Arsenal will need to come from behind to progress to the semi-finals of the Women's Champions League after losing the first leg of their tie with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Lea Schuller's powerful 39th-minute header gave Bayern the advantage on a frustrating evening for the Gunners.

Jonas Eidevall's side, chasing a first semi-final spot in a decade, came close to an equaliser on several occasions. Schuller was a standout performer, also chipping it wide in the first half.

Bayern's top scorer beat Laura Wienroither at the back post and thumped her header past Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger as the hosts took advantage of their growing pressure in the first half.

Further opportunities fell to England international Georgia Stanway, who struck wide from long range for Bayern, while Arsenal's best chance came when Caitlin Foord curled it on to the post just after half-time.

Australian Foord was Arsenal's biggest threat on the night, testing goalkeeper Maria Luisa Grohs twice later in the second half before Stina Blackstenius' looping header and Leah Williamson's strike were both desperately cleared off the goalline by Bayern.

Arsenal had several appeals for a penalty waved away as Foord's shot in the first half might have hit a hand, Rafaelle Souza's shirt might have been pulled back during Blackstenius' chance and there appeared to be a deliberate pass back to the goalkeeper after Williamson's shot was cleared.

The Gunners have fallen at the quarter-final stage in their last three European campaigns but will hope to avoid the same outcome in the second leg at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, 29 March (kick-off 20:00 BST).

    Bayern Munich 1-0 Arsenal

Bayern win the first leg through Lea Schuller's first-half header. But there will be so much for Jonas Eidevall and his side to be encouraged by as they were the better team in the second half.

The impressive Caitlin Foord hit the foot of the post and both Stina Blackstenius and Leah Williamson had efforts cleared off the line.

But it's 1-0 Bayern, going into the second leg at Emirates Stadium next Wednesday.

An excellent double save from Manuela Zinsberger in a rare Bayern attack in this second half. Substitute Jovana Damnjanovic feeds Maximiliane Rall only for her to be denied by the Arsenal keeper.

Caitlin Foord, with her back to goal, tries to spin and shoot in the same motion but Maximiliane Rall does well to block it.

A change then for the hosts as goalscorer Lea Schuller, who has just needed some medical treatment, goes off and is replaced by Jovana Damnjanovic.

Bayern will be hoping Schuller is OK for the weekend when they play German title rivals Wolfsburg on Saturday before the second leg of this Champions League tie four days later.

  13. OFF THE LINE - AGAINpublished at 74 mins

    Bayern Munich 1-0 Arsenal

Once again Arsenal are inches away from equalising. This time Leah Williamson side-foots the ball goalwards after Bayern fail to clear a corner and goalscorer Lea Schuller is in the right place to get the ball off the line.

The Arsenal players are then furious as goalkeeper Maria-Luisa Grohs picks up a clear backpass from a team-mate, but nothing is given.

Bayern hanging on to this lead.

The winners of this tie will face the winners of the clash between Paris St-Germain and Wolfsburg.

    Bayern Munich 1-0 Arsenal

The Gunners have a free-kick after the impressive Caitlin Foord is bundled to the ground by Maximiliane Rall and Frida Maanum's delivery causes loads of problems.

Rafaelle Souza has an effort blocked on the line, Arsenal come again and Stina Blackstenius is inches away from making it 1-1. Her header beats the Bayern goalkeeper but Japanese defender Saki Kumagai, at full stretch, does incredibly to get her foot to the ball and clear it off the line.

Jonas Eidevall wants a penalty for a shirt pull on Souza but doesn't get it and Bayern, somehow, survive.
