Manchester United booked their Champions League place with a game to spare thanks to a comfortable win over a dismal Chelsea side at Old Trafford.

Casemiro headed the hosts in front, with Anthony Martial sweeping in Jadon Sancho's pass from close range to double their advantage.

Bruno Fernandes added United's third from the penalty spot after being fouled by Wesley Fofana.

And another Fofana error saw Marcus Rashford score a fourth before Joao Felix's late consolation for the Blues, who suffered their eighth defeat in 10 games under Frank Lampard and their 16th overall in a desperate campaign.

The result meant United consigned old rivals Liverpool to Europa League football next season.

It was not all good news for the home side though as Brazilian winger Antony was taken off on a stretcher in tears after suffering a lower leg injury in an innocuous challenge with Trevoh Chalobah - with the FA Cup final against Manchester City less than two weeks away.

For Chelsea, their sorry season - their worst in almost two decades - cannot come to an end quickly enough, although their fans have at least retained their sense of humour as they sang "we've scored a goal" as they celebrated Felix's effort.

We have one day of Premier League football this season left. The title and the Champions League race is all sorted, as is the Europa League.

Aston Villa, Tottenham and Brentford are all vying to get the one Europa Conference League spot, while two of Everton, Leicester and Leeds will join Southampton in being relegated to the Championship.

These are Sunday's fixtures. It's going to be dramatic.

  4. 'A bad year for the club'published at 22:51 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

More from Frank Lampard to Sky Sports: "It's a bad year for the club. The important thing is you get to the bottom of how it improves. It needs a rebuild, the club will move on in the summer in terms of the squad. Things need to improve to get to the level."

On the size of the job for the next manager: "To come in without a pre-season and assess, it's probably not my time to give my opinions. It'll be someone else's decisions and a pre-season and start and look will be imperative."

On what he's learned this season: "I don't know. If you ask me what I've learnt in this short period, not so much in terms of coaching because if you haven't got the basics, those things aren't that important. If that's not there then from a coaching point of view there are hard things.

"A lot of the plus points you gain from what the team are fighting for and how they find that extra bit.

"I love working for this club and that's not changed from the moment I've been here."

  5. Players' effort will hurt Lampard - Redknapppublished at 22:50 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp, speaking on Sky Sports: "Having played with Frank Lampard at England, he trained harder than anybody and if he says players are not putting in 100% - that's a non negotiable.

"If you don't train well during the week, you can't perform well in matches. That creates a really bad culture at the club and that will really hurt him. He is a winner, he does not want to be on the end of 4-1 losses.

"These players are on massive contracts, this is a lot more difficult job than people think."

  6. 'I've realised the collective standards'published at 22:49 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard to Sky Sports on what made the difference today: "The clinical nature in front of goal. We were the better football team in the first half - in possession, chances we matched them at least. To be 2-0 down is probably a sign of where we're at. Second half, probably a sign of where we're at."

On if the problems are in both boxes: "Our goal count for the season shows it's a problem we don't score goals enough. We gave them some threats in the first half but not many in the first half. Some of the defending in the second half showed why we play a back five at times."

On how he feels: "Disappointed with it. We have to be better than that. It's the end of a long season. There are some technical details inside you have to work daily to do the standards things you say, they are a fact. Maybe with United you see there's some experience at both ends of the pitch that made the game as it was. It's a reality for the players."

On the importance of standards: "Any team that wins or consistently gets results has them. Without them the tactics don't matter.

"Training well every day, trying to win, being a collective unit. I understand it's hard for the coaches this year at the club as it's a big squad and I've lived in that. Sometimes you can say maybe it's a factor but as a player you have to put it to the side and focus on your own game.

"Since I've come in I've realised some of the collective standards. We have to realise why the club is where it's at. There's definitely not a lack of effort. I was fortunate to be here for many years, you can be here the next year and see that someone has improved on their standards."

    • Marcus Rashford's goal was Manchester United's 12th goal by a substitute in the Premier League this season, their joint-most such strikes in a single campaign (level with 2017-18).
    • Since his return to the Premier League in February 2022, Christian Eriksen has more assists from a dead ball than any other player (five). His assist for Man Utd tonight was his sixth in the competition against Chelsea – only against Stoke (eight) has he provided more in the competition.
    • Since his Manchester United debut in February 2020, no player has scored more Premier League penalties than Bruno Fernandes (15, level with Jorginho).
  8. 'Still not where we want to be'published at 22:39 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

    Manchester United

More from Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports: "I'm comfortable here. I remember after the second game [the 4-0 loss at Brentford] it was tough but we've constructed a team with a good spirit, work well on the training pitch and get results.

"We're still not where we want to be but we're back in the Champions League and I think that was a really important step."

On the focus going forwards: "We have to work on the squad [in the summer]. Next week [the FA Cup final against Manchester City] is going to be big and we will do everything in our power. We have to get well prepared and give us the best chance to get the cup. Sunday, let's focus on that, next week, and then we'll work in the background for next season.

On contract negotiations with Marcus Rashford: "We're working on that. I have a good feeling about that. Marcus wants to stay, we want him to say."

On what Casemiro brings to the team: "He's a massive player. Such a good signing. He adapted so well to Premier League football. He missed many games and we noticed that. When he's not there our game is different. You see how important he is in everything. This week twice he's scored. The first goal is always the most important of the game. He's doing a massive job and we're really happy."

  9. Another losspublished at 22:36 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

This was Chelsea's 22nd defeat in all competitions this season, their most in a single campaign since 1978-79, when they lost a club record 29 times and were relegated from the top-flight.

  10. Man Utd need a number nine - Hasselbainkpublished at 22:35 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

More from ex-Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, speaking on Sky Sports: "Manchester United need a number nine. They need Marcus Rashford to score 30 goals again but also a number nine to score in the 20s and they need more creativity.

"They have done incredibly well here [at Old Trafford] but not won away from home so much and haven't won against the top nine.

"That means that don't have the character in the team to go away and win, that's what they need to improve."

  11. 'We belong in the Champions League'published at 22:30 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to Sky Sports: "This club belongs in the Champions League. It's not easy in the Premier League so a lot compete for that. It's massive when you get it done."

On what he was looking for today: "[That] we wanted to win. We showed the winning attitude. Chelsea have outstanding players but in the counter attacks we were really good, really dangerous. We scored four in the end. We should've scored more but they could score as well."

On the difference between the two halves: "Our defence was better second half. First half we had problems between the lines. They played without pressure, could go forward. You have to strike them and take advantage of the spaces you get and we didn't always. Second goal was late in the first half and could've been earlier."

On the focus for the next game: "Still we can be third in the league. It's important to keep focus, not getting injuries as well. But also get a home record. It's going to be an important game, we want to win that game."

On Antony and Luke Shaw's injuries: "It's difficult to say. Wait for 24 hours and we'll know more."

While it's joy for Manchester United, it's disappointment for Liverpool, who will be left in the Europa League next season.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, writing on Twitter, says: "I’m totally devastated. There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed.

"We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down."

  14. 'A big job for whoever comes in'published at 22:20 BST 25 May 2023

    FT: Manchester United 4-1 Chelsea

Ex-Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, speaking on Sky Sports, says: "Chelsea were in a really good position but didn't capitalise on their chances and Manchester United shouldn't have been 2-0 up but in the second half you need to kick on and they never did.

"They looked defeated, individual mistakes and it went from bad to worse. There's a big job for whoever comes in, we all think it will be for Mauricio Pochettino.

"It's a big job in character, how they want to play and what you give on the pitch. That was a bit disappointing in the second half."

    Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes speaking to Sky Sports: "[Getting the Champions League] is decent, it's not perfect because we want more. For what we did this season it's perfect. We get the trophy which was our goal after seeing we couldn't get the Premier League. Now it's about finishing the league well and going to FA Cup."

On the fans at Old Trafford this season: "They've been amazing for us. We've won many games at home. They've been creating a great atmosphere for us. They know how important they are for us. We just appreciate all the effort."

On reaching the Champions League and stopping Liverpool getting there: "We know it means a lot [to the fans]. For us it's about getting our goals. We know we'd be happy also for Liverpool to not be there but for us it's about getting the best for ourselves."

On playing Man City in the FA Cup final: "It's about winning the trophy. We have to take the trophy away from someone. We want to win the FA Cup. We know it's really important here. We know if we win it we stop the option for City getting the treble but for us it's about getting another trophy."
