  • Glentoran 2-1 Warrenpoint Town (Res)

  1. Glens back on top after long waitpublished at 17:55 GMT 11 January 2020

September 2013 was the last time Glentoran had topped the Irish Premiership - but they changed all that today with a comeback win over bottom side Warrenpoint Town.

Their 13-game unbeaten league run was under threat as they trailed to an Alan O'Sullivan goal, but a straight red card for Point keeper Mark Byrne turned the tide in the east Belfast side's favour.

Robbie McDaid equalised and Hrvoje Plum scored the winner with a wonder free-kick to send the Glens top of the table, ahead of Cliftonville by virtue of goals scored.

There was also drama in Lurgan as Glenavon came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Institute.

The Irish Premiership action continues when Cliftonville host Linfield on Monday night - but the Glens are top at least until then.

    See you next week.

It feels like two points dropped - I'm disappointed. The manager said we would have taken a point before the game, but we have to take the positives and it's a good point. It's tight at the bottom, we've shown that we can take points off the top teams. We've gotten back to basics in training and hopefully we can kick from here.

  3. It was never a red card - Graypublished at 17:32 GMT 11 January 2020

Mark Byrne should not have been sent off. It was not a red card. Referees have to be 100% sure if they are going to give big decisions like that. Danny Wallace clears the ball before there is contact between our keeper and Jonny Frazer, so while it might have been a free-kick, it was definitely not a red card.

  4. This season has hurt me - Hamiltonpublished at 17:26 GMT 11 January 2020

    Quote Message

We're really disappointed with the result. We've conceded three chances and I said to the boys, you could have went out to the park to watch the kids playing and you wouldn't have seen chances given away like we gave away today. To be fair to Institute, they punished us, and we did show character to come back from two goals down. But we also had a lot of chances to kill the game off and, at both ends of the pitch, we're not where we wanted to be and that's been the story of the season. That's why we've brought in four, five players and we're still looking. The table doesn't lie and we're not where we want to be - we need to improve. It's been a different season for me, we don't have European football to play for and it's hurting - I make no bones about that. I'm responsible for picking the team and getting it right.

    Gary Hamilton, Glenavon manager

  5. We've a chance of winning the league - McDermottpublished at 17:19 GMT 11 January 2020

    Glentoran 2-1 Warrenpoint Town

    Quote Message

We know we have a chance of winning the league. We want to stay in touch with the group of teams at the top of the table and we know we have to battle hard top do that. Everywhere we go teams want to beat us but that has always been the case for Glentoran, whether the team has been weak or strong, and the players in our dressing room are used to the pressure.

  6. FULL-TIMEpublished at 16:54 GMT 11 January 2020

    Glentoran 2-1 Warrenpoint Town

It will be party time in east Belfast tonight as Glentoran come back from a goal down to beat Warrenpoint 2-1 and go top of the league table.

An Alan O'Sullivan goal gave the visitors an unlikely lead at the Oval but it all went wrong for them when young keeper Mark Byrne was shown a straight red card.

Robbie McDaid equalised almost immediately and Hrvoje Plum won it with another wonder free-kick late on.

It takes the Glens ahead of Cliftonville at the top by virtue of more goals scored.

A point apiece after an entertaining clash at Mourneview.

Glenavon were certainly the better side over the 90 minutes and, while they will be disappointed with having spurned a few chances in the first half, they showed great resolve to haul themselves back from two goals down to snatch a point.

    Glentoran 2-1 Warrenpoint Town

It's not a position they've been used to in recent years, but Glentoran are heading to the top of the Irish Premiership with just a few moments of this game left.

They will be level on points with Cliftonville and level on goal difference, but the Glens will be ahead as they have scored more goals.

Hrvoje Plum puts the Glens ahead with a fantastic free-kick.

It was yet another one for the ever-growing Plum highlights reel as he showed great technique to get the ball over the wall and into the top corner.

It was sub keeper Turker who rushed off his line and committed the foul for the free-kick.

    Sublime stuff.
