  1. Records tumble as Ireland open in stylepublished at 17:00 BST 9 September 2023

    FT: Ireland 82-8 Romania

They may have conceded a surprise Romania try after just three minutes, but Ireland got their act together very quickly to run out 82-8 winners in their Rugby World Cup opener in Bordeaux.

It was a record World Cup win for the Irish and captain Johnny Sexton, playing his first game since March, broke their record points tally for the competition with two tries and seven conversions.

Sterner tests lie ahead for Ireland in Pool B, starting with Tonga next week, but for now the world's top-ranked side are off to a flyer.

Slight negatives - Garry Ringrose, Hugo Keenan and James Lowe probably made errors today that we're not use to seeing from those guys. It's good that they've had their blowout now, but they're going to have to get their form really really quickly and it's not going to take much but it's just the standards that we're all use to that we expect so much more from them.

  3. 'Team of winners'published at 16:46 BST 9 September 2023

Ireland are a team of winners, that's why they're the best team in the world, because they're going in with this mindset.

The power of the mental side of rugby is so important and I think the statement in the 83rd minute to score when they could have easily kicked it out, but didn't, is very positive.

  4. We had to improve our discipline - Farrellpublished at 16:44 BST 9 September 2023

    FT: Ireland 82-8 Romania

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell on ITV:

It is great to get it underway. It wasn't great after a few minutes, mind you, but we dusted ourselves down and got back on flow pretty quickly.

We were disrupting our own flow with our indiscipline in the first half but we had a good chat about that at half-time and it improved after the interval.

One thing for sure is that next week will be tougher than that.

An awesome start, the feel good factor around this team continues to grow.

Andy Farrell's lasting line from Thursday's team announcement was 'It's business time' and despite a shaky start in the opening minutes, his side lived up to their pre-tournament hype.

The 48-year-old is known for his attention to detail and that paid off today as the men in green cruised to 82-8 win over a lacklustre Romanian side.

Pre-tournament friendly matches in Portugal and Bayonne ultimately acclimatised Ireland to the soaring temperatures which they played in Bordeaux today.

Much tougher battles lie ahead for the world's number one team but as the temperate escalated today, so did the scoreline and Farrell will be very happy with that.

  7. 'So many positives'published at 16:34 BST 9 September 2023

There are no injuries we can see, the bench has been emptied, they've all had a run out, Sexton has fitted back in, McCarthy has had a tremendous debut and has looked really impressive and Bundee Aki was outstanding throughout.

There are so many positives coming out of this game today that Ireland will move on from here with great confidence going into the Tonga game.

No, we're not losing the run of ourselves at all. Tonga is a step up and South Africa and Scotland beyond that again but as a starting point, wow.

  8. 'We will take that' - O'Mahonypublished at 16:33 BST 9 September 2023

    FT: Ireland 82-8 Romania

Peter O'Mahony speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: It was difficult. Fair play to Romania, you saw the way they rocked up, they put us under the sticks and it was a right wake-up call for us.

We put some phases together that we are happy with. It was a pleasure coming out here today with the fans.

Eighty-two points in our first game, we will take that. I am delighted.

  9. Make that a recordpublished at 16:32 BST 9 September 2023

    FT: Ireland 82-8 Romania

It's not just a hugely impressive opening win but that 82-8 scoreline makes that a record victory for Ireland in World Cups.

    Tommy Bowe

Credit to Ireland to keep on playing. To make it to 80 points in your opening match of the World Cup is a statement.

I'm very impressed and can't wait to see how far Ireland can go in this tournament.

Romania are put out of their misery as Ireland make an emphatic start to their World Cup campaign with a thumping win in Bordeaux.

  13. Aki 'unstoppable'published at 16:23 BST 9 September 2023

    Ireland 75-8 Romania

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

For me, McCarthy and Aki have been the outstanding players from the word go.

Aki has had a really, really good game in every respect of an inside centre, he's done all the nitty gritty and he's been there to add on the finer points at the end.

He's so physically strong, he's built like a brickhouse and when you add that determination, he's basically unstoppable.

    Two minutes on the clock.

    And another sloppy Ireland line-out.

That'll be high up on the 'to-do' list on the training ground this week, you would think.

  15. Ireland in 'total control'published at 16:17 BST 9 September 2023

    Ireland 75-8 Romania

    Tony Ward

Ireland are in total control now, it's exhibition stuff. But that said, you still have to do it and you still have to compete with the heat and to wear out the opposition and Ireland have certainly done that.

Some of the quality of the ball handling and the interplay between backs and forwards has been outstanding and we know that's the hallmark of this side when they're at their best. Right now, that's what we're seeing.

Ireland with a line-out a few yards from the Romania line, but Romania turn it over.

That's a few Irish line-outs that have been far from perfect today.

You can be sure Andy Farrell will be making note of that.

Ireland have got better as the game has gone on. McCarthy, on his first World Cup start, showed silky footwork for his try. A wonderful counter-attack.

Some slick handling by Ireland and soft hands by Iain Henderson who works the ball wide to Peter O'Mahony who gets in for second try.

And it's an impressive conversion from Jack Crowley, too, from a wide area. That'll do him the world of good.

  20. Van der Flier 'vital'published at 16:10 BST 9 September 2023

    Ireland 61-8 Romania

    Tony Ward
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

I have to say I think Van Der Flier has made a huge difference, he almost lifts us up a gear with that injection of pace he gives.

He is a worthy World Player Of The Year and a lovely lad too - very modest.

He is absolutely vital to this side when they're at their best
