Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to Match of the Day: “The gap between us and the top teams isn’t that big - we've shown that in the last few games.

"The players aren’t allowing themselves to become disheartened. The attitude throughout was excellent today. In the last 20 or 30 minutes we were laying siege to the Tottenham goal. They will realise that it was quite a fortunate win.

"We go home very dejected because once again we have very little to show for our efforts."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino speaking to Match of the Day: "The win is so important. It finishes a very tough period for us. It’s been a massive effort from the players and staff. Maybe the performance wasn’t the best, but the belief and fight was there. I'm so happy for that.

"The most important thing is to trust in our squad and our coaching staff. I think it was fantastic to see today. Foyth conceded two penalties last weekend and scored the winning goal. It’s fantastic. We need to keep fighting and making sure we perform well.

"This type of game is crucial in the battle for the top four. This is one of the toughest stadiums to play in. The three points are massive."

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to BT Sport: "It was a really good effort by our players. We held our own for large parts of the game and towards the end we were close to getting the equaliser we deserved.

"You don’t have to be a football man to know the game is won in both penalty areas. The game is about goals. If you aren’t scoring them you’re going to have to be very good at the other end to make sure you don’t concede any.

"I don’t think Tottenham created that many chances, but they defended very well just like we did."

“It was a very competitive game. It was an even game and it was tough. Before the game we were talking a lot about how difficult it is to play here.

"I'm so pleased because the team fought well under difficult circumstances and got the three points.

"It’s fantastic for Foyth. His performance today was fantastic. He played so well. He needs to learn and keep improving but he is a very good prospect for us."

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey: "They didn’t cause us that many problems but they got the winner. At this level if you don’t take your opportunities they’ll punish you in every way.

"It’s been a terrible run for us at the moment – we’re playing a lot of the big boys. We need to do better when we return from international duty.

"We’ve got some fantastic players at the club. Hopefully our luck will change."

"You need to have a back four who are in top form, and that’s exactly what we’ve got at the moment.

"Juan deserves a lot of credit. It says a lot about his character after conceding those two penalties at Wolves. He works hard every day in training and he’s come in today and got the winner.

"Everyone’s fighting for their place here. Everyone’s ready to come in and perform."

Tottenham defender Juan Foyth speaking to BT Sport:

"The most important thing is we played well. The first half was difficult but the most important thing is we win.

"I think the two penalties I conceded against Wolves, I have to learn from. I've worked in training but these two penalties helped me with experience."

The Eagles gave everything in the closing stages and perhaps should have salvaged a point with that Sorloth chance, but Spurs could easily have doubled their lead on the counterattack late on.

The win lifts Tottenham level on points with Liverpool and Chelsea.
