New Zealand ended a run of five consecutive one-day wins by Pakistan by thrashing Rashid Latif's side by seven wickets in Dambulla on Sunday.
Pakistan were bowled out for just 116 in 43.1 overs in this second match of the Sri Lanka tri-series tournament.
Having beaten the hosts by 79 runs on Saturday, they showed the classic symptoms of Pakistani inconsistency just 24 hours later.
Four out of their top six batsmen were dismissed without scoring and they slumped to 17-5 before staging a modest recovery.
A 25-run stand between Taufeeq Umar and Shoaib Malik, and another worth 45 between Rashid Latif and Shoaib Akhtar, carried the innings to its premature close in the 44th over.
Akhtar top-scored with 27 from 38 balls, an innings that included two towering sixes.
But most credit went to new-ball bowlers Daryl Tuffey and Shane Bond, who capitalised on overcast conditions and a lively pitch to share four wickets after skipper Stephen Fleming had opted to field.
However Yousuf Youhana and Younis Khan, Pakistan's most experienced batting pair, were both unfortunate to be dismissed.
Youhana was bowled via his pad by Bond for a duck, while Younis looked to be the victim of a poor lbw decision when he padded up to Tuffey on three.
New Zealand's run chase was a formality once Chris Nevin had smashed 28 off just 29 balls at the top of the order.
The victory duly came in the 28th over just after the heavens had opened, Chris Cairns pulling Umer Gul for four.
