.

1100: Hoggard's first ball of the day is short and wide outside leg stump. Farhat nudges a single into the offside. Other than the first delivery, it is a good accurate over by Hoggard, who makes the Pakistani batsmen play at four balls.

1058: A bit of Jerusalem as the players walk out. Wicket-keeper Geraint Jones has fractured the tip of his ring finger - he'll be hoping Steve Harmison is in relaxed mood this morning.

1035: England physio Kirk Russell confrims Harmison will be able to bowl and Jones will have a local anaesthetic to numb the pain.

1000: Harmison is warming up and looks to be moving freely after his injury scare on Friday.
