Liverpool maintained the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City as they survived an early scare to come from behind and win at Aston Villa.

Jurgen Klopp's side suffered a shock after only three minutes when Douglas Luiz bundled home after Liverpool keeper Alisson failed to hold his header.

Liverpool were on terms within three minutes when Joel Matip scored following a goalmouth scramble and the sides then exchanged chances before Sadio Mane put the visitors ahead with a superb angled header from Luis Diaz's cross in the 65th minute.

The win means Liverpool now lie second only on goal difference before City's visit to Wolves on Wednesday.

Former Liverpool striker Danny Ings wasted opportunities to equalise and inflict a blow to his old club's hopes of winning a historic quadruple - although the Reds did suffer an injury setback when influential midfielder Fabinho went off in the first half with a hamstring problem that must make him doubtful for Saturday's FA Cup final against Chelsea.

  3. Mane is a 'machine' - Klopppublished at 22:53 BST 10 May 2022

    Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a massive result and a massive performance. After the games we have played and not a good start, we needed time to adapt, but made a very good response to going 1-0 down.

"We cannot do more than winning. "I am pretty sure that a lot of people again thought this could be a struggle for us and how the boys sorted that is absolutely outstanding. "Next we have the cup final on Saturday, and we will be ready."

On an offside in the build-up to the opening goal: "If you think I only speak about these things when we lose, this is a problem which needs solving. It was an obvious offside situation but was just played on and we were under pressure at that moment. VAR today was not important (in the final outcome), but in general we could really think about how we could solve that.

On Fabinho: "He felt something, which is a big blow for us. Hopefully it is not that bad, but we don't know."

On Sadio Mane: "He's a machine, I told him after the game. He is a massive player. His physicality is brutal. He is a mix of technique, desire and physicality when at the moment everyone has a few yards in the legs. You can see it with him to be honest. Top goal, he is just a fantastic world-class player."

  5. 'Frustrated with the result'published at 22:45 BST 10 May 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard speaking to Sky Sports: "In terms of commitment, heart and application I cannot ask for anymore and at times we showed quality as well.

"Disappointed in terms of the goals we conceded but we will look at that. In terms of what we brought to the game with and without the ball I can't ask for anymore.

"We want to be bold and ambitious. The other option is to wait and you can still lose that way and you will have more regrets. We have good players and if we are calculated about it we can hurt teams but we have to cut moments out and need to be better. In summary we are disappointed with the goals and frustrated with the result.

"We are a lot more dangerous with two number nines. At times we had to suffer. You are never going to play Liverpool off the pitch, they are high-level opposition and have a top manager but for large parts of the game we were in the ascendancy and we showed a lot of ambition. We had a lot of chances and Liverpool were never comfortable."

On playing to Manchester City on the final day: "We will wait and see what situation we are in at the end of the season but we have a purpose to try and finish as high as we can. We want to push for the top 10 and it has to be about us. Let's hope we can put ourselves in a good place going to City."

  7. 'It was a massive performance'published at 22:35 BST 10 May 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BBC Sport: "I don't think it is possible to win easy. They are a high-quality side. All the things they did put us under pressure.

"We have our situation and if you want to win an away game you have to open up spaces. They did really well and we needed time to get in the game and before we got in the game it was 1-1.

"I could not be more proud. It was a massive performance in the middle of May."

On Fabinho: "I think he will [be OK, for the FA Cup final] but I do not know. We have to have a further assessment."

On Sadio Mane's winning goal: "The whole situation was class. It was top class. Luis crossing in a moment when nobody expected it apart from Sadio.

"We did not have time to train and work on it and I am happy in this moment he pretended to shoot and crossed. It is difficult for the goalie and all of a sudden he puts his head there and it is nice and soft but it was a goal."

  8. 'Not our night'published at 22:29 BST 10 May 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

For Villa, they stay 11th but could still get a top-half finish as they aim for their best position since coming ninth in 2010-11 or sixth a season earlier.

    FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool forward Sadio Mane speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a good cross from Diaz, I was in the box and in this moment I just need to put it in the net and even without power I usually score.

"We know each other well from training every day. When he got the ball I knew he was going to cross so I was just going to be ready for it.

"When we won trophies I was more happier. I am just trying to enjoy every moment and try to score. It is all about the team and the boys make it easy for me."

  11. Henderson praises 'incredible' Liverpoolpublished at 22:18 BST 10 May 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson speaking to Sky Sports: "The boys have been incredible for a long period of time and tonight was no different. We knew it would be a tough game coming here against a good team and we knew there would be tough moments but it is about digging in, keeping going and finding a way to win and the boys were incredible again tonight and we got the three points.

"It was a bit frantic and as the game went on I felt we did that [got more control], scored a couple of goals and overall it was a good performance.

"Sadio Mane's performances have always been incredible. The amount of work he does for the team off the ball, defending at the end and but he has the quality in and around the box. It was an incredible finish and he gets us the three points.

"It was always going to be tough and we have to keep going. We're in the same position as we were before the game. It was a big game and another three points. We concentrate on what we need to do. It is another big game at the weekend, the FA Cup final and we have to recover for that. It is out of our control [in the Premier League], we do not need to waste energy on that."

  14. Will Fabinho be fit for the cup final?published at 22:11 BST 10 May 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

For a few days at least, Liverpool can now focus on the FA Cup as they look to seal the second leg of a potential quadruple.

It's Chelsea on Saturday in the cup final at Wembley, a repeat of the Carabao Cup final, which the Reds won on penalties in February after a horror spot-kick from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

One concern for Liverpool will be the availability of midfielder Fabinho as he went off holding his left hamstring.

  15. Some post-match statspublished at 22:08 BST 10 May 2022

    FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool

    • Liverpool have now scored 43 away goals in the Premier League this season, only managing more in a league campaign once before, in 2013-14 (48) when they finished second in the top-flight behind Manchester City.
    • Liverpool have won 14 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, a joint-high figure in 2021-22 along with Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham.
  16. Still to comepublished at 22:05 BST 10 May 2022

Liverpool then play Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on 17 May (19:45 BST), before both play at 16:00 BST on the final day of the season - 22 May.

Liverpool face Wolves at Anfield with City at home to Villa, with the Reds hoping club legend Steven Gerrard can do them a massive favour.

Tony: A gritty win for the Redmen but that’s all that’s required at this time of the season! The dream of four is still alive!

Keith: Talking about City's goal difference - well a loss, any loss eats into that so why would Liverpool go chasing goals at this stage? Wins are all that matter now for Liverpool to keep some pressure on.
