It was a good match – it's always tough when it’s two Brits playing each other. Naomi is probably more match tight and confident, Laura is still getting the belief back. But it’s good to have another Brit into the second round of a main draw, even if one has to go out.

It’s a great thrill having Brits getting through, it gives everyone momentum and plenty to talk about.

Robson will need to come close more often before she’s able to get over the line. Laura looked utterly sick, as you’d expect, walking off court, but this has been the best two or three weeks for her for three years.

  4. Broady breaks new groundpublished at 22:39

That, by the way, was Naomi Broady's first win in the main draw at Flushing Meadows. As for Laura Robson, she's still only won one match on the main tour this year but did show signs that she was getting back to her best. Broady will next play the winner of the game between fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska and American qualifier Jessica Pegula.

    Broady 6-7 6-3 6-4 Robson

Broady unfurls a forehand winner down the line for 0-30 before spraying a moon ball from Broady miles wide. And that's your lot, Robson going long again and Broady breaking to love.

  6. Broady 6-7 6-3 5-4 Robson*published at 22:31 BST 30 August 2016

No such problems for Broady on her serve as she moves into a 40-15 lead, although she promptly sends down a double fault. But that is a hold for the woman from Stockport and Robson will serve to stay in the match.

Both women have to do better with these opportunities - you have to seize the intiative.

  8. Broady* 6-7 6-3 4-4 Robsonpublished at 22:28 BST 30 August 2016

Broady getting stuck into some drink and gels between games, while Robson is a study in serenity. Broady balloons a forehand long but follows that with a beast of a backhand that clips the baseline. Double from Robson for 15-30, glimmer for Broady... she frames a backhand return wide... Robson pulls out an ace down the middle, her sixth, before serving up another double. Broady has a good look at that second serve but misses with the return before flailing a forehand long. Robson was in all sorts of trouble with her serve there but Broady let her off the hook.

  9. Broady 6-7 6-3 4-3 Robson*published at 22:21 BST 30 August 2016

Marvellous rally, which finishes with Robson attempting a hot dog between her legs when perhaps she could have just lobbed one up. Another long rally and this one ends with a poor shot into the base of the net - break point saved. Good serve out wide from Broady and Robson is unable to deal with it and that's a hold. Still too close to call.

  10. Broady* 6-7 6-3 3-3 Robsonpublished at 22:16 BST 30 August 2016

Broady soaking up the hits behind the baseline and waiting for Robson to make the error, which she does for 15-30. Broady flays a forehand miles long, before Robson nets with a forehand, her 32nd unforced error. Break point... Broady fires a backhand return into the net. Double fault from Robson, her seventh, but Broady blows a second break point with an errant backhand. Broady with the drop-shot but Robson has it covered, chasing it down and putting away the forehand winner. Broady sprays a forehand wide and Robson is out of another hole.

Broady breezes through another service game, she's now won 11 points in a row on serve. Broady looking the most likely heading towards the business end.

  12. Broady* 6-7 6-3 2-2 Robsonpublished at 22:06 BST 30 August 2016

Deary me, Broady top-edges a return which takes an age to come down and Robson sprays her drive-volley well wide. Terrific tennis there, Robson finishing a lengthy baseline rally with a backhand pass. That's a hold...

This one goes to deuce, and this really is very difficult to call at the moment. Robson with a whipped forehand winner for the advantage, an ace for the advantage again, before Broady hammers a forehand long to hand her opponent the game.

This is where the seasons they have had play a massive part – Broady is at about 65% of matches won this year, and Robson is probably at about the opposite. To break there would have given Robson a massive boost but now she has to defend her serve, which has been an issue for her all year with that suspect ball toss.

  16. Broady 6-7 6-3 1-0 Robson*published at 21:53 BST 30 August 2016

We think that prolonged break was in order for Broady to change her dress, she returned with a sweaty item and chucked it under her chair. Before promptly pounding another ace down Robson's way. Robson showing good movement, sweeping towards the net and putting away the cross-court backhand. Break point. Robson has a chance but pokes her forehand wide but that's better, a swept forehand down the line. However, Broady stands tall again, holding with a whipped forehand down the line.

  17. Broady 6-7 6-3 0-0 Robson*published at 21:46 BST 30 August 2016

Broady has left the court for a comfortableness break, while Robson sits Sphynx-like on her seat, pondering what on earth just happened. We appear to have a heat rule in place, either that or Naomi Broady has got lost on the way back from the toilet, a la Spinal Tap...

  18. Broady* 6-7 6-3 Robsonpublished at 21:38 BST 30 August 2016

Three break points and three set points for Broady, who has now won nine points in a row. Double fault, and I'm not sure where that came from, one minute Broady looked like her head was gone, the next she was romping to the set. Odd.

  20. Broady 6-7 5-3 Robson*published at 21:37 BST 30 August 2016

Straightforward hold for Broady that's three games in a row for her and suddenly the pendulum has swung the other way. Robson serving to stay in the set.
