Vettori could not stifle England as he did in the first innings |
New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori was understandably dejected after his team's six-wicket defeat by England. "Defeat in games you should win hurts a lot more than games you shouldn't," the spinner said. "To be bowled out for 114 was probably the turning point." "We were playing really well but Monty [Panesar] made it difficult with some prodigious turn, though we didn't help ourselves with some shot selection. "We have a chance to draw this series, but this will hurt us for a long time." Vettori admitted that the wicket did not favour the bowlers as much as he hoped it would on the fourth day, after England chose to have the heavy roller put on before play began. "It probably didn't start to go again until late in the second session and that was probably because of the heavy roller, so England knew the conditions pretty well and it deadened the wicket," he reflected. "You do have to sit back and say that England took their opportunities. "Panesar bowled exceptionally well and they batted exceptionally well after that." | 606: DEBATE |
New Zealand had a first innings advantage of 179, and were over 200 runs ahead with nine wickets intact, before their dramatic collapse led to a famous England victory. "There was no pressure to score runs quickly but we just didn't put runs on the board. It didn't matter how long it took it was an opportunity to score well and not put pressure on anyone," Vettori lamented. "We did that for a period of time and we're in a really good position but probably got a bit hurried." Looking at the general picture he said: "There are always good things to come out of Test matches, win or lose, guys who stand up and perform. "You look at the way Ross Taylor played, I thought he was exceptional, Kyle Mills with his batting, Iain O'Brien, the way he bowled in extremely difficult conditions, all those things make you feel a little bit better but it's still a loss so it's going to be a terrible feeling in our dressing room. "It's very disappointing, coming to the ground thinking you can win the game, particularly for me, I should be an integral part of doing that and not being able to take the wickets is bitterly disappointing."
