Twenty20 has become a huge success story in the last five years, with thousands flocking to watch English counties compete.

But the idea of short-form cricket was pioneered well before that in the late 1990s by former New Zealand captain Martin Crowe.

Like now, both teams faced 20 overs in Cricket Max, but in two innings of 10, and another key difference was two "Max" zones at each end of the field, where runs counted as double.

However, the concept was not taken outside of New Zealand, who played England in the only three Max internationals in 1997, and the competition is now defunct.
