  2. 'Medvedev the latest to crack the code'published at 00:18 BST 13 September 2021

    Gigi Salmon
BBC Radio 5 Live tennis commentator

It was heartbreaking to see Novak Djokovic just burst into tears after that ninth game of the third set after the standing ovation from the crowd.

He had his head in his towel, his shoulders were shaking and the tears were still flowing as he went on to the court to start that 10th game.

He has done so much and there’s probably still so much more to come from him but it gets harder every year, every year he gets a bit older and there’s a little more belief in the generations coming through.

Daniil Medvedev is the latest player to have cracked the code – he’s beaten one of the ‘Big Three’, he’s done it in a Grand Slam final over the best of five sets.

  4. 'Five and an half extra hours in his legs'published at 00:15 BST 13 September 2021

BBC Radio 5 Live tennis commentator

It didn’t help, all the matches Novak played in the run-up to the final – you cannot play somebody like Daniil Medvedev with five and a half hours extra in your legs.

Daniil Medvedev is the first Russian since Maria Sharapova in 2006 to win a US Open singles title here. She’s in the crowd this evening.

He’s become the first man since Rafa Nadal in 2010 and the second since Ivan Lendl in 1987 to drop just the one set en route to the title.

  7. 'The best player in the tournament'published at 00:08 BST 13 September 2021

    Pat Cash
Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

Full credit to Medvedev – I thought he would win the Australian Open, I had him as my favourite and he didn’t show up in the final. This time it was a role reversal.

He’s a very, very good hardcourt player, a very good player on any surface but these hardcourts in New York, he absolutely loves and he was the best player in the tournament, without doubt – losing just one set the whole way through and beating Djokovic in the final convincingly.

He’s a fantastic athlete, has a big serve, all the shots and there were nervous issues towards the end of the match with double faults but he held on.

More from US Open champion Daniil Medvedev: "Last but not least I want to finish my speech on a very sweet note. It is a certain anniversary for me and my wife today. During the tournament I couldn't think of a present. After the semis I thought, if I lose in the final, I need to find a present fast. When I won, the only thing I thought was - well, if I lose, I will have no time to find a present. I love you Daria and thanks a lot."

Some of my friends are here - thank you guys because it is not an easy journey to win a Slam. I'm really thankful to you for helping me throughout this journey.

"I want to thank you guys [the crowd]. Today it was maybe a little bit more for Novak but that's completely understandable. Thoughout the week you guys gave me a lot of energy. Starting from 2019 long ago, it helped me through to today. It was not easy but thanks a lot guys."

More from runner-up Novak Djokovic: "I was thinking in both scenarios, visualing myself standing here in front of you guys and what would I say. I would like to say that tonight, even though I have not won the match, my heart is filled with joy and I am the happiest man alive because you guys made me feel very special on the court.

"You guys touched my soul. I have never felt like this is New York. I love you guys. Thank you so much for your support and everything you have done tonight for me. I love you and Iwill see you soon. Thank you."

    That goes down pretty well...

  16. 'If anyone deserves a Slam title, it is you'published at 23:53 BST 12 September 2021

US Open runner-up Novak Djokovic, speaking on court: "Thank you so much, guys. I would like to start off by saying congatulations to Daniil. Amazing match, amazing tournament. If there is anyone that deserves a Grand Slam title right now it is you, so well done.

"To your team, you have an amazing team, you are one of the greatest guys on the tour, we get along very well. I wish you many more Grand Slams, many more majors to follow, and I am sure you will be on this stage again in the future."

  18. 'A very, very human Djokovic'published at 23:48 BST 12 September 2021

    Pat Cash
Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

We think he's superhuman but it was a very, very human Novak Djokovic tonight – he didn’t have his feet moving, he didn’t have the energy.

Credit to Medvedev who came out there blasting his serve in the first set but the opportunity to turn it around was there in the second set – two games in a row Novak had break points, big opportunities to do it, and he couldn’t do it.

It was just one of those nights and it just goes to show how important grabbing that opportunity is when it’s there in these big matches.

It will be interesting to see what Novak says afterwards – whether he was just exhausted, whether the occasion got too much for him. It’s hard to know but it’s certainly an anti-climax in a way – we all hoped for a tight match.
