Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to Match of the Day: "It wasn't our best performance but it was obviously good enough. It is quite difficult to create chances against a good, organised side like Brighton.

"We had chances. It was a good game. In the second half, if you don't decide the game, it is the oldest law of football... Brighton is too good and when they made some changes, we lost the plot a little and gave the ball away in absolutely the wrong moments!

"We gave a few percentages back and they nearly used it but for the brilliance of Alisson. The set-pieces they had were always dangerous but we defended them so I'm really fine.

"It is a good day for us because we won this game and it is still special for a Premier League game."

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk: "It was a tough game but we were full of confidence from last week. We needed to make sure we were ready for the battle. We needed to play our best game so we are just happy that we won.

"We did it all together. You saw today how important our pressing from the front is. Credit to everyone. We are not doing it alone at the back. Everyone is doing their bit. It is always important to make crucial saves."

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Chris Hughton speaking to BT Sport: "There was stuff to be proud of but disappointed as well. I thought over the 90 minutes they would have chances but I thought we did too.

"They made changes towards the end of the game to try and stay in it. We finished really strong and won't get a better opportunity.

"At 1-0 down at half-time most people expected Liverpool to push on but we got stronger as the game went on. We were good on the ball and had some really good moments.

"It was a poor goal. You try and move on as quick as possible. The team rallied around. These things happen. You have to learn from it and get stronger in the game and that we did.

"It is a difficult league but we have been very good in the last two games. It is not a bad thing. But we need to make sure that in the areas we can realistically get points we need to pick up points. If we can do that, then we will be fine."

Aaron: Liverpool grinding out wins when they're not at their fluid best is an ominous sign in the title race, even this early on. They finally have something they've lacked for the last few years: a real, solid backbone.

Francis Edwards: Not a bright performance from Liverpool, but as for Brighton, they will live to see another day!

Liverpool midfielder and Man of the Match James Milner: "Brighton were strong, organised and have good players going forward too so it was never going to be easy. But we kept a clean sheet and got a win. We know we can play better but we got the result.

"When teams are as well organised as they are, you have to take those chances. Mo Salah will get those chances and take them. The boys at the back keeping the clean-sheets are so important and that is what is getting you the points.

"It is very early days but we want to keep going and keep improving on stuff to work on so we can become a better team."

Liverpool have done what they had to do. Brighton were full of confidence after their win at Manchester United but Liverpool ground out a result.

There will be times where they play unbelievable football and win 5-0 or 6-0 but there will be days where it isn't going their way but they still grind it out. That's how champions do it.

They will definitely be closer to the likes of Manchester City this season.

GAME OVER. A nervy end for Liverpool but they have got the job done.

And they now sit top of the Premier League table with maximum points. No giant killing this week for Brighton.

Daniel Sturridge patiently teases the full-backs before slipping it into Georginio Wijnaldum. The midfielder flicks it on for Mohamed Salah but his first time strike is way off target.

Amid all that, Joel Matip was brought on for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Oh what a save! Talk about producing when it matters...

Pascal Gross is waiting in the middle of the box as a ball is lofted in invitingly for him to connect with his head.

He does and it's a good header but Alisson dives low to his left and palms it away for a corner. That's what Liverpool paid for...

Mohamed Salah's corner delivery is whipped into the front post where Roberto Firmino is waiting to flick it on.

It almost dribbles into the back of the net but is cleared off the line just in time!

Liverpool almost seal the deal!

It's lofted into the box towards Andy Robertson, who is onside, and he lays it off to his opposite full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The youngster fires an effort towards the bottom corner but it goes just wide!

Daniel Sturridge shrugs off Dale Stephens as he looks for an opening to shoot on the edge of the box.

But he wastes too much time trying to set himself up and Stephens recovers well to block the effort.
