Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony reflects on winning his 100th cap:

It's hard to sum up. It was a very special night for me and my family, and the boys really showed up for me. It was a big occasion. There were some special words said in the dressing room beforehand by people I look up to a lot.

I don't know about impeccable but we put that first-half performance together very nicely. Scotland are one of the best attacking sides in the world but we defended well and were clinical in attack ourselves.

We will have bigger tests down the line but we will enjoy this for the next 60 minutes at least.

Stuart McCloskey darted back to Ireland last week to be with his wife for the birth of their second child and the newborn has managed to make it to France to watch his dad play at the World Cup.

Now that is a special, special week.

As an Irish fan, we need to keep calm. We can't read into the early games. South Africa kicked (or didn't kick) themselves out of it and unfortunately for Scotland, they couldn't finish their dinner. New Zealand are still New Zealand, gonna be a hell of a test.

  5. Farrell savours 'special, clinical performance' from Irelandpublished at 22:24 BST 7 October 2023

    FT: Ireland 36-14 Scotland

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell speaking after the game: "I think it was a special performance because Scotland really came off the blocks. Obviously we scored the try early doors, which was a great start, but they really came out of the blocks after that.

"They threw everything at us. I thought our attitude, our defence to try and keep them out for long spells was the making of the game. We were calm enough and clinical enough when we got back down the other end of the field to put some points on the board.

"A really clinical first half performance and it had to be because they are a great side, Scotland, to get that many points at half-time was a good innings from us."

On facing New Zealand: "Well it's what dreams are made of. As far as a quarter-final is concerned it doesn't get any tougher, the respect we have got for New Zealand is through the roof and hopefully they have got a bit of respect for us.

"We will dust ourselves off first of all and recover properly from this one. But I would say that a couple of weeks ago we got some stick from walking around and thanking our fans, when they turn out in their thousands like this it is the least we can do."

Any Scotland fan who doesn't think that was embarrassing needs to have a word with themselves, because that is part of the problem.

This 'it'll do' attitude, 'get off the boys' back'. It's garbage - it always was and it always will be. 36-0 down in less than an hour, I don't care who you're playing, have some pride.

All those lads will be embarrassed, humiliated by that experience.

The talk before the game - was that bluster, was it bravado?

If you're going to talk the talk, you have to do more than Scotland did in that first 40 minutes. The easy option is to credit Ireland. They do deserve credit for how they repelled Scotland in the opening stages, but thereafter Scotland made it too easy for Ireland.

The lack of variety that Scotland brought in attack, and the lack of intensity.

Scotland are the fifth best side in the world and played like it. No disgrace in that. But three of the best five teams drawn in the same group? That's the real disgrace tonight.

  12. 'The best I’ve seen Ireland play'published at 22:14 BST 7 October 2023

    FT: Ireland 36-14 Scotland

Scotland captain Jamie Ritchie, speaking after the game, on stopping Ireland: "I don’t know, it’s a tough one. If I knew the answer, the result might be different. What we try to do is play our game - unfortunately it wasn’t enough tonight and full credit to Ireland, that’s probably the best I’ve seen them play."

On what sets Ireland apart from Scotland: "They all buy into how they want to play, they’re very accurate, they do the simple things really well around the breakdown, they defend really well as a unit and they’re really hard to break down."

On Scotland's World Cup campaign: "Really proud of how we’ve stuck together. We had a bit of hardship from the first game, proud of how we stayed in the fight today, we showed how we can score some points at the end."

Ireland were fantastic in that first half and controlled the game just how they wanted to. They manipulated Scotland just how they wanted and Scotland couldn't get close to them.

Ireland got a try early in the second half and it was pretty much over and done with.

Their power game in the first half was really difficult to stop. Ireland are in the driving seat and they need to slam that advantage home, but any team who can stop their power game will undoubtedly win the World Cup.

  14. Credit to 'outstanding' Ireland - Townsendpublished at 22:11 BST 7 October 2023

    FT: Ireland 36-14 Scotland

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has been talking to the BBC post-match:

"They were very clinical, very accurate and I thought they put a huge effort in defensively when we had a bit of pressure in that first 20 minutes. They are an outstanding team and we saw that tonight.

"When you play the top teams, you've got to take your opportunities and we didn't do that in the first quarter. That was probably our best period of the game and when the game was lost we did come back into it.

"I'm proud of the effort in the second half. The game had gotten away from us, so we focused on winning back respect. To get two tries against such a top team, we'll take a little bit out of that.

"We're very disappointed with the result and the first-half performance, but credit to Ireland who were very, very good."

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton, speaking to ITV Sport: "I thought it [the atmosphere] wouldn't get any better after South Africa but they have proved me wrong again. It's incredible and they keep turning up for us.

"It's important that we keep turning up for them. They give us the best days of our lives and we give them something similar, I'm sure."

"We're delighted to win the Pool and we know this is where we want to be now. We're in the quarter-finals against the toughest opposition we could get. The way the draw was made three years ago turned out to be a bit unfair but it's the hand that we were dealt and we have to be ready for New Zealand next week."

Irish scrum-half Jamie Gibson-Park speaking after the game: "I'm pretty lucky aren't I? The hard work gets done in front of me and I am just thankful to have such a great pack and such a great backline really."

On being on the wing at the end of the match: "I felt like a fish out of water at one stage but we do a fair bit of work on covering positions in scenarios like that.

"I have trained a bit there, not to say I felt comfortable. It's incredible to be here, it's an incredible atmosphere and we thank our fans for coming out, it's incredible to be a part of."

Ireland are a world-class side. They have beaten everybody, and they have routed Scotland tonight, embarrassed Scotland tonight.

I thought Scotland were better than this. It was men against boys.

Scotland have one trick. If they can't beat you by going wide, they can't beat you. Scotland are never going to win a trophy playing this way and that is the bitter reality.

Ireland, France, South Africa, New Zealand see them coming and shut them down.
