C&G Trophy final, Lord's: Sussex 172 (47.1 overs) v Lancashire 156 (47.2 overs)Former England seamer James Kirtley took five wickets as Sussex beat Lancashire by 15 runs at Lord's to win their first C&G Trophy for 20 years.
Sussex's 172 had looked well under par after some poor shot selection and two run outs. Sajid Mahmood took 3-16.
But Kirtley took three in seven balls and Mushtaq Ahmed struck twice to end a confident start by Lancashire.
Kyle Hogg and Dominic Cork added 58 for the seventh wicket Kirtley tied up victory with 16 balls to spare.
LATEST UPDATES (All times BST)
LANCASHIRE INNINGS
48th over:WICKET - Sussex 156 (Kartik b Kirtley 0)
Cork scampers a single and it's number 11 Kartik on strike. He lasts just one ball, trapped in front by the inspirational Kirtley who finishes with 5-27. A thrilling conclusion to a funny old game of cricket.
47th over:WICKET - Lancashire 156-9 (Mahmood b Arafat 2)Hold on to your hats folks, this one's going down to the wire. Mahmood is next man in, and he can bat a bit. Arafat is on, and Mahmood gets off the mark with a nice shot to cover. No Hollywood stuff from Cork, who is happy to nudge and nurdle his way to the target. Mahmood, however, loses the plot and is bowled by Arafat playing an awful shot across the line. He'll be a popular man in the Lancashire dressing room...
46th over:WICKET - Lancashire 151-8 (Smith lbw b Kirtley 10)
Lancashire are closing in on their target and Sussex skipper Adams turns to Kirtley, the wrecker of Lancashire's top order. Smith plays a fine lofted on-drive down the ground for four. One of the hardest shots in the book, he made it look easy. Kirtley goes up for an optimistic lbw against Smith, but it pitched outside leg-stump. Kirtley is getting the inswinger going, but Cork gets bat on it and scampers a single. However, Kirtley gets his revenge on Smith, trapping him plumb in front. The pendulum swings back Sussex's way.
45th over: There's a huge conflab between the Sussex players while Wright is having treatment on what looks like cramp. In fact, Wright has gone off and 12th man Heather is on. Smith nudges a single to mid-wicket and Cork collects one himself. 145-7
44th over: More tight stuff from Wright, but he looks to have a bit of cramp at the end of the over. 141-7
43rd over: Smith is the next man in and Yardy bowls a tight over - he's doing a decent job with his medium pacers. 136-7
42nd over:WICKET - Lancashire 130-7 (Hogg c Montgomerie b Wright 28)
Montgomerie spills Hogg at wide mid-on - it was going at a decent rate, but he should have pouched it. Has Montgomerie dropped the C&G Trophy? Maybe so. Hogg, reprieved, then mows Wright down to long-off, but his luck runs out hen he tries to pull Wright again and the ball plops into Montgomerie's hands.
39th over: Yardy has switched ends and is bowling over 60mph, which makes him pretty much a medium pacer. Lancashire have a decent lbw appeal turned down by umpire Lloyds - Hogg is lucky to survive. 116-6
38th over: Wright is back into the attack and he almost tempts Hogg with a lifter outside off-stump. Hogg, rooted to the spot like a tree, flails and misses. A tight over from Wright. 112-6
37th over: Mushy's final over and it's a surprise Sussex haven't surrounded the bat with catchers. Hogg manages to block it out and Mushy finishes with figures of 2-19 from his 10 overs. Class. 111-6
36th over: Yardy has a peculiar, round-arm action and bowls at almost medium pace. Four from his first over. 110-6
"Yardy bowls little poor man's Derek Underwoods - but he's done enough to get called up by England..."
TMS commentator Christopher Martin-Jenkins
35th over: Cork looks like he wants to get Mushtaq out of the way before launching Lancashire's final push. He safely negotiates another Mushtaq over and the leg-spinner only has one left. 106-6
34th over: Lancashire bring up their 100. Arafat tries bowling around the wicket to Hogg and is dragged away to mid-wicket for a couple. Five from Arafat's over, including a couple of wides. 104-6
33rd over: Cork has got the right idea, nudging and nurdling and hitting the rare bad ball. He scampers a single before Hogg tries to run Mushtaq away and almost tickles one behind. 99-6
32nd over: Arafat is back on and beats Cork with his first delivery. Cork tucks Arafat away for a single but Hogg misses out on a wide one from Arafat. 97-6
31st over: Mushy's still on and still pestering Hogg. Hogg edges one that runs wide of slip and Cork gets a single to cover. 95-6
30th over: Cork swings Martin-Jenkins to the mid-wicket boundary before making room and hammering him through the covers. Ten from the over and the pendulum is swinging back Lancashire's way. 93-6
29th over: Cork scampers a single and has a bit of banter with Mushtaq, who was suggesting Cork might have been a little lucky to make contact with the ball. The abrasive Cork won't like that. Hogg is still scratching around and gets a leading edge. 83-6
28th over: Cork gets off the mark with a single and Hogg nearly feathers Martin-Jenkins behind. 80-6
27th over: Sharp work by Sutton behind the timbers, but the third umpire decides the lunging Hogg is not out. Borderline, as his toe didn't seem to be over the line. Hogg is being given a going over by Mushtaq, who slides a googly past the face of his bat. 79-6
26th over: Hogg flogs Martin-Jenkins to the boundary, the ball flying just past the fielder at mid-wicket. Hogg then steers the ball to extra-cover for three. The watchable Cork is next man in. 79-6
25th over:WICKET - Sussex 72-6 (Chapple c Mongomerie b Mushtaq 17)
Chapple drags a poor ball from Mushtaq to the boundary and looks as though he might have feathered one later in the over. Chapple is out, however, off the last ball, lunging forward and tickling the ball to Montgomerie at forward short-leg. Sharp catch by Montgomerie.
24th over: Chapple moves on to 13 with an unconvincing glide down to third man. Hogg makes a hash of his first delivery, swiping at a straight one, but the ball was too high for lbw. Martin-Jenkins then serves up a pearler which pitches and leaves Hogg. 68-5
23rd over:WICKET - Sussex 67-5 (Chilton st Prior b Mushtaq 20)
Mushtaq has his first lbw appeal turned down by umpire Lloyds but Chilton is out next ball, going after a wide ball down leg-side and getting himself stumped by Prior. Choker for the Lancashire captain and this game is bubbling up nicely.
22nd over: Chilton drags Martin-Jenkins away for a single and cuts him away for another. 65-4
21st over: Mushtaq is a little box of tricks and effervescence, whirling his way to the crease and always asking questions. A maiden, and Chapple is happy to leave Mushtaq well alone. 62-4
20th over: Martin-Jenkins twice just misses Chapple's off-stump with a ball that darts back and Chapple then attempts to hoik a short ball over mid-wicket, and nearly feathers it to wicket-keeper Prior. 62-4
19th over: Mushtaq is on, and he's a ruddy good bowler. Oohs and aahs as he gets one to go straight on and pained noises from behind the stumps as his googly darts back. Chapple nudges a single, but it's evident he doesn't really know what's going on. 60-4
18th over: Martin-Jenkins gets one to shoot through low and it chops Chilton in half. A maiden from Christopher's son Robin. 59-4
17th over:WICKET - Sussex 51-4 (Sutton c Arafat b Wright 13)
Just as Chilton and Sutton seemed to have steadied the Lancashire ship, Sutton goes and throws his wicket away, mis-timing a pull straight to Arafat at short mid-wicket. Chapple gets off the mark with a luscious drive through the covers for four and carves away the next ball for another boundary.
16th over: Captain Chilton brings up Lancashire's fifty with a tuck to mid-wicket. 51-3
15th over: Sutton gets a single from a Wright free-ball and Chilton runs a single down to third man. Wicket-keeper Sutton times one through extra-cover and Kirtley's dramatic dive is in vain. Sutton tries the same next ball and this time Kirtley cuts it off. 49-3
"I'm terrified having to describe a Martin-Jenkins long-hop slogged to the boundary for four with his dad standing three foot away from me..."
TMS commentator Jonathan Agnew
14th over: Chilton drives Martin-Jenkins to point for a couple but misses out on a juicy, short delivery. 39-3
13th over: Sutton laces one through the covers for four to release some of the pressure. Kirtley hits back with a big lbw appeal, but the ball was going down the leg-side. That could be Kirtley for now - a magnificent spell of seam bowling, including 3-0 off 7 balls.37-3
12th over: Big lbw appeal behind the stumps, but umpire Mallender is having none of it. The ball looked to be arcing down leg side. Sussex are really turning the screw now. Another maiden over - that's three in a row. 33-3
11th over: Kirtley has Sutton groping blindly again and it's another fine maiden over from the former England seamer. 33-3
10th over: The Big Man upstairs has given us some sun. That could be good news for Lancashire. Hopkinson mis-fields at backward point, gifting Sutton a run. Another two leg-byes from Arafat's over. 33-3
9th over: Kirtley has Chilton fencing again - he's getting some serious movement both ways. Chilton is playing a dangerous game, playing the ball late. He edges the final ball down to third man for one. Fretful stuff from Lancashire. 29-3
8th over: Arafat keeps up the pressure with a maiden. Chilton, as the old cliches goes, could do with a skipper's innings. 28-3
7th over:WICKET - 27-3 Lancashire (Law lbw b Kirtley 0)
Aussie Law, all set for a starring role, gets a stinker from umpire Lloyds. Lots of wood on another Kirtley inswinger. Kirtley's hat-trick ball is wide outside the off-stump and the next has Sutton groping. Sutton gets off the mark with a thick outside edge down to third man.
WICKET - Lancashire 27-2 (Astle lbw b Kirtley 3) Kirtley traps Kiwi Astle plumb in front with an inswinger. Lancashire's fans will be fretting now.
6th over: Chilton threads a drive through the covers for a boundary. He's an elegant batsman, easy on the eye. 27-1
5th over:WICKET - Lancashire 23-1 (Loye lbw b Kirtley 12)
Loye plants his foot down the pitch and sends Kirtley into the crowd over mid-wicket. His trademark shot. He then goes fishing for a wide one and misses and is lbw next ball, missing one that jags back off the seam. Kirtley then thinks he's got Astle caught behind, but umpire Lloyds didn't detect a nick. 23-1
4th over: Arafat gets one to dart back and he fancies it's lbw - but umpire Mallender adjudges, correctly, that there was an inside edge. 16-0
3rd over: Hopkinson pulls off a fine stop at backward point to restrict Loye to a single. Kirtley gets one past Chilton's outside edge but Chilton, who looks in good nick, pushes three runs down to long-on. Loye has a go at a wide one and edges the ball through vacant fourth slip for a single. 16-0
2nd over: Arafat gets one to banana away from Chilton but Chilton square-drives the next ball for four. Chilton, or Jimmy Chil as he is known to his team-mates, clips the penultimate ball to mid-wicket for a couple. 10-0
1st over: Loye and Chilton are out in the middle 10 minutes earlier than expected. I'm still tucking into a very mediocre lasagne. Kirtley has first go with the ball and Loye gets three from the first over. Chilton gets one to nibble back at Chliton, but it's a bit high for an lbw. 4-0
SUSSEX INNINGS
48th over:WICKET - Sussex 172 all out (Mushtaq b Mahmood 8)
Mahmood mops up the Sussex innings, yorking Mushy with a superb slower ball. Mahmood finishes with 3-16, Sussex have their work cut out - but at least they've made it interesting.
47th over: Kartik gets one to spin across a groping Kirtley. Mushtaq will like the look of that. Mushtaq gets a single through an ugly smear. Sussex are hanging in there. 172-9
46th over: Kirtley is last man in. Mushtaq is still playing some cultured shots and gets one with an upper-cut down to third man. Kirtley nurdles a single to mid-wicket. 168-9
45th over:WICKET - Sussex 164-9 (Wright st Sutton b Kartik 19)
Mushtaq can bat a bit, and gets a few down to mid-off. Wright, however, is dismissed, dancing down the wicket and stumped by Sutton. Neat work by the former Derbyshire keeper.
44th over: Former England Under-19 all-rounder Wright pulls Hogg away for four. Law, fielding at backward point, nearly runs Mushtaq out, but misses with one stump to aim at. Wright then plays a dreamy shot through mid-on for four. 161-8
43rd over:WICKET - Sussex 145-8 (Yardy lbw b Kartik 37)
Yardy's somewhat torturous innings, from 96 balls, is ended by a Kartik straight one. Mushtaq gets off the mark with an elegant push to mid-off 147-8
42nd over: Hogg is on for Smith and beats Yardy with a jaffer. Yardy needs to put pedal to metal, despite their precarious situation. 145-7
41st over: Kartik replaces England's Mahmood and gives up just three runs. 142-7
40th over: Three from Smith's over, Wright off the mark straightaway. 139-7
39th over:WICKET - Sussex 134-7 (Arafat c Sutton b Mahmood 37)
Mahmood does for Arafat with a slower ball, the Pakistani batsman feathering a catch to Sutton behind the timbers. The end of an impressive, invaluable knock from Arafat, who put on 56 with Yardy. 136-7
38th over: Arafat lofts Smith to mid-off for two and follows up with an unorthodox slog-sweep-type-thing for four. He who dares stuff from Arafat, who sends the final ball of the over straight down the ground for four. This partnership is giving Sussex hope - it's now worth 50. 134-6
37th over: Mahmood sends down a full toss and Arafat loses sight of it, going to duck a ball outside off-stump. Arafat plays an airy shot outside off-stump before scampering a single. 119-6
36th over: Yardy isn't having much luck and finds Chilton again with a glorious-looking cover-drive. He does manage a quick single to cover and at least Sussex are going to set a target. 118-6
35th over: Cork gets one to dart back and the ball hits Yardy's thigh-pad. Only a strangled appeal from the bowler. 116-6
34th over: Yardy plays a rare authentic stroke, an attractive cover-drive for a couple. Chilton then denies Yardy with a sharp stop in the covers. 113-6
33rd over: Cork is back on. There is a feeling that perhaps Lancashire should have pinned Sussex to the floor and delivered the coup de grace instead of offering up a few overs of gentle Kartik spin. Four from the over and Yardy and Arafat are building something from the wreckage. 111-6
32nd over: Smith beats Yardy again with one that slants away from the bat. Yardy looks hopelessly out of sorts, but he's somehow scratched out 20. 107-6
31st over: Arafat dances down the pitch again and is almost yorked by Kartik. Arafat is irresprissible, though, and chips the next ball to deep mid-wicket for four to bring up Sussex's 100. Gutsy stuff from the young Pakistani all-rounder. 103-6
30th over: Seamer Smith is on. Arafat drags him round the corner for 1. Yardy attempts a drive and is beaten by one that seams away. 97-6
29th over: Arafat skips down the track and slaps Kartik down the pitch for four. Kartik then slips in a no-ball, but Arafat can only mangle a leg-bye from the free hit. It's raining at Twickenham, just down the road from Lord's. 93-6
28th over: Arafat plays a florid back-foot drive but Smith pulls off a good stop on the boundary. The Pakistani one-day player then replicates the shot, and this time gets four for it. He fancies this, and Sussex fans will be grateful for it. 84-6
27th over: Sutton whips off the stumps with Yardy stretching forward, but the Sussex batsman just has his toe behind the line. It's all a bit subdued at Lord's. 78-6
26th over:WICKET 78-6 Sussex (Martin-Jenkins c Sutton b Chapple 15)
Martin-Jenkins gets up on tip-toes and drives imperiously for four. He gets a stinker next up, however, umpire Mallender deciding he tickled one behind. Replays show the ball hit the pad, not the bat. 78-6
25th over: Left-arm spinner Kartik is rolled into the attack. The Indian is making his seasonal debut, having bumped Gary Keedy from the line-up. How's your luck. Two from the six. 73-5
24th over: Elegant boundary to mid-wicket from Martin-Jenkins. Good diving save from Hogg at mid-on restricts Martin-Jenkins to a single before Chapple gets Yardy in a pickle with an off-cutter. 71-5
23rd over: Yardy plays an uppish stroke and Chapple makes a bit of a hash of things in the covers. One run. 68-5
22nd over: Three from the over, Martin-Jenkins getting another thick outside edge to backward point. 64-5
21st over: Yardy, shuffling across his stumps like a crab, nearly plays on. Yardy then comes out of his shell and attempts a straight drive, but Mahmood stoops and denies him. 61-5
20th over: Martin-Jenkins gets a thick outside edge for one. This is agonising for Sussex fans. 58-5
19th over: Yardy almost plays on and Martin-Jenkins is nearly run out. The two Sussex batsmen are scratching about like a couple of miscreants outside the headmaster's office - very nervy. 54-5
18th over: Martin-Jenkins gets off the mark with a single and he then gets an outside edge - but the ball falls just short of Law at slip. 54-5
17th over:WICKET - Sussex 52-5 (Hopkinson run out 1)
Whoops-a-daisy, Martin Hayesy, as Arsenal fans used to sing. Hopkinson goes for a single, doesn't shift fast enough, and is run-out by the bristling Cork at mid-off. I could have my feet in a bowl of salty water by 4PM.52-5
16th over:WICKET - Sussex 46-4 (Goodwin c Sutton b Chapple 7)
Poor shot from Goodwin, trying to cut Chapple away, and Sutton takes a sharp catch behind the timbers. Yardy then gets a let-off. He attempts a drive and the ball flies between Law and Astle at first and second slip. Difficult to say who should have gone for it, but someone should have. Law looks like a man who was planning a round of golf only to run into his mother-in-law on the front drive. 52-4
15th over: Smith denies Yardy his first run with a fine diving stop at point. Yardy looks a touch twitchy, and almost plays on trying to pull his bat out of the way. 46-3
14th over: Chapple is the new bowler, and he tees one up for Prior, but the Sussex man misses with a mighty swish. Umpire Mallender rejects a confident lbw appeal - a lot of wood on it. 43-3
13th over:WICKET - Sussex 38-3 (Adams c Astle b Mahmood 6)
Mahmood, new into the attack, scalps the Sussex skipper with a lifter. Kiwi Astle pouches the catch at second slip. The Sharks are in a spot of bother. New England call-up Yardy gets a couple of tempters from Mahmood, but doesn't have a nibble. 38-3
12th over: Just one from the over, Goodwin tucking Hogg away down to square leg. 37-2
11th over: Goodwin nudges to mid-on and sends Adams back. Cork swoops and has a shy at the stumps, but just misses. Adams then pushes the ball to mid-off and attempts a suicidal run. Goodwin's having none of it, but Cork misses with his throw. Both batsman need to cool their jets, as the kids might say.36-2
10th over: Adams steps across his stumps and Hogg goes up for an lbw. Umps his having none of it. Dreamy off-drive from Adams - four for it. 33-2
9th over: A strangled lbw appeal by Cork against new batsman Goodwin. Goodwin scored a one-day ton for Zimbabwe against England in 2000. Cork doesn't give a monkey's, and makes him look like Mr Magoo with one that leaves him off the pitch. 29-2
8th over:WICKET - Sussex 27-2 (Prior c Mahmood b Hogg 23)
Hogg slices Prior in half with one that darts back. Prior then charges down the track and slaps Hogg to the long-on boundary for four. Prior then attempts to drag Hogg over the mid-wicket boundary, gets a top edge and is caught by Mahmood. Who says Lancashire are taking it easy? 28-2
7th over: Glorious shot from Prior, easing forward and driving Cork through the covers for four. There is a withered air about Lancashire at the moment. 23-1
6th over: Tidy over from Hogg - a maiden. Adams is happy to keep his fireworks in his pocket for the moment. 18-1
"Chris Adams relaxed at the toss? He must have had one of those pills..."
TMS summariser Ian Gould
5th over: Prior glides Cork down to third man for a couple then decides he's had enough of mincing about and plays a full-blooded square drive for the first boundary of the day. Ten from the over. 18-1
4th over: Prior moves to four with a nudge down to short mid-wicket. He's reining himself in. New batsman and Sussex skipper Adams looks psyched. Look out Lancashire. 8-1
3rd over:WICKET - Sussex 6-1 (Montgomerie run out 1)It's Keystone Cops from Sussex as Prior sends Montgomerie back and Smith pulls off a fine bit of fielding at backward point. He throws to Cork, who throws down the stumps. Montgomerie, the nuggety County pro, is a goner. 6-1
"I've never seen Matt Prior block a ball..."
TMS summariser Ian Gould
2nd over: Hogg's first ball is angled down the leg side and Prior nudges it down to fine leg for a couple. Prior, who likes to give it some tap, has a Hollywood shot at a ball just outside off-stump - but no outside edge. 3-01st over: Cork opens the bowling from the Nursery End and Montgomerie will take first guard. Prior is down the other end. Cork is getting a bit of away swing, and gets a touch too much to give Sussex their first run with a wide. A mediocre over from Corky, who relishes the big occasion. 3-0
"We think there might be a bit in it with the weather conditions. We have batted most times this season but we think we might be able to exploit the conditions early. It's a big day, we're raring to go and form goes out of the window on days like today."
Lancashire captain Mark Chilton
"We would have liked to have bowled first but in finals you've got to bat well whether first or second. This will be a tight game. It's going to be difficult early on but the guys are in great shape."
Sussex skipper Chris Adams
1035: Chris Adams tosses the coin but it comes up in favour of Mark Chilton and the Lancashire skipper opts to bowl first in pretty overcast conditions.
1025: Lord's has just had a heavy shower which had the groundstaff scuttling to pull all the covers on. It has now stopped and all of the covers have been removed but the start will be delayed until 1100.
