Yorkshire go back to basics
Test Match Special's Simon Mann

Yorkshire hope a new coaching structure, a new captain and a more disciplined approach will enable a swift return to the First Division after the shock of relegation last season.

If the squad lives up to its potential, it should be accomplished with a degree of comfort.

Part of Anthony McGrath's manifesto as captain is to restore some traditional discipline

The Australian regime has been toppled at Headingley and the locals are back in charge.

If Yorkshire had got their way, then Martyn Moxon would have returned to replace Wayne Clark as coach but Durham responded to their interest by improving and extending Moxon's contract.

Instead, Arnie Sidebottom and Steve Oldham will coach the bowlers and Kevin Sharp will coach the batsman.

Anthony McGrath takes over from Darren Lehmann as captain and Lehmann will not be returning this summer.

Australia's international schedule would have restricted Lehmann's availability so the county, limited by serious financial problems, have chosen not to fill their second overseas position for the time being.

They will miss his runs, however. He scored 1,136 in 10 matches last season and 1,416 in 13 games in 2001.

The pressure is on Matthew Elliott to fill the gap, and he showed his class last summer when Lehmann was away, averaging 54.11 in five championship games and scoring a century in the C&G Trophy final at Lord's.

He should flourish, especially against Second Division bowlers and has the added advantage of being available for the whole season.

Part of McGrath's manifesto as captain is to restore some traditional discipline, including the need for smartness off the field after complaints last year by some county members.

It smacks of Ted Dexter's infamous decision 'to have a look at the issue of facial hair' when he was England's chairman of selectors but perhaps it is what Yorkshire need after playing standards slipped last year.

As long as McGrath can take his players with him then it could have a positive effect.

Darren Gough's return to something approaching full fitness would be a significant bonus for Yorkshire.

A series of knee operations and an intensive fitness programme have won him a new contract, but it is anybody's guess what will happen when he tries to play again.

Injuries to pace bowlers will be McGrath's main concern.

Ryan Sidebottom is reliable and was the leading wicket-taker last season with 41 but Chris Silverwood, Craig White and Steve Kirby have suffered of late.

White's latest setback has forced the county to rethink plans not to employ a second overseas player.

Matthew Hoggard's disappointing winter means Yorkshire could see more of him than they would have expected.

An opening attack of Hoggard and Gough for even half the season would make Yorkshire hard to stop.

What is certain is Michael Vaughan will barely play a handful of games.

But if the batsmen struggle, the bowlers should be able to make up the difference.

If matters become too desperate there is always the option of signing a second overseas player on a short-term contract.
