Americans dominate sprint
American John Capel
Capel has returned from a year out playing American football
John Capel headed up an American clean sweep in the 100m at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Rome.

The 25-year-old, who won the 200m in Paris last week, clocked 10.04 seconds, edging out US champion Bernard Williams while Olympic title-holder Maurice Greene took a close third.

Britain's Dwain Chambers will be disappointed that he has yet to hit his peak this season after settling for fourth place in 10.09secs.

There was better news for team-mate Jason Gardener who set a season's best of 10.19secs in eighth spot.

Williams later proved he had plenty left in the tank to set a world leading mark of 20.01secs in the 200m.

Chandra Sturrup and Maria Mutola remained on course for a share of the $1m in gold, divided among athletes who win their event at all six Golden Leagues.

The Bahamian sprinter continued her remarkable season, stylishly winning the 100m with a world best time of 10.89secs.

Double American sprint champion Kelli White was second, Torri Edwards followed in third while 43-year-old Merlene Ottey finished back in eighth.

Mutola reeled in Jolanda Ceplak in the home straight to win her third successive 800m in a time of 1min 57.21secs.

Slovenia's Ceplak had pushed out in front just after the bell but the world, Olympic and Commonwealth champion bided her time before surging past Ceplak and third-placed Morocco's Mina Ait Hammou.

Abraham Chebii upstaged 5000m world record holder Haile Gebrselassie for the second time in the space of a week.

With the Ethiopian, his protege Kenenisa Bekele and Chebii in the field the Italian crowd were always going to be treated to a masterclass in long-distance stamina and tactics.

At the half-way mark the trio were nestled together at the head of the field and it was Gebrselassie who hit the front with two laps to go.

Bekele was the first to pass the 30-year-old at the bend before Kenya's Chebii proved he had the legs to finish fastest, taking the top spot from both the Ethiopians in a time of 12mins 57.14secs.

In the women's event Olympic 5000m champion Gabriela Szabo left it too late to catch Ethiopia's Meseret Defar who set a new personal best of 14 mins 40.36secs.

Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj looked incredibly easy as he raced to a clear victory in the 1500m, after kicking for home over the last 300m.

The world record holder and three-time world champion set a world best time of 3mins 29.77secs on his first competitive race over the distance this season.

Tyree Washington put in another good performance in the 400m to give further credence to his favourite's tag for the World Championships.

The world indoor champion coasted home in 44.42secs ahead of defending world champion Avard Moncur.

Britain's Kelly Holmes showed encouraging form in her first appearance of the season in the women's 1500m.

The 33-year-old, who is on the comeback trail from a calf injury, finished fourth with a time of 4mins 01.96secs.

British team-mate Jo Pavey also benefited from a very fast race, smashing her personal best by five seconds as she claimed fifth spot in 4mins 02.03secs.

Russia's Olga Yegorova survived being nudged off the track at the final bend to win the event in 4minutes 01.00secs - the fastest time in the world this year.

Natasha Danvers set her third personal best inside a week as she collected third place in the 400m hurdles.

The California-based Briton praised technical improvements in her training for helping her shave 0.30secs off her time, now set at 54.02secs.

In the men's event Chris Rawlinson was awarded third place in a photo finish with training partner Llewellyn Herbert given second, both clocked 48.50secs.

Felix Sanchex notched up his 21st straight win, cruising to first spot in 48.15secs.
