England goal-scorer Trent Alexander-Arnold:
"A dream come true, first game at Wembley and for my country. It was exciting and we want to show what we are made of. Jadon Sancho did well to see the vision of me making the run.
"It's been exciting, looking back on Wayne Rooney's career, he was one of the best players for the country and it was good to share the pitch with him. As a local Liverpool lad, it is good to show people in Liverpool that it is possible.
"He is someone who I have seen when I was younger and tried to replicate, I want to be making the same amount of appearances for England as him.
"I have been watching Rooney from early on, he came on the scene from a seriously young age and he's shown that from when he was young he was scoring goals, doing his job and worked really hard."

England manager, Gareth Southgate: "The players will have taken on board Wayne Rooney's humility, even after everything he has given to the game. He mucked in during training and worked hard in the five-a-sides and in the game he was tracking back.
"We've got really good competition for places and it was a good test for them. We've got a brilliant game to come now, this is what the Nations League is all about."

Luke: Circus over. Back to business to preparing this England squad for 2020. Thanks Wayne Rooney for all you have done
Kyle: I genuinely believe Jadon Sancho is better than what Cristiano Ronaldo was in his first season at Manchester United. More end product. That's not me saying he will end up being as good as Ronaldo but the sky's the limit for him
Joshua: With Rooney now retired I can say its officially an end of a era and the final curtain for the golden generation.

"I was a bit nervous ahead of the game and he came over to me and told me to just express myself because I had nothing to lose.
"Without that talk I might have still been nervous. I never thought I would make my debut at 18-years-old but I just have to thank the coaches for giving me the opportunity to play."

"I think it is the right thing to do, it was a great thing for me, I asked Harry Kane to present me with the plaque and I hope to do the same for him one day.
"My youngest son has never seen me play for England, so tonight was the first and the last, it will be a great memory for us when the boys are older. It is great for us as a family.
"It's my opinion that England are in very safe hands from what I've seen this week. The way they are being coached is brilliant, it's a great group of young players who have a bright future.
"They will go close to being the next team to bring a trophy back for England."

I watched the first Croatia game and it was a strange game without the crowd. There wasn't a lot between them on the night and that was the same in the World Cup. England have changed the system since then but we know Croatia have four or five top players and they know what is at stake.
They are very capable of coming here and beating England. It could end up a draw which is no good for anybody but it will be very tight.
England manager Gareth Southgate on Sky Sports: "I thought our attacking play was really exciting, we had nice interplay around their area and could have punished them a bit more. We were too open at the end of the game but we had young players who gave good accounts of themselves. I am delighted for Callum Wilson and Trent Alexander-Arnold to score. There was a lot that could have been better.
"From our point of view, we are talking about respecting the shirt and those who have gone before and all of the players did that this week. We gave Wayne a week that he deserved.
"It would have been perfect for him to score but we saw some moments of real quality from him."

It will live with me for a long time. It is something which created debate because it was the first time something like this happened, but it is the right thing to do for the players if you achieve and leave your mark on the England team.
"Before playing the game I asked Harry Kane to present me with the award because I believe he will beat my goal scoring record and I look forward to presenting him with the trophy. My youngest son hasn't seen me play for England but tonight he got the chance to do so."
On the missed opportunity: "Another yard to the left and it was a goal, but it is probably better it didn't go in because it would have started a debate of whether that goal should stand. I go back to the States at the weekend. I have got a break now which I will enjoy."
More from Wayne Rooney: "I scored past Brad Guzan a few weeks ago so I'm sure he was in no mood to let one in, another yard and it would have been a goal.
"If I did score, there would have been a debate of whether it would have counted!
"Tonight, being back at Wembley, in front of the home fans, the fans we great, they gave me a great reception."

"Tonight was great, a great way to finish my international career, I thought the lads played great. Unfortunately I couldn't get a goal but I'll remember it for a long time.
"I'm not a player who hasn't played for a year and come back, I've been playing at a high level. I think I fitted in well.
"It's two years since I've played foe England and I'm proud to be the record goalscorer for England."

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, England striker Callum Wilson said: "To make your England debut is a massive honour and as a striker playing with such good players you know you are going to get chances. I missed a few and you wonder if it's going to come but I kept plugging away and thankfully it came in the end.
"I don't let missed chances get me down and I maintain my mindset and my focus. There was a chance just before the goal when Trent Alexander-Arnold slid the ball in and I thought the chance might have gone because I saw Marcus Rashford on the side of the pitch warming up.
"But there was one last opportunity and I managed to get my foot around it which is one of the hardest finishes so I'm delighted it went in."

Wayne Rooney is a legend for England, to receive my shirt from him before the game was a great honour and I got to share the pitch with him as well.
"His chapter is ending now and mine is just starting. I thought the chance had gone, I knew time was not on my side, I saw Marcus Rashford standing there and I thought I had a few minutes.
"It is a day I will treasure for the rest of my life."

It's a great send off for Wayne Rooney and he has had his day, but you have to move on and that is how football goes. He has had an absolutely top drawer career. He would have loved to have won a major tournament with England, and that might be one possible regret.

Jadon Sancho put in an eye-catching performance. Callum Wilson scored on debut so he took his chance. Lewis Dunk did not have much to do, but because of the turnaround ahead of Sunday's match with Croatia, Gareth Southgate was mindful of giving his regular players some rest.
That is why we didn't see Harry Kane tonight. You will probably see nine changes from tonight on Sunday, and I think only Jordan Pickford and Jesse Lingard will retain their places in the side.

I thought England were excellent for 35 minutes and they got after USA. The visitors are a young side and they looked nervous and it should have been three or four nil early on. England started the second half poorly but then they took control again. It's been a good night but they could have scored more.
