Volunteering

Children in the back of a car
Got any space in the back of your car?

Volunteering is about getting involved, so start by supporting your kids from the sidelines.

You can also help out with lifts or transport, offering to set up equipment before a training session or clearing up afterwards.

Let the organisers know you'd like to volunteer your services. Clubs are always looking for new volunteers, so they'll find a way of making you useful.

All organisations that work with children are required to have child protection policies in place.

Depending on the type of voluntary role you get involved with, you may be required to provide two references and fill in some forms.

Major sports events offer a chance for a different experience of volunteering - more than 10,000 people helped out at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.

And the London 2012 Olympic Games will be offering more opportunities to get involved in volunteering in 2006.

There are plenty of other sporting events across the country. Contact your local authority to find out about events in your area.

There are plenty of initiatives and programmes that offer different routes into volunteering.

For details of these, see our opportunities page.
