A hard defeat for Boston to take having given it a great go in the second half.

Still a good night for the final cup tie at York Street.

A new ground to come for Boston and promotion to fight for in National League North.

But it's Rochdale who go through and that's still a great third-round tie to look out for against Newcastle in January.

Boston United manager Craig Elliott told BT Sport:

"It was a good game and I'm extremely proud of the players.

"A bounce of a ball didn't go for us, we had a lot of balls around the box and we just needed something to go for us.

"I thought we did enough to take it to extra time."

What a time for Boston to suffer their first home defeat of the season.

Such a shame for the National League North side but they contributed to a proper cup tie.

Ultimately, their two major errors - the first a stinker at any level - have cost them.

Rochdale's Aaron Wilbraham told BT Sport:

"It was two tough tests and the boys defended resolutely and saw the game out in the end.

"We didn't play very well in the first game and we knew tonight was going to be tougher.

"Everyone wants to draw a Premier League team and we’ll look forward to playing Newcastle now."

And Rochdale have done it!

They see out injury time very comfortably and survive a really tricky night in Lincolnshire.

Two mistakes in either half gifted them their goals and it's they who go through to play Newcastle in round three.

The Dale are almost there but Boston have the ball.

Not for long though - a sliced cross runs away from danger.

All hands to the pump now for Rochdale.

Pierce Bird on the left with a good cross for Boston but yet again Robert Sanchez showing really good hands.

Five added minutes for the National League North club to keep themselves in the FA Cup.

Clumsy challenge from Aaron Morley and Boston have a free-kick 25 yards from goal on the right.

Floated up towards the far post and it gives Robert Sanchez the chance to claim well.

It's an awkward angle for the goalkeeper but Robert Sanchez is there for Rochdale.

What do Boston have now?

They try to get forward. Alex Whittle down the left but his cross is poor and easily cleared at the near post.

Suddenly Boston are chasing the game.

Jonathan Wafula down the right wins a corner.

But he's now being brought off and Jake Wright replaces him.

Dale's Stephen Dooley is brought down by Jay Rollins.

It's a lazy tackle as Dooley gets to the ball first just inside the area.

Rollins clearly brings him down.

It's getting a bit nervy on either side.

One mistake ends the dream of playing Newcastle in round three.

Boston go straight up the other end and win a free-kick 20 yards out on the left-side of the area.

It's floated up towards the far post but headed harmlessly over.

Strong play up the right for Rochdale and Stephen Dooley is played into the area.

He slides it into Matt Done who gets a left toe to it but at close range, Peter Crook saves for Boston.
