Defending champion Novak Djokovic needed all of his nous and quality to edge past Denis Shapovalov and set up a Wimbledon men's final with Italy's Matteo Berrettini on Sunday.

Canada's Shapovalov, 22, played superbly for the most part, only for Djokovic to claim the key moments on his way to a 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 7-5 win.

Berrettini earned a 6-3 6-0 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 win over Poland's Hubert Hurkacz. The seventh seed is the first Italian to reach the men's singles final.

The Queen's champion used his big forehand and serve to good effect to reach his first Grand Slam final, with Sunday's showpiece taking place just hours before his nation take on England in football's Euro 2020 final.

The 25-year-old is the first Italian man to reach a Grand Slam final since 1976.

"I have no words, really," Berrettini said. "I need a couple of hours to understand what happened. I think I never dreamed about this because it was too much for a dream."

  4. 'Shapovalov will win Grand Slams'published at 19:48 BST 9 July 2021

    Tim Henman
Former British number one on BBC TV

Denis Shapovalov will take so much away from this event, being through to his first Grand Slam semi-final - and then being very competitive on the day.

He had his chances in those first two sets. He wasn't able to take them but there's no doubt he will be back on this stage and he will go on to make finals and win Grand Slams because he's still so young.

He has a lot of weapons to his game and he can still improve that overall consistency.

  5. 'To give Novak toughest test speaks volumes'published at 19:46 BST 9 July 2021

    Boris Becker
Three-time Wimbledon champion on BBC TV

Big credit to Denis Shapolvalov as well - the tears at the end of the match and the performance in his first semi-final.

He's only had nine matches at Wimbledon altogether and for him to give Djokovic his toughest test so far in the tournament speaks volumes.

Credit to the great man - he finds his motivation and inspiration over and over again.

He thrives on it - that's why he plays tennis, to be in this moment.

It's so difficult to keep that up and he finds a way to do it.

Here is Novak Djokovic: "I don't think the scoreline says enough about the performance or the match. He was serving for the first set and was probably the better player, had many chances.

"I would like to give him a big round of applause for everything he has done today and also this two weeks. We are going to see a lot of him in the future, he is a great player.

"The most special tournament in the world for me, on this court, and there is no holding back. Once you step out, particularly at the latter stages of an event I dream of winning and the dream keeps going.

"I am trying to take out the maximum of my own abilities each match and see what happens.

"At this stage of my career, Grand Slams are everything and I have been very privileged to make history in the sport I truly love.

"Every time I hear there is something on the line that is historic it inspires me but at the same time I have to balance it and win only the next match."

Bobby Seagull: The standard of tennis from Denis Shapovalov has been very high. There is not much difference between him and Djokovic, but Novak has the temperament of someone who has been in 41 Grand Slam semis. Denis's time will come.

Charlene: What a man. What a performance. Just wow. In such awe of this man. Well done.

Shapovalov really brought the best out of Djokovic and Novak knew there would be small margins and he had to hang in there.

Shapovalov can produce some fantastic tennis, it is just under pressure this guy is ruthless. Nobody can find a way through.

It's an excellent serve out wide from Djokovic. Shapovalov, rather in hope than expectation, challenges but it's good and three match points for the world number one.

It must be so hard for Djokovic because he was bellowing back towards the crowd and I don't know if he is bellowing to them or at them - I think he is basically annoyed at them! He's saying 'take that you lot, I am going to beat this man whether you're with me or not'.
