  2. 'The manager wasn't pleased'published at 19:00 GMT 31 October 2021

FT: Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham scorer Ben Johnson, speaking to MOTD: "We took our chances and really enjoyed it out there even though there were sloppy periods.

"We came out on the other side. The gaffer wasn't best pleased at half-time. The standards we set last season and where we want to go this season, it wasn't good enough."

  3. 'The red card was wrong'published at 19:00 GMT 31 October 2021

    Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The red card was the wrong decision; the referee saw it in real time. I asked him why and he said because he was in on goal and the ball was moving towards the goal. Clearly, it wasn't. After that, the sending off galvanised us because we played well for 20 minutes after that.

"Kourtney Hause could have been sent off but he wasn't. They decided that wasn't a red.

"The players showed character; they pressed when they could and made it difficult. Ollie (Watkins) had a chance when he hit the bar, and the third goal killed the contest.

"We lacked intensity in the first 15 minutes; they scored a poor goal when we should have doubled up on Johnson when he cut inside and should have saved the second goal. The response was good afterwards, the crowd could have got back into the game."

  4. 'Two big talking points'published at 19:00 GMT 31 October 2021

    Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith to BBC Sport: "It wasn’t a red card. The referee saw a still and in full time and thought the ball was going towards the goal. It amazes me, it wasn’t going towards the goal. And Ashley Young was covering.

"That staggers me. It’s not a red card. I thought we were all right with 10 men. We gave as good as we got."

On Marvelous Nakamba having to go off briefly before West Ham's third: "I don’t understand the rule - the player gets booked [for fouling him] and he has to go off the pitch. We had eight outfield players on the pitch when they scored [for 3-1].

"It was a poor start. He’s cut inside for the opening goal. Leon jumps over it and it unsights our keeper. We didn’t start well but we grew into the game. We scored a good goal and created chances. It was a poor second goal, he went though bodies and has knobbled it far corner. Poor goal to concede.

"There were two big talking points. We have got eight outfield players on the pitch for the third goal. The rules of the game say if he has been fouled and the other player was cautioned, he can stay on the pitch. He was told to come off.

"We’ve got two or three players who have soft tissue injuries and some Covid related illnesses.

"Perceptions change all the time. We can’t control that. I believe in this squad. We didn’t deserve a 4-1 defeat. The squad is good enough to turn this round. We need to, we don’t want it to fester."

  5. 'Performances can be better'published at 18:57 GMT 31 October 2021

FT: Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to MOTD: "I'm thrilled with the result. The performance perhaps could have been better. I've not seen either incident [Ezri Konsa red card and Pablo Fornals challenge].

"The red card obviously had a big impact on the game. Overall I thought we had long periods of good control without making the most of it.

"We haven't got an out and out centre forward. Michail Antonio's contribution is always big for us.

"I'm more interested in performances. We did enough today but I think the performance can be better. What the players have done so far has been fantastic. We have to keep it going."

  6. Postpublished at 18:55 GMT 31 October 2021

    Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

  7. Postpublished at 18:51 GMT 31 October 2021

FT: Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's been a great week. But you know what happens in football. It can turn around and bite you.

"We have another game on Thursday. I don't want West Ham to become that flaky inconsistent team a lot of people remember them as.

"Getting four goals [pleased me most], the resilience we showed at different times of game and save Lukasz at 2-1. It's a good sign we can come here a be a little bit disappointed with the way we played and get a result."

  8. 'We're over the moon'published at 18:46 GMT 31 October 2021

    Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice to Sky Sports: "It's a special group at the minute, a special environment. We wake up looking forward to training. Every game, we've been in it until the end. It's a special place to play. We’re over the moon.

"I can definitely add [goals] to my game, I have four this season. It doesn’t get better with the feeling of scoring a goal. I really love playing away, you are in someone else’s stadium and get the away fans.

"We won 4-1 but we were so sloppy in the second half. We gave the ball away so much. The manager won’t be happy. There were times we could have countered and gave it away.

"We are joint third. The big question people asked before the season was whether we could do it again. We’ve found out we can. But still a lot more games to go. This is the level, the standard. We can’t drop if we want to be a big team."

  9. 'Sore result to take'published at 18:44 GMT 31 October 2021

FT: Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's a hard one to take. We probably didn't deserve to go in at the break losing. It's a sloppy goal which seems to be a theme of the last few weeks. It's a sore one to take.

"Once we went down to 10 men we showed a bit of desire. We showed bits of quality in the first half."

On Pablo Fornals' challenge: "It looked dangerous. They probably checked it. VAR decisions the past few weeks have gone against us."

    Norwich 1-2 Leeds

    Chris Sutton
Former Norwich striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Norwich were bad today; they don't look like scoring from open play. We all know about Norwich's model, but if Norwich are going to sack Daniel Farke, they have to sack him soon. If this goes on much longer, they will be doomed but Farke has proven he can get them back up. He's done it before.

    Aston Villa 1-4 West Ham

    Clinton Morrison

It wouldn't be a massive surprise if they beat Liverpool; they are good at home. But Liverpool are a great team and they've got some massive players - Salah, Mane, Firmino - it will be tough but West Ham will go into that game full of confidence.
