More from Steve Bruce, speaking to Sky Sports: "We are halfway. We have been stuck on 19 points for the past six games I think. We are in a difficult period but I have seen enough of the team to try and finish where we did last year or even above it.

"We are in the Premier League and we all know what it is. When we are on a run like we are you come under the pump as a result. I am not alone, there is a lot in that situation. It is the Premier League and it is how you handle it.

"I have been criticised for everything. I don't necessarily agree with it. We are not going to be entertaining and open because if we go that way I don't think we will have enough."

  4. Postpublished at 22:29 GMT 23 January 2021

Well I wasn't expecting that as a top line from Steve Bruce to be honest. His side had 40% of the ball and their only shot on target was in the fourth minute and wasn't even a real chance.

  5. 'I've seen enough to be encouraged'published at 22:28 GMT 23 January 2021

Newcastle manager Steve Bruce, speaking to Sky Sports: "Unfortunately we've gifted them a goal and after that it was difficult. There were large parts of it I was pleased about. Certainly the addition of Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser. I have seen enough to be encouraged. Yes we have to accept defeat but there was enough there to work on.

"That is always the difficult part of the Premier League and we understand that, we have found it difficult to score a goal but I was encouraged, especially when those two got on the pitch.

"I have seen enough in the squad, having them two back and then a couple more. we are not as injury ravaged. The big players in the team who can score and create a goal for us are getting back.

"We are not alone, there are other teams in difficult runs, it is how we handle it. Keep working hard and that is the only way you will change it."

  8. New signing on the way?published at 22:17 GMT 23 January 2021

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith tells Sky Sports: "I thought we were good especially in the first half. We overplayed a little in the second half and could have scored a couple more.

"Really pleased for Ollie Watkins, it always weighs on forwards' minds and it was nice to get an early goal for himself. Really pleased, solid performance at 2-0 and another clean sheet at home.

"We have had three tough away games and we only got one point, there were some debatable decisions in the Manchester games but today we did well.

"I have Jack Grealish on four yellow cards and last couple of days he has had a tight hamstring. When you feel the game is done you can take him off. Ross Barkley has had eight weeks out but both showed their qualities."

On potential signings: "I have not spoken to our sporting director and there is obviously an inbound player and hopefully that is done soon."

Another good landmark for the Villa tonight - Villa (W9-D2-L6) have equalled their total number of Premier League victories in the entire 2019-20 season (W9-D8-L21).

Why all the focus on how poor Newcastle are? Let’s talk about how amazing Villa and Deano’s boys are. Who is playing better football than us this season I ask? UTV

    Jordan, Streetly

Jamie Carragher just summed it up on TV. Becoming a nothing club and it’s boring. In 42 years since my first live game I have never felt do disinterested in the Toon. Dreadful.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins tells Sky Sports: "I feel like it has been a long time coming i have been getting into the right areas, it has been frustrating.

"As a striker you always want to score goals, I have been unlucky and thankfully it went in today. I kept my eye on the ball and the next thing I knew it was in the back of the net.

"We have been unlucky, played against a few good sides but we are back to winning ways. Second half we were sloppy and if we concentrated a little bit more we could have punished them for three or four.

"The goals will always come if I keep going in the box, it came off a defender's shin tonight and fell for me."

Stuart: "Who could they get to replace me?" Steve Bruce, just before Villa sacked him. Dean Smith, mate. Who got us up, kept us up and put us a long way ahead of you while playing football that doesn't make our eyes bleed

Marc Richards: I will give Bruce credit, he is consistently getting worse and worse performances out of this team. That in itself is pretty impressive. It’s hard to judge who is worse out of Carver, McClaren and Bruce in terms of watching #nufc, external play

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle and England winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's about results, if you play well, it's entertaining and you get results that's the best thing in the world but Steve Bruce needs a couple of wins quickly. That would give him a gap to the bottom three but he needs to find a formula.

They are not creating anything, you've got no chance to win a football match. I can't see anybody scoring a goal.

    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

    Chris Waddle

Very comfortable, Villa were by far the better side. You have to question Steve Bruce's tactics, I like him and he's a good guy. He inherited a team based on counter attacking and he has found it hard to change, now he is on about changing but he needs to play 4-4-2 and he needs legs. That's the only way out, I hope he keeps his job.

Villa are team on the up, a lot of young talent, they are gelling very well and they have so many players who can hurt you.

It was easy for Villa to be honest. A fair few Newcastle players look shattered by that.

  20. GREAT SAVE!published at 21:53 GMT 23 January 2021

    Aston Villa 2-0 Newcastle

A wonderful save to deny Trezeguet! Villa break down their left again, loads of space this time. There's half a shout for a penalty in the middle but it runs to Trezeguet who puts it in the corner - and Darlow makes a wonderful tip around.
