Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys made it through to round two with victories earlier today.

Sinner was leading Hugo Gaston by two sets to love when the clearly distraught Frenchman retired from their first-round contest.

Keys was a straight-set winner against Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova.

British duo Sonay Kartal and Katie Boulter were knocked out, both losing their respective matches in straight sets.

And 39-year-old Gael Monfils said farewell to the Australian Open - his 20th appearance in Melbourne came to an early end with a four-set defeat by Australian Dane Sweeny.

After a perfect day one, day two and day three haven't been as kind to the British players out in Melbourne.

British number two Sonay Kartal was beaten 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 by 31st seed Anna Kalinskaya on court 13.

The 24-year-old initially had the upper hand over her opponent but a poor tie-break was the catalyst for her loss.

Katie Boulter was also outclassed in a straight-set 6-0 7-5 defeat by Belinda Bencic on Margaret Court Arena.

The British number four was given last-minute entry into the main draw following a withdrawal, but was handed a tough opening match against the women's singles 10th seed.

This is the moment from 2021 that Naomi Osaka was referring to in her post-match interview.

She paused play during one of her matches after a butterfly landed on her face. She gently removed it and placed it on the side of the court before resuming... and went on to win the tournament.

    Osaka 6-3 3-6 6-4 Ruzic

Former two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka, speaking on court after her three-set win over Antonia Ruzic:

"This is one of my favourite tournaments and just to start the year off, it makes me very happy. I'm so grateful you [the crowd] stuck it out because we were the second night match and I hope you enjoyed the match.

"I think I served pretty well. She is an amazing player, I've never played her before and if we meet again I am pretty sure we will keep playing some really great matches."

On the outfit she wore during her entrance to Rod Laver Arena: "Nike let me design this one. It's modelled after a jellyfish. I'm so grateful I get to be able to do the things that I love and it's really beautiful.

"There's a butterfly on the hat and the umbrella, which has to do with the Australian Open I won in 2021."

At 4-4 it still wasn't obvious who was going to win this match and all of a sudden Naomi Osaka had the best game she has had all match.

That was a signal and a shift - it was still not easy to close out that last game but she took her opportunities and that is the mark of a champion.

Naomi Osaka has done it. She has survived a potential first-round banana skin!

The two-time Australian Open champion didn't make it easy for herself at all.

It's almost as if a dramatic entrance on to Rod Laver Arena called for a dramatic first-round performance. Nevertheless, I look forward to seeing that entrance again!

Full credit to Antonia Ruzic, who is celebrating her 23rd birthday today, for going toe-to-toe with such an experienced player in just her second-ever Grand Slam appearance.

Antonia Ruzic is showing the lack of discipline in Osaka's game at times.

Osaka is such a talented ball-striker, but Ruzic is able to rush her from the ground and those shots become lower percentage shots.

Osaka is still trying to hit these outright winners and she just doesn't have the spacing for it. It has been impressive how Ruzic keeps pushing back.

A break point opportunity opens up for Antonia Ruzic, and she takes it!

She goes back to her original game plan of hitting hard and flat at Naomi Osaka, waiting for her to make the mistake.

The Croat gets a crucial advantage at a crucial time in this first-round match.

Antonia Ruzic posts her reply by winning four points back-to-back to hold serve.

She popped a beautiful drop shot off her racquet at 40-30, which caught Naomi Osaka off-guard, to keep things on level terms.

Her opponent is back to dictating play a bit more now though, which her coaches will be pleased with.

Antonia Ruzic has had these opportunities to step in and create an open space, get Osaka out wide and go behind her. She has just done it again.

It has been a good strategy from Ruzic.

Another shout of 'come on!' from Naomi Osaka as she holds to ensure this deciding set remains on serve.

At 40-15 up, the four-time Grand Slam champion hit an outrageous cross-court forehand at almost full-stretch, which Antonia Ruzic could only wave a hand at.

Allana in Airdrie: I can see this set having a couple of twists and turns yet. Naomi Osaka doesn't quite seem to have the consistency she'd want. Maybe letting Antonia Ruzic get into her head a little.

Antonia Ruzic successfully overturns another deficit!

The unseeded player, who is celebrating her 23rd birthday today, certainly doesn't want the party to stop on Rod Laver Arena.

    Over to you, Naomi Osaka.

  20. Ruzic breaks backpublished at 11:57 GMT 20 January

    Osaka 6-3 3-6 2-1 Ruzic*

Naomi Osaka is trying her best to unsettle Antonia Ruzic, but the Croat is playing her own game and is relatively unfazed.

An amazing effort as she manages to fight back from 40-15 to deuce.

Ruzic then knew if she applied the pressure, Osaka would make the mistake.

She hits a forehand long on cue for her 35th unforced error of the match.
