So it's goodbye from us, and goodbye from him...

Rory Best's farewell to Irish rugby did not turn out the way he'd have liked, but Ireland came up against a New Zealand side in ruthless form in Tokyo.

For the All Blacks, it's Eddie Jones and England next.

But fear not, you don't have to wait until next weekend for more action - we'll be back bright and early tomorrow to bring you full coverage of Wales v France and Japan v South Africa.

More from Joe Schmidt, who is leaving Ireland after this tournament: "Irish rugby is in a really good place. This year hasn't been great but I felt if we had another couple of days to prepare we might have been a little bit better.

"We had a few niggles and weren't sure exactly who we'd have out on Saturday. We created our own uncertainty by not making the most of field position when we had those chances."

Aaron Smith just had to grab an All Blacks flag from the crowd.

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt, speaking to ITV: "We gave them too many access points into the game, turned the ball over, missed opportunities to get into their zone and put pressure on. They were able to retrieve a few kicks from the line that we should have made the best of.

"They're the sorts of things that erode confidence. Once they get ahead you're chasing the game and have to take risks that, against a team like that, if you're not executing perfectly they'll take advantage of.

"We have been flat this year. When you reach a height there's always a risk you'll slip off a little bit. It wasn't complacency. We made a target of ourselves, we've been able to sneak up on New Zealand a couple of times but I know they were very much up for the game tonight.

"There's a few elements that stood out pretty well - the line-out and scrum were solid - but you need more than that."

All Blacks forward Brodie Retallik speaking to ITV: "It’s what Test match footy is all about – physical, high pace and I thought it an awesome spectacle."

On next week's semi-final opponents England: "We have only seen bits and bobs, and I saw a bit of the Australia game, but they are playing with great skill. They have great outside backs with a good forward pack. We’ll knuckle down to playing them this week."

New Zealand's attacking stats from that one were pretty impressive, as you'd expect.

The All Blacks made 13 clean breaks to Ireland's two, beat 29 defenders to their opponent's 11 and made a staggering 461 metres to 251.

They also made more tackles then Ireland - 138 to 108 - and conceded less turnovers - nine to Ireland's 17.

Andrew Priestley: Today signalled the end of a golden age of Irish rugby. The rebuild job that Andy Farrell has on his hands is truly massive. The team now needs to be built around Larmour, Ringrose, Stockdale, Henderson and James Ryan, who should be the new captain.

Stuart O'Maynard: A great captain and servant for Irish Rugby a real gent. Not your day today up against the finest side in the world. Enjoy your well earned retirement Rory you deserve it. You will be missed on the world stage. Take a huge bow.

New Zealand coach Steve Hansen: "Just before I talk about what we do, I want to acknowledge Rory Best and Joe Schmidt. They've been instrumental in making Ireland the number one ranked team in the world. Big congratulations to them on their career. Well done to them, they've done great things for Irish rugby.

Then asked about his own side: "We've worked really hard on our fitness. We pride ourselves on working hard. You could probably tell in the last 10-15 minutes that we missed that game.

"Scott McLeod and Ian Foster have got both the defence and attack working really well."

Rory Best is retiring from rugby having announced his intention to see out this tournament before its start.

We all thought Ireland would have to be at the top of their game to win today. They made a few uncharacteristic errors. New Zealand were just clinical today, they were phenomenal. I don't think many teams would have beaten them today.

Ireland captain Rory Best gets a phenomenal reception as he steps up to speak to the on-pitch interviewer.

Here's an emotional Best, who is retiring after this tournament: "I would just like to thank this unbelievable crowd, it started with an incredible atmosphere.

"The All Blacks were fantastic. We felt we had prepared well and had a game plan - they just came out of the blocks hard and never let us get off that again.

"They were just really clinical, didn't let us get on the front foot. This is a momentum game, especially in knockout rugby. The boys will look back at this but you have to give enormous credit to the All Blacks.

"I have loved every minute of it. The crowd have been fantastic, the support from home when we're home or away, my team-mates and coaching staff and particularly Joe - he brought Irish rugby and my game to a different level."

That's seven World Cup quarter-final outings for Ireland, and seven defeats.

Would they have reached the semis if they'd topped the pool and faced South Africa in the last-eight instead? Who knows, but this one will hurt.

Joe Schmidt has been a trans-formative character in Irish rugby, starting off at Leinster. He took this Irish side to a level never previously seen. There have been so many firsts.

But unfortunately the measure of his career was always likely to be this World Cup, after the last one. His ambition would have been to go further than they ever have before. The defeat to Japan now looks worse because it meant they had to play New Zealand today.
