  2. 'Team performance'published at 17:01 BST 27 October 2018

    England 18-16 New Zealand

    BBC Red Button

England team manager Jamie Peacock: "Every player played well and when you look at the squad, it is difficult to pick a man of the match, everyone was 8.5 or 9 out of 10.

"It was a calm performance and fronted up physically, we moved the ball well and it was a complete team performance. Quite a few played showed they are ready for the international level.

"England were excellent in both attack and defence, You do not want to on lose the tight games, especially the first in a tri-series.

"That try will stick with Oliver Gildart for a long time, he is sat in the changing room saying, 'I can't believe it, I can't believe.' The finish was world class, it was sublime."

  3. Lot to build onpublished at 16:59 BST 27 October 2018

    England 18-16 New Zealand

    BBC Red Button

England full-back Jonny Lomax: "It was a great performance and a battle of attrition, the players had to dig in deep and show up for each other until the end.

"We managed to get in front and although we got to drawing, we were still a bit behind. Wins are dependent on defence and managed to get it.

"We have a lot to build on and the Kiwis do to. We relied on each other and everyone was accountable.

"They got some good kicks on me but I am made up for the boys."

Gareth Shepherd‏: Great test match- should be tight, should be physical and fine margins deciding it. @England_RL, external Will be much better for the run. Well played Luke Thompson and Tommy Makinson too.

  5. 'High-standard game'published at 16:54 BST 27 October 2018

    England 18-16 New Zealand

    Brian Noble
Ex-Great Britain coach on BBC One

I thought Tommy Makinson was outstanding - he got the team rolling.

To follow Ryan Hall in respect of what he did in the World Cup - he made metres and got the team going forward.

I thought it was a high-standard game and the separation was the Gildart try towards the end.

  6. 'We will grow a lot from that'published at 16:51 BST 27 October 2018

    England 18-16 New Zealand

    BBC Red Button

New Zealand coach Michael Maguire: "We definitely let off the pressure a few times.

"We need to make sure we get a lot of lessons out of that one - the pressure was released a few times, allowing England to get back at us.

"You have got to be able to do it under pressure. We will grow a lot from that. It is about understanding what Test match footy is all about - it is all about one or two plays.

"We had an opportunity to win that game - I've got a very capable team and a lot of confidence and belief in them.

"What we will work on this week is the little areas of the game - understanding that at this level you have got to do your job at all times of the game."

  7. 'Remarkable effort'published at 16:47 BST 27 October 2018

    England 18-16 New Zealand

    BBC Red Button

England head coach Wayne Bennett: "Two years ago is a bit long and you need a bit of luck, we did not get it that day in the loss to New Zealand, we did today.

"The players are certainly developing, that is for sure. We have so many players out from the World Cup - about 10 - so makes it a remarkable effort. We are building depth in the squad.

"I enjoyed Oliver Gildart's try for those who did not think he should be here. It was magnificent, what we love about football, beating a couple of guys from 50 meters. That is why you want people to watch it.

"We needed to get through this game and we can do better in the halves. George Williams was involved all day and is a very skillful player.

"It was a great Test match, I love Test football and we played Australia in the World Cup final and lost 6-0. If this is the standard, people will watch it and that is what I want.

"England are proud, did their best and if we can continue then it won't be had to get people to watch us."

  8. 'Desire to defend'published at 16:43 BST 27 October 2018

    Denis Betts
Former England assistant and Widnes coach, BBC One

You have some talent in this side, you have people who can open a game up, but you have got to have the desire to defend, to really want to hold your defensive line.

You are in an international arena, what you get with Tommy Makinson is competition. He will go for every ball like his life depends on it. It was because of him England got the first try.

  9. 'Need to do homework'published at 16:40 BST 27 October 2018

    England 18-16 New Zealand

    BBC One

New Zealand skipper Dallin Watene-Zelezniak on what went wrong for his team: "I don't know to be honest, we did not play to the best of our ability, we did not execute like we wanted to.

"We have two more games against them and hopefully we can turn it around.

"We are all professionals and did not get the result today, we have to go and do our homework and come back bigger and better next week."

England's Jake Connor: "Massive game, we got off to a great start and we did not want to let them win and trail the series.

"They were giving it so you have to give it back, you cannot back down. What a game it was.

"Rules are rules, I did not have a clue what was going on and the penalty try was fortunate for us."
