Wales centre Owen Watkin is in line for his Ospreys return this weekend after 11 months out because of a knee injury.

The 29-year-old is in contention for a place in the matchday squad for Saturday's European Challenge Cup fixture at Montauban.

Watkin has been out of action since rupturing knee ligaments in Wales' Six Nations opener against France in Paris at the end of January.

The centre took part in Ospreys' pre-match warm-up before Sunday's dramatic 24-21 comeback win against Connacht on Sunday along with number eight Morgan Morris, who has not played since April because of foot and calf injuries.

If Watkin ticks all the boxes in training this week then the 43-times capped back is likely to feature at Stade Sapiac.

"Owen is progressing really well, both him and Morgan Morris were in the warm-up and they will be around some conversations on selection over the next few weeks," said Ospreys head coach Mark Jones.

"That's exciting for us, it's good for them and good for Welsh rugby in general to get those boys out there.

"Owen is an international player and Morgan is an international-quality player in my eyes who just needs an opportunity."

Watkin's return is a huge boost to Wales, who have started with Eddie James, Nick Tompkins, Ben Thomas, Max Llewellyn, Johnny Williams, Joe Hawkins and Joe Roberts in midfield since his injury.

It also gives a lift to Ospreys as they look to build on their win against Connacht by beating Montauban before a home United Rugby Championship fixture against Munster and festive derbies versus Scarlets and Cardiff.

"Owen was a defensive leader for me and his expertise and diligence of his craft is very good," said Jones, who was promoted to head coach after previously being in charge of defence.

"He is one of the best defenders in the league in the 13 channel and is also a very skillful guy with a huge engine.

"He brings a lot to the team and is a great character with his energy and care for the group."

Ospreys will rotate their squad for the trip to France with Wales fly-half Dan Edwards set for a break after starting against Connacht fresh from wearing 10 on his back in all four autumn internationals.

Montauban, who are one from bottom of the Top 14, lost 41-17 to Zebre in Parma in their Challenge Cup opener.
