The pre-race favourite shattered the old course record, crossing the line on The Mall in a time of one hour 32 minutes two seconds.

Jeannot made his move just before the halfway mark, attacking on the incline over Tower Bridge before racing into a lead he comfortably held on to.

But the race for podium places went down to the wire.

More than two minutes after Jeannot finished, Britain's David Weir, last year's winner, edged out another Frenchman, Denis Lemeunier in a sprint finish.

"I'm pleased because I wanted to do a faster time than last year and I did that," Weir said. "I can't complain."

A Briton also finished second in the women's race, Tanni Grey-Thompson finishing behind her great friend and rival, Italy's Francesca Porcellato.

"It was so much quicker than last year, but I died on the cobbles, which seem to get longer and longer every year," Grey-Thompson said.

"Francesca's very strong in the second part of the race and there wasn't time to get back to her."

Porcellato's victory came on her debut in the event and denied Grey-Thompson her seventh title.

Britain's Paula Craig finished third.
