'I don't know if there's an entitlement'published at 16:28 GMT 23 November 2025

More from Gregor Townsend: "Coaches aren't too important and relevant in team performance at times.
"We learn game to game. I've never been more convinced. The New Zealand game was one of the best performances we've seen. The 20 minutes against Argentina doesn't change what the team did the week before. Of course we want it to be perfect - we have to be better when the opposition have their moments.
"The game the players are putting out there is a game that can take us to success, whether that's Six Nations or beyond.
"We've got to make sure what we're talking about here. I don't know if there's an entitlement around us beating the All Blacks and Argentina - these are top-quality teams.
"We have no right to beat any team. We have focused a lot on the last 20 minutes and that's something we have to improve on, but to look at it and go 'the other stuff isn't good and we have to do something different', I totally disagree."

Scotland played against 14 players for 50 minutes today and only scored some tries once Tonga became tired and George Horne brought some tempo into the game. Gregor Townsend’s time is up!
Chris
Sure it was a grim result against Argentina and a disappointing result against New Zealand but at least we got the result today.
I think that some people forget that our player resources are limited and that we are still fighting above our weight. Ok Tonga are not in the top 10 but they can still be a tricky team at times.
Give Townsend and the team a break and celebrate a win.
Douglas
We only won the game because of Tonga's disciplines, not the performance. A hugely unsuccessful autumn series.

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells BBC Scotland:
"We imposed our physicality on Tonga a lot throughout the game. We felt the pressure we were putting Tonga under, they would crack at some point in terms of the spaces would open up and our fitness would tell.
"We could have scored more point during that period but Tonga are a top team and you have to work hard for your points.
"The 20 minutes we had against Argentina is the negative throughout the four games, while it's only 20 minutes it's 20 minutes that cost us a game and that's what we have to get right.
"We need to manage those momentum swings better, that's a big learning from this campaign.
"The players like they did today are the ones that drive our performance and I'm so grateful work with this player group.
"The way the team is playing, I believe, is inspiring our supporters, putting top teams under pressure and it should have led to victories. It didn't and that's what we're trying to work on."

You can’t get excited about beating USA and Tonga. Give Townsend till after the six nations and if there’s still no improvement he’s got to go!
Tobias
Sorry but Townsend gets no reprieve. Still has to go. A win over Tonga (no matter how emphatic) does not over shadow three years of standing still. His time is up before this generation disappears.

Scotland Captain Sione Tuipilotu tells BBC Sport: "I thought at times the Tongan side made it really difficult for us. They were racing up out of the lines but I thought the work we did in the first 40 minutes paid dividends.
"We wanted to make sure the last 20 was the strongest part of the game.
"We knew this week wouldn't solve all our problems and the scoreline won't solve anything but the most important thing week is that we stuck together.
"This is the hardest week I've ever had as a Scotland player and no one is hurting more than the players."

Stop disrespecting Tonga; a good win to be celebrated
Doneil
A game that essentially means nothing. Blew the two big games and won the 2 they should have won. Nothing gained from today barring filling coffers. Roll on URC next week.

Test match rugby is hard, it's brutal, you have to be on point.
Some quality individuals on both sides but I think Scotland handled it really well, even when the pressure came on.
There was a long period before Scotland got the scoreboard ticking over again. I thought the work they did in that period laid the platform for the sparkle to come later on.
Solid defensively, just kept fighting to win yards and the bench brought a tempo.
56 points with 14 changes is a good way to wrap up the series.
