  3. 'No imminent return for injured players'published at 22:42 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Leicester City

More from Brendan Rodgers to Amazon Prime: "I felt this was a game we could play the back four because the wingers come inside and play a different way to Manchester City. It's a different idea for the game.

"Especially over this season we just haven't been good enough on set-pieces. We had to be much better. But we went back a little bit old school and went man-to-man and had players on the posts. They defended it really strongly. When we had to block and intercept they did that very well."

On injured players: "They are all still a little bit away. That's a challenge in itself. We always had players who come in and do their very best. There's no imminent return. The boys in the African Cup of Nations go after the weekend's game. It's just one of those periods. It's been unfortunate for us. We just have to get on with it and do the best we can."

  4. 'You write your own story'published at 22:38 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Leicester City

More from Brendan Rodgers to Amazon Prime: "I said after the Manchester City game that we had played well going forward. But of course with all the players missing it's been a challenge for us structurely.

"We knew this game that the headlines were probably already written. You write your own story in football and we said that to the players before to make a big effort and give big energy.

"We felt with how Liverpool play their full-backs are really important so playing the diamond it allows you to be 2v2 on the centre-backs. Our number 10 has to then fill in - which is James Maddison. They are so good and they move the ball so fast so you have to block the spaces if you can. Tactically, they were very good in the game.

"If you play a diamond, especially against a big team, they can switch it over to the sides. I felt after an hour we could bring on Ademola to give us the speed and quality. We then went to a 4-3-3 to give us that width and fill the sides when we were defending."

  5. 'Lost for words'published at 22:35 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Leicester City

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers to Amazon Prime: "When you play against the two teams we have played, it was going to be a huge test of our mentality and spirit and physicality.

"There's probably not a team more physical in the league than Liverpool so to come through with a clean sheet and in the way we played showed our resilience.

"I am lost for words really as it was such a heroic performance in the context of the two games."

Huge credit to the Foxes. We are down to bear bones but still have quality players and manager and never give up. Full marks to Liverpool comments in defeat. Class.

  8. Messages from the Everton kitmanpublished at 22:26 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Leicester City

Leicester City goalscorer Ademola Lookman: "It's a very important three points for us and a big performance as a team as well.

"I'm not sure if that's what [Brendan Rodgers] planned but for me it was to come on and help the team. We did that and we got the three points.

"I think I received the ball and did something which was out of the ordinary a little when I got in the box. I took the shot early and managed to get it past the goalkeeper.

"It was just to show our character. The manager talks a lot about character and we showed a lot tonight to get the three points to show our defensive and offensive qualities."

Whether he will make his loan move permanent: "I'm here and I'm at Leicester. It's about being in the moment, staying in the moment and not thinking about the future. I need to keep working hard every single day."

On receiving messages from former Everton team-mates: "Yeah, definitely. Especially from the kitman from Everton! I'm glad today."

  9. 'It didn't look like us'published at 22:24 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Maybe if I watch the game back, I’ll see that we were just unlucky. I’m not sure that’ll be my analysis. I didn’t like our performance, to be honest. We played a very strange game. We had chances – they had one shot on goal and that’s fine.

"The reason for the defeat is clear. They had to play two days ago, they had to fight through this really intense period and they did it really well. If we had played like we’re able to play, I think we’d have still been the winner. But we didn’t do enough to beat Leicester so they deserved to win.

"There were too many performances below normal level. My job is to figure these kind of things out before the game. Who is in shape and all these kind of things.

"So often these boys gave me the opportunity to say ‘wow, what a game!’ - tonight it’s ‘wow!’ but in completely the other way. It didn’t look good. It didn’t look like us, and that’s obviously the one thing we have to think about and change immediately."

Di B: Absolutely not happy with that result. Too many wasted chances against a makeshift Leicester back four. City will be nine points clear by the end of tomorrow which can be reduced to six, but everyone bar Matip & Tsimikas have to do better than they did tonight.

  12. 'An absolutely heroic performance'published at 22:16 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Leicester City

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers to BBC MOTD: "It is so hard to put it into words. To play Manchester City and Liverpool within 48 hours... It's an absolutely heroic performance. We knew we'd have to defend well at times but we knew we could play football as well. An amazing result for us with everything we're going through against one of the best teams in the world.

"There's no doubt [it is one of the biggest wins of the season]. The likes of Daniel Amartey has been off with Covid and one day back in training plays two games. Luke Thomas a young lad playing lots of games. I'm pretty sure the headlines were written before the game. The beauty of the game is it's a chance for the players to write their own headlines and they did that.

"We've had some great wins, picked up some great titles but one thing that has never fallen with this team is the spirit. We've played poorly at times but we've never stopped fighting and we saw that there today.

"Every game you have a plan. We played with a diamond structure to make the middle of the pitch compact. You then know you have to change the system so we went to 4-3-3 and Ademola Lookman comes on to get the goal.

"Kasper Schmeichel's a top goalkeeper, one of the best in Europe. It's what Kasper is renowned for. When we needed him, he was there. We needed a push. We needed the supporters. An incredible atmosphere."

  13. 'We played a really bad game'published at 22:14 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Definitely, it was well deserved [for Leicester]. It was a very strange game. We were just not good enough. We still had enough chances. What we did with the balls was just not right. We played a really bad game, so it was well deserved.

"Our decision-making [was poor], maybe a little bit of luck [was missing]. That’s how it is. We should have had more of those moments. We had enough to get the win, but if you lose you need more of them.

"I think we started OK, then we completely lost our rhythm and didn’t get it back. From then we forced it, so there’s nothing else to say. The circumstances too – Leicester played two days ago, they deserve it, absolutely.

"You could see it coming a little bit. They had one shot on target. They didn’t have plenty of chances. We should have defended better. We do that usually, why we didn’t do it today is hard to explain. There were so many performances before normal level, there’s no explanation.

"It’s a big gap [to City]. In this moment it is not my problem. If we play our normal football, Liverpool football, we have the chance to win more football games.

"A defeat is a defeat. We have to learn and we will. The first thing is not to do it ever again like this. We lost our rhythm and weren’t calm enough to get it back. That’s our fault."

  16. 'A thoroughly enjoyable win'published at 22:08 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Leicester City

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, speaking to Amazon Prime: "It’s an important win, a very important win. To go out in the second half against [Manchester] City the way we did, then put in a performance like that with tired legs and tired minds... It’s a credit to the team.

"We want to try and have the ball but in periods against teams like City and Liverpool, there are going to be periods where you don’t have the ball. You have to have that threat on the counter-attack.

"It’s a thoroughly enjoyable win. We just have to rest up and move on. The key for us is consistency, we haven’t found it. We’re working so hard on every aspect of our game. We got that little bit of luck today, hopefully that can kick-start us."

On whether he had studied Mo Salah's penalties: "Not at all. I had a feeling, I went with it. The last penalty I saved here at the King Power they scored on the rebound. You need that bit of luck at times. We didn’t have it against City, we had it today."

  17. 'We were poor in the last third'published at 22:06 GMT 28 December 2021

    FT: Leicester 1-0 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk: "I think they deserved the win but that was obviously also down to us. I think we were poor in the last third. A lot of crosses they defended well. Overall, not a good performance. They didn't create much but looked dangerous on the break which they are good at. Credit to them. We have to look at ourselves and improve, which we will do. It's part of football.

"We will keep trying until the very end. We created good chances but unfortunately today wasn't the day it went in the back of the net. Penalty miss, which happens. But it's disappointing.

"Obviously you don't want to concede at all. We let [Ademola Lookman] get into space and unfortunately the goal went in. But we had moments we reacted and created chances to do better. You have to give them credit as well.

"What can we say? We're in December. The season is so, so long. Anything can happen. You have seen it with Covid and injuries - lots of things can change. There's no point looking at [Manchester City] or Chelsea or the other teams around us. We should look at our performance today and improve. We all wanted to do better. That's a fact. We weren't good enough and they deserved the win."

Liverpool have been poor tonight. Salah's penalty and Mane's one-on-one misses aside, we've not created many clear-cut chances. The defending from Trent and Henderson, letting Lookman run past them from midfield was appalling; and this final midfield line-up of Milner, Keita and Firmino is so weak, flimsy and lacking in quality. A bad night indeed. Back to normal against Chelsea, hopefully.
