Gerard Pique became the 13th Spain player to win 100 caps.

This was the ninth 1-0 win at the 2018 World Cup; one more than the total in the 2014 World Cup group stages.

Spain have won each of their last five World Cup matches when they have been drawing 0-0 at half time, all by a 1-0 scoreline.

All three matches today ended 1-0. The only other days in World Cup history to see three 1-0 wins were 25 June 1982 and 23 June 2010.

Three of Iran’s last four World Cup matches have ended in a 1-0 scoreline - one win and two defeats.

There have been no 0-0 draws in any of the 20 games at the 2018 World Cup so far - the last time that this happened was in 1954 (no 0-0s in the 26-game tournament).

Got some stats for fans of 1-0 scorelines now. But it doesn't make good reading for people who love 0-0s (if they exist).

  10. 'We know we need to improve'published at 21:48 BST 20 June 2018

Spain boss Fernando Hierro:"What I can say is that we have three more points. We knew it was going to be very difficult and, sure enough, it was a very complex game.

"There were times in both halves when things were tough. During the break, we knew we had a plan and I think we carried it out - my players did what they had to do. Iran are a strong team and it's very tough to score against them.

"We knew how hard it would be. But once again, my players have given everything. As a 23-man group, they are very committed. We are one team and that is how we will play until the end here. We know we still need to improve but hopefully we will keep winning as we improve."

  11. Postpublished at 21:47 BST 20 June 2018

If Spain and Portugal both have the exact same result (ie both win 2-0 or draw 0-0 etc) - then the winner of the group will be decided by fair play (loosely speaking who got the fewest cards).

If they were both to lose by the same scoreline, then one of them might go out - but again fair play would decide which one.

Iran would go through to the last 16 if they beat Portugal, Carlos Quieroz's homeland, on Monday (19:00 BST).

A draw would only be enough if Spain were to lose to already eliminated Morocco, and that would probably have to be by more than one goal.

Spain and Portugal just need draws to progress.

  15. 'We are still alive and dreaming'published at 21:36 BST 20 June 2018

Iran boss Carlos Quieroz: "We showed that we were ready to suffer and ready to compete. I felt we deserved a better result.

"There's no doubt Spain play wonderful, stylish football but I thought we deserved more for the way we played.

"But congratulations to Fernando Hierro and Spain. We will learn a lot from this game. If you think of it like tennis, we had one match point today and we will have another against Portugal. Everything is still open. We are still alive and still dreaming."

David De Gea wasn't dominating his box against Iran - he's reacting rather than being proactive. He's lacking confidence I think. If you look at their chances - they all come from crosses into the box.

    Chris Waddle

Spain play in spells - they can't manage the game. There's times when they play brilliant Spanish football and there's spells when they lose all shape and look very vunerable. You wouldn't put them in the top four sides at this tournament, where they normally are.
