Murrayfield has nearly emptied, with only a few hundred fans down at the front to give the players some applause left.

Families of the squad are there too. Those getting on trains and in cars will know the feeling of a Scotland hard-luck story all too well.

In the end, Scotland faded and lacked the control they needed. But there is still so much to take from that game into next week against Argentina, and the Six Nations.

And surely the Finn Russell question is over?

New Zealand head coach Ian Foster tells Amazon Prime: "It was a tough game. I thought Scotland were tremendous, they put us under a lot of pressure.

"Our bench was strong and that strength and composure was important.

"It was a high penalty count game and that allowed Scotland to get into our half too often, so we need to work on that.

"It would have been easy for us to panic in the last 15 minutes and Sam Whitelock deserves a lot of credit for keeping the boys calm."

"It was a show of resilience after going 14-0 down to one of the best teams in the world, but we didn't get the win.

"You don't get to play New Zealand very often and that's the best opportunity in our history we've had to beat them."

"We're glad we could put on a decent show for Doddie (Weir), just a shame we couldn't get the win.

"We spoke about being brave today and nothing defines brave more than Doddie."

Sickening for Scotland but their error count just started to increase with about 17 minutes to go... A Hogg spillage, a Dempsey yellow card, a Nel penalty at a scrum, another penalty and then another.

They did so many brilliant things in the game but when it came to closing it down they didn't have the control to do it.
