  • England will face Colombia in last 16 on Tuesday

  • Belgium will face Japan on Monday

  1. 'Where is the creativity?'published at 22:30 BST 28 June 2018

    England 0-1 Belgium

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

Where is the creativity in that team? Every time Januzaj got the ball he always looked like he would shoot or put a cross in, and he was difficult to handle for Danny Rose. We didn't have that and you have to bring all of the players back in that didn't play today.

  2. 'We could have an army of England fans in Moscow'published at 22:30 BST 28 June 2018

    England 0-1 Belgium

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

I didn't agree with that many changes ahead of kick-off and it was like watching a reserve World Cup game. But they are down the route that was talked about before the game so you could say it's job done. They are going down the Moscow route and we could have an army of fans there in the next round.

  3. 'We looked second best'published at 22:29 BST 28 June 2018

    England 0-1 Belgium

    Dion Dublin
Ex-Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 live

I thought the game would be set alight at some point but it was flat throughout the game. We looked second best at everything and when Belgium needed to go through the gears, they could. Whatever happens from here, as a player, you have lost a football game and you need to pick yourself up again.

  4. 'We are still a long way behind'published at 22:29 BST 28 June 2018

    England 0-1 Belgium

    Chris Waddle
Ex-England winger on BBC Radio 5 live

I was very disappointed by England and Belgium were just superior. They know how to play quick and how to play slow, but England just played at one speed. Belgium are very talented and they are a better side than England, even without Hazard, Lukaku and De Bruyne. It's the first side England have played who have showed real quality and we are still a long way behind.

I think it was sensible by Gareth Southgate. No injuries and Colombia will have learned little from this game in preparation for playing England.

    Will, Oxford.

Great result for England. If we can't beat Colombia, then we can't beat Brazil or Mexico. Best give us a fighting chance.

England head coach Gareth Southgate: "We've been practising and going through strategies on penalties since March. We've been doing studies and having individual practice and we'll go through that in an little more detail now. We're aware the margins are going to be really fine in these knockout phases. We have to be prepared physically and mentally to go to extra-time, and beyond if that's what it takes."

    England 0-1 Belgium

England head coach Gareth Southgate: "I think what it allowed me to do was see players who are now able to push for a starting place or have an impact in that game. There were key moments for Danny Rose in particular, who has been short of match minutes. We know the areas we need to improve on and we're very clear about where we are as a team.

"I know that meant tonight is a little bit flat, but every player in that dressing room knows why we've done what we've done. Bizarrely, because we were through, this was the most difficult game to strategise. We had to do what we believed were the right things. We haven't won the game, but there were a myraid of decisions to make."

  10. 'England have nothing to fear against Colombia'published at 22:17 BST 28 June 2018

    England 0-1 Belgium

    Terry Butcher
Ex-England captain on BBC Radio 5 live

Having watched Colombia so far in the tournament, England have nothing to fear and they can beat them. James Rodriguez looks like he might be injured for the match and it is all in England's hands.

  11. Postpublished at 22:16 BST 28 June 2018

England head coach Gareth Southgate: "In terms of the changing the team, they had a game four days ago in extreme heat. We could have played them again tonight, but you saw Colombia lost a key player, Japan lost a key player. Senegal, if they had gone through, also lost a key player. That was a risk we didn't need to take. I totally understand why people would question those decisions, but we've got to prepare the team in the way we feel right. For us, it was the best use of the competitive advantage we have."

  14. 'Look at the bigger picture'published at 22:14 BST 28 June 2018

    England 0-1 Belgium

England head coach Gareth Southgate: "Of course we have a responsibility to the supporters. The support in the stadium was outstanding, and it's been brilliant back home as well. When you're a leader and you've got to make decisions that are right for your group, sometimes those decisions will be criticised and I understand that.

"As a group of staff, we were clear on what we felt was needed medically, physically and tactically. We've 20 outfield players now who have played in a World Cup, that's hugely important. I think we've still created chances. We had one fantastic chance to tie the game. I know that decision will be criticised, but I'm entirely comfortable with that. Sometimes, you have to make decisions with the bigger picture, and that's what I did tonight."

England needed this result tonight! Hold on folks. It was a very close game and we have to move on now. We play a very good Colombia team next and that is when you can see how far we have come. Well done England, we still have another game to talk about and look forward too. Not like four years ago. Still proud of the team.

  17. 'We'll learn a lot'published at 22:12 BST 28 June 2018

    England 0-1 Belgium

England head coach Gareth Southgate: "We are showing signs of being an exciting team. It's brilliant experience for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to play in World Cup matches. It was a very inexperienced pairing but they both showed some excellent moments. We are young and enthusiastic, improving but not the finished article. Belgium are third in the world for a reason. We've still got some work to do but we're pretty realistic about where we are but we have great belief in what we've been doing over the past few months. We'll have learned a lot from tonight."

  18. 'I really like Croatia'published at 22:11 BST 28 June 2018

I really like Croatia and the way they have played in the group stages. They have won three group matches, look in really good form, and they are in England's half of the draw. Brazil and France are not in full stride but I think there is more to come from them, and that's the same with Spain and Portugal. It sets it up beautifully.

Johnny: Great move by Southgate. About time we had a manager with conviction. Previous managers would have played XI in fear of losing.

Anon: Southgate clearly thought he has strength in depth and I applaud him for being brave.
