Ryan Day beat fellow Welshman Mark Williams 6-5 to reach the fourth round in the UK Championship in York.
The 37-year-old fought back from 4-1 down and secured victory by potting pink in the final frame.
Day will face China's Li Hang in the next round after he beat Scott Donaldson of Scotland 6-1.
Williams, 42, had contemplated withdrawing from the competition after wife Jo was hospitalised, but stayed to take on Day.
Day told BBC Sport Wales: "I was disappointed to be 3-1 down at the interval which then became 4-1 pretty quickly but I just stayed confident. Patient was probably the key word.
"The game changed - I was disappointed to go 5-4 behind. The game turned - I could sense Mark wasn't comfortable with the new tip he had on his cue.
"After the interval it looked as if he'd sanded it down a bit because it was literally like a fruit pastille on the end of his cue. It was making a different noise."
Williams said: "I played quite poorly, but I can't take anything away from Ryan.
"I never felt comfortable at all - I had a new tip put on my cue last night. my other tip split.
"I'm not saying I would have won the match anyway, but I certainly would have played much better than I did."
Another Welshman, Michael White beat Matthew Selt 6-1 on Sunday and faces Ronnie O'Sullivan in the third round on Tuesday.
Over the weekend, Jamie Jones lost 6-5 to Ricky Walden, while Welsh compatriots Dominic Dale and Jak Jones were also knocked out.
Dale lost 6-5 to Graeme Dott (Sco), while Jones was whitewashed 6-0 by Stephen Maguire.
