I don't actually know where to begin with trying to sum up today.

It started like this... Carlos Alcaraz, struggling with injury, giving up a 2-0 lead and finding himself a break down in the final set before coming back to win in five hours and 27 minutes against Alexander Zverev.

How did it end up like this... Novak Djokovic saving eight break points in the final set to down defending champion Jannik Sinner.

    Sinner 6-3 3-6 6-4 4-6 4-6 Djokovic

Djokovic was reminded of last year's US Open, when he spoke about the challenge of defeating Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz over five sets...

"You remember it well. I said it would be difficult, but not impossible. I said they were playing on a different level, I just have to find that level.

"I watched [Alcaraz v Zverev], what an incredible match. We tried to match that intensity. I think you guys got your value for money on the tickets, that's for sure. I want 10% from tonight's tickets sold!

"I saw Carlos [Alcaraz] after the match, he said sorry for delaying the start of our match. I told him I am an old man and I need to go to sleep early!

"I am looking forward to seeing him in a few days.

"I know I have to come back in a few days and fight the number one. I just hope I have enough gas to stay toe-to-toe with him. Let god decide the winner."

More from Novak Djokovic after his victory: "Some legends stayed up until 2am, thank you for being here tonight and for the support. You have been incredible. I love our passionate relationship.

"Tonight has been one of, if not the best nights atmosphere wise, support wise I have ever had in Australia. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Novak Djokovic spoke on court after his victory: "I'm lost for words, to be honest.

"It feels surreal, playing over four hours, it's almost 2am. I am reminiscing about 2012 when I played Rafa [Nadal] in the finals - That was almost six hours, but the intensity and quality of tennis was extremely high and that was the only chance I had against him.

"He [Sinner] had won the last five matches against me. He had my mobile number, so I had to change my number for tonight!

"Jokes aside, I told him at the next 'thanks for allowing me at least one'. I have tremendous respect for him, he is an incredible player and pushes you to the limit. He deserves a round of applause for his performance."

It's hard to put everything into words.

Great serving from Djokovic, it kept him in the match so often.

Sinner just could not break, his break percentage was ridiculously low for him. Sometimes you have them matches where you can't break and it plays on your mind.

Sinner threw everything at him in the fifth set, he came out swinging much harder and it looked like his set. Djokovic hung on and it was like the Djokovic of old.

We saw it last year here, he beat Alcaraz - will it be the same? Can his body recover? I don't think that is his concern right now, he is just happy to get to the final.

I am speechless. That was an extraordinary contest, totally absorbing to watch.

So fascinating in terms of the tactics. Sinner was so clinical in the first set and Djokovic came out swinging after, throwing the kitchen sink at Sinner.

Beautiful serving, the odd serve and volley, this is one of the most special contests.

We were treated earlier with Alcaraz and Zverev, now Djokovic giving away 14 years to his opponent. What a contest.

I'm going to keep giving you the crazy numbers behind Novak Djokovic's win and what it means.

This will be his first Grand Slam final appearance since Wimbledon in 2024. If he wins, it will be his first major title since the 2023 US Open.

It's 18 years since he won his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne. On Sunday, he'll be playing for a record-extending 11th Australian Open crown.

It's the first time he's beaten Jannik Sinner since 2023.

Novak Djokovic has to wipe away tears as he speaks to Jim Courier in his on-court interview. His coach is also in floods.

He's "lost for words", describes the match as "surreal", and jokes that he thanked Jannik Sinner for finally allowing him to win one of their meetings - the Italian had won the past five.

    Full quotes coming up shortly.
