  2. 'This was like a bonus game'published at 20:23 GMT 10 March 2021

    FT: an City 5-2 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to BBC Sport: "We showed a very brave performance in the first half. I'm not disappointed about the performance. There must be a reason why you are 21-games winning in a row and one of the best teams in the world.

"We have showed we can play against such a team. I would have been more unhappy if we hadn't been brave.

"Every weekend is tough for us. This was more a bonus game for us but we've got games now where we have to take points.

"I know what I am working with. We will go on. There are enough opportunities and tough fixtures coming up. Hopefully we are prepared."

  3. 'You can't play football like Southampton do'published at 20:19 GMT 10 March 2021

    FT: Man City 5-2 Southampton

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Southampton's defenders don't get the best protection, but they ball watch a lot. It is basics. If you look at the goals tonight, Ryan Bertrand is ball watching, and at this level of football you've got to be switched on. In possession they are a very good side, good on the eye, but when they haven't got the ball you can see sides getting through them and getting shots and chances. You can't play football like that.

    FT: Man City 5-2 Southampton

    Southampton

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think we played quite well I must say even though we conceded five goals. We made it a bit too easy. We were very brave with the ball at times. It's the final quality that is missing.

"This game I enjoyed more than if we had sit back for 90 minutes. This is our way and this is what I like to see. When you are committed and active you win a lot of balls against this team. Although we didn't get points we're not so disappointed.

"I'm a big fan of Pep Guardiola's football. There isn't a better coach out there. We have made a big development with our side within our limits."

  5. 'It's just a matter of time'published at 20:12 GMT 10 March 2021

    FT: Man City 5-2 Southampton

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

You've got to give Man City credit - they've come from nowhere, and gone on that run. It is just a matter of time. It is great experience for Manchester United to get up alongside them, and the way that Chelsea are going I expect them to be big contenders next year."

Alex at 1947. You have no idea what you are talking about. I - and legions of others - have been loyal City supporters for half a century thru thick and thin and good times and bad. That we have enjoyed some success in the last 10 years is testament to a fantastic club with a loyal and dedicated fan base, superb players and excellent managers.

  7. 'Incredible penalty was not given'published at 20:11 GMT 10 March 2021

    FT: Man City 5-2 Southampton

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Sport: "We won because of the quality of the players we had on the pitch.

"It is just incredible that penalty was not given. One day they are going to explain why. I do not understand it. It's incredible that in four-and-a-half-years we have won everything ourselves. No-one has given us anything.

"It's important for Kevin and Riyad to score goals. We need them. Now it's rest and then Fulham. It's one game at a time. There are nine games left. Games like today are so difficult and so tough."

  8. 'Maybe one day they will explain the rules'published at 20:06 GMT 10 March 2021

    FT: Man City 5-2 Southampton

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "They made us suffer at times. In general it was good. Another victory and we move on to Fulham. Southampton put a lot of players in the middle and made it very hard for us.

"They expose a lot which allowed us to counter. The quality of our players won the game - Riyad, Phil and Kevin. I don't understand the hands from Arsenal against Fulham. Another example is the penalty today. Maybe one day they will explain the rules.

"But we won so we're happy. Fulham is next.

  9. 'Difficult to win when you can't defend'published at 20:01 GMT 10 March 2021

    FT: Man City 5-2 Southampton

    Chris Waddle

Fair play to Southampton - they've given it a go, but Manchester City have just capitalised on their errors. It is very difficult to win games when you can't defend.

    FT: Man City 5-2 Southampton

    Manchester City

Manchester City's Phil Foden, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was quite strange at times. Southampton started really well and made it hard for us. It was really important to get back on track. Fair play to Southampton, I thought they gave it a really good try. I've been scoring a lot this season so to get a couple of assists is pleasing.

"It was important to get back to winning ways. I thought we rolled our sleeves up well."

On the penalty that was not awarded: "I'm an honest guy and I never like to dive, 100% I thought it was a penalty."

We've seen Man City probably score two goals playing unbelievable football, but you wouldn't say tonight has been an outstanding display. At times, when you watch them you think 'how good are they', but they've done the job without playing outstanding footballer.

For all Man City's success and wealth (just look at that squad!) their club lacks the most important thing, a soul. People may laugh but the reason other clubs like Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal amongst others come through hardships is because of a real fan base that helps to push the club on coupled with genuine principles that these clubs live by. Money is part of the modern game but aside from this what do City have? A belief in the academy? Loyalty from players? Or fans? I don't think so. Would Pep stick around if they were still at Maine Road without the wealth? They can't even fill their own stadium at the best if times. Yes they'll win the league but they won't win the hearts of football fans.
