Tonga number eight Solomone Funaki has left Dragons early without playing a competitive game because of injury misfortune.
The 31-year-old joined in the summer of 2024 but arrived with a knee injury because of an infection following surgery.
Funaki, nicknamed 'The Beast' at Moana Pasifika due to his explosive ball carrying, played in Super Rygbi Cymru for Pontypool and Newport only to then suffer a shoulder injury.
The 15-times capped Tongan international, who played at the 2023 World Cup, finally appeared in Dragons colours for the first time in the summer as a replacement in the pre-season win against Scarlets at Rodney Parade, playing with heavy strapping on his left knee.
However, a deal has been struck for Funaki to leave ahead of his contract expiring in the summer and he will return to New Zealand with his family.
"It's with a heavy heart that we have said farewell to Mone [Funaki]", said Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia.
"I've seen him at his best and he's been unfortunate a nasty knee injury and infection means we sadly haven't seen that here.
"I'm grateful he has made a clear decision on his future and how he moves forward, with the full support of the club.
"I wish the best for him and his family for the future and I'll stay connected with him as a coach and friend."
Dragons have fielded talisman Aaron Wainwright, Mackenzie Martin and Harrison Keddie at number eight this season.
"Unfortunately my knee and the plan to return has not gone as we hoped," said Funaki.
"It's been tough and I've now made the decision. I want to thank everyone at the club, the coaching staff, medical team and physios, for all the belief and all the hard work they put into me.
"I'm sorry that it didn't work out for me to get back on the field to give you what we all wanted and contribute to this great club.
"To the players, I appreciate your love and support. I do love this club, I've enjoyed being here, and there is no regret over me coming over."
