  2. 'We've got to stick together'published at 17:48 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu laments the failure to take a chance to extend his side's lead in the second half.

"It was 21-0 and we have a chance but pull the trigger too early," he tells BBC Scotland. "But they go up the other end and score two quick tries.

"We score there and go 28-0 up, it is a different game. That's on us as a backline.

"It is going to be a painful couple of days, but we've got to stick together.

"We were not good enough tonight."

Scotland lost that game. There's no doubt about it.

Argentina had the ability and skill to win it, but it was down to Scotland.

Their lack of discipline at the offside line destroyed them.

They gave away far too many penalties.

It shows that every team we play against know that even if we are 21-0 up, we are vulnerable.

Thanks to our pals at Opta for this stat.

Today was just the third match between two Tier 1 nations to see one side fail to score in the first half, before going on to score 30+ points in the second half, after England v Ireland in 1988 (0-3 / 35-3) and Australia v New Zealand in 2022 (0-17 / 37-39 at FT).

Gregor Townsend is not accepting that his side have been unable to take that step up to compete the world's best.

"What the team showed and how they played, we were 21-0 up against one of the top teams in the world," Scotland's head coach tells BBC Scotland.

"It shows what they are capable of, but the defeat is obviously what we want to look at and how we can get better.

"But it's within these players' hands.

"We have got to pick ourselves up and make sure we give these supporters a good performance against Tonga next week."

In 2022, Scotland beat Argentina 52-29 at Murrayfield.

It says a lot about where both teams have gone since that point...

  7. 'Argentina deserved to win'published at 17:36 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

Gregor Townsend says individual errors cost Scotland dear.

"I thought on a couple of occasions, we showed good composure, but you need to do it every time because we are playing against a top team," the head coach tells BBC Scotland.

"After the first five minutes of the second half, it wasn't good enough.

"We know Argentina are a quality side and we built that lead with a good amount of effort and skill, but we needed to see it home and score more points in the second half.

"But we were on the back foot for too long and the discipline, which was mainly about our offsides, gave them field position and opportunities and, in the second half, they took them.

"Credit to Argentina, they put us under pressure and deserved to win in that final quarter."

  8. 'More disappointing than last week'published at 17:34 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend also pinpointed the turning point as the failure to consolidate their lead.

"A lot more disapointing this week than last week," he tells BBC Scotland.

"We obviously didn't handle that momentum change when we went 21-0 up and had an opportunity to go 28-0 up.

"It flipped I suppose on that moment and it ended up as a penalty and a yellow card under our posts.

"Argentina played really well during that period, carreras off the bench made a big difference for them, and we were on the back foot.

"But it's still disappointing not to see it through as we were still ahead after that yellow-card period."

  10. 'Have to be better in our discipline'published at 17:30 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells TNT Sports: "Second half performance, the last 35 minutes [went wrong].

"We went 21-0 up and were back on their try line and there's a huge momentum swing in that moment. The last 10 minutes wasn't good enough.

"Decisions and discipline will be the two areas we look most closely on.

"We have to be better in our discipline. If you give a team with momentum penalty after penalty, it makes it easier for them.

"Rugby's an 80-minute game and Argentina are a very good side."

That reckless pass from Finn Russell, picked off by Isgro, was the turning point. Argentina then stormed 80 yards to score almost straight away. From there, Scotland just fell apart. Could not hold onto the game after that mistake - utterly frustrating!

    Graeme

21-0 up then Russell throws that horrible pass in the Argentine 22 and that cost us a yellow card and three tries. Deserved to be booed at the end.

Gregor Townsend opted not to use Tom Jordan and George Horne off the bench.

With the game as stretched as it was, surely fresh legs in the backs would have helped Scotland?

  14. 'Spectacular unravelling'published at 17:23 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

    John Barclay
Former Scotland captain on TNT Sports

That is a disaster. 21-0 up and going for a fourth try.

The unravelling of it was spectacular. Scotland will be aware of how good Argentina can be. The last 25 minutes it was almost an unrecognisable side.

  15. 'Have to take a hard look at ourselves'published at 17:19 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

Scotland captain Sione Tuipolutu says the defeat hurts more than the loss to New Zealand.

"I don't think I could be as disappointed as I was last week, but I think this is more disappointing," he tells BBC Scotland.

"I said to the boys we are going to have to take a really hard look at ourselves.

"It is pretty gutting to be honest. We had a 14-point lead and we lose concentration and give away back to back penalties.

"The next couple of days are going to hurt and it starts with me, I'm the captain of the squad and I take responsibility as well.

"Today is not good enough. We should not be losing at home."

  16. 'We bottled it'published at 17:17 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

    Peter Wright
    Former Scotland prop on Sportsound

Argentina were looking poor and disorganised.

But we all know they are quality side and they showed how good they are.

We basically bottled it and forced the game when we didn't need to.

They exploited the edges out wide and this is a harder defeat to take than last week against New Zealand as we had that won at 21-0.

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

We'll hear more from Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu, but he hasn't minced his words talking to TNT Sports:

"We fell asleep at the wheel," he said. "It's not good enough.

"We started really well, getting a lot of purchase through the middle. It's going to be a painful couple of days.

"I don't think we put out the performance we can."

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

    Chris Paterson
Former Scotland international on BBC Scotland

What a second-half performance from Argentina.

I don't really believe that rugby can be influenced by individual - it is a team game - but Santiago Carreras coming off the bench was incredible.

It is one of the best displays from someone trying to turn the game - he was excellent the Bath fly-half.

But Scotland allowed that to happen with so little possession in the second half and Murrayfield is shellshocked.

  20. 'Difficult to stomach'published at 17:07 GMT 16 November 2025

    FT: Scotland 24-33 Argentina

    Greig Laidlaw
Former Scotland captain on TNT Sports

It's difficult to stomach. Scotland allowed Argentina back into the game with a couple of soft moments.

The players looked flat and we couldn't wrestle it back.
