Fran: That's more like United but I fear Mourinho will revert to type once Lukaku is fit. His main goal is to prove 75000 people wrong.
Tei: United actually looked like a proper footballing outfit today.

Everton winger Yannick Bolasie on Sky Sports: "You want to show the fans what we have. But it wasn't enough today. In the second half we dropped off after a good first half. It wasn't a good way to start the new year.
"It's been known we probably need a striker. It's a difficult job for any club to replace Romelu Lukaku. It's obvious [we need a striker] but I'm not the manager."

"I moved a bit more forwards in the second half and we did a good job. Both goals are lovely goals, the performance of the team was great, we could create more chances. If you don't shoot you cannot score.
"We are United, if you draw it is a problem, we just want to win."

Everton manager Sam Allardyce speaking to BBC's Match of the Day: "If you gift the ball back to the team like United then they punish you. Here's some analysis for the lads on Match of the Day if you want. For the first goal [scored by Anthony Martial] they back off, back off and back off.
"We needed to put pressure on United and we didn't. Martial takes the ball and lifts the shot with no blue shirt trying to close him down or tackle him.
"In that period of time I wanted to get a sub on but I couldn't get one on soon enough. James McCarthy then comes on and makes tackles and lifts the crowd.
"We have to avoid unforced errors, cut balls out and have to be consistent or a team like United will punish you.
"We haven't been on the training ground during this period apart from shifting the lactic acid from the players.
"It's a shame what happened in last five minutes at Bournemouth and today. Up to then a magnificent performance from everybody, but we need to bring a stop to the run of bad results."

Adam: United made to look good by an Everton side that show little or no ambition. We expected that with Big Sam not having won against Mourinho in his previous 11 meetings - looks like he was more interested in the next game against Liverpool.

Image source, Getty ImagesEverton manager Sam Allardyce on Sky Sports: "No shot on target? That's normal for us. We know where our problems are, the club knew before I got here that was the problem. We're trying to cure that in this window by getting a frontline that can threaten and score goals. Until then we have to be a team who can only win if we get a clean sheet, for me.
"That's a fact, it's one we have to face. We have to be defensively solid. In the second half we decided we weren't going to close them down so we got no ball. For the first goal we back off, we back, off, we back off, we back off and Martial scores. Lads, anyone can have a free shot and score against you if you do that.
"The second goal is our throw in and they score - we really have a problem. We gifted them two goals, they were the better side but you don't gift Manchester United goals like that. James McCarthy came on and showed the rest of the team what to do - tackle. It is still a part of the game you know. He lifted the crowd.
"We have done all we can with Cenk Tosun. Whether that's enough time will tell in the next 24 hours."

Image source, Rex FeaturesManchester United boss Jose Mourinho on Sky Sports: "Our pride, our effort, everything was top class and on top of it we played very well. It wasn't a performance of tired boys, with the worst possible calendar that you gave us.
"Everton had a reaction for five, eight minutes, but we were always in control. We changed our profile because we didn't have Romelu Lukaku and I am really pleased.
"Jesse Lingard - one thing is to be a young talent, another thing is to be a very good player. Some players are not capable of that jump. They go from great potential to normal players. Lingard is giving that jump. He is more consistent, he is adaptable, he understands better the game, he is going in a good direction.
"I don't know about transfers. In this moment we are in trouble, in two to three weeks time maybe we recover and we breathe in a different way. Can we improve now or do we wait util the summer? I cannot say."

We will have reaction from the managers very soon.
Mourinho will surely be in a happier mood.

Matthew: Allardyce has no ambition, a good manager but he knows no tactic other than park the bus and hope to steal a goal.
Shamir: £75m + Rooney for Lukaku but arguably United already had the answer with Martial's direct running in behind and skill. Oh, and he celebrated the goal as well.
Alan: After 22 games last season united had 6 less points and had scored 17 less goals. We're not going to win the league but we're making positive progress - what more could you ask for after the problems we've had in the post-Fergie years?

Darren: Far more like what we are capable of. I hope those doubters stop now.
Tom: Was that booing I heard at the end of game? You get what it says on the tin with Allardyce - he'll set the team up hard to beat, hope to nick a goal but no ambition at all - no chances on target!

United goalscorer Jesse Lingard asked by Sky Sports about his goalscoring streak this season: "I've been pushing myself to get as many goals as I can this season. Playing on the left the boss has given me licence to cut inside. We're only halfway through the season and we have to have a winning mentality."
United midfielder Paul Pogba, who provided two assists: "It's the first game of the year. It was a good win. We played with aggression but a positive way. We knew we could score going in at half-time. We believed in it. We just had to work hard."
On ending the run of three straight draws: "We deserved to beat Leicester and Southampton. This is football. Today we did what we had to do."

Sophie: On current form, Lingard can stake a claim to start behind Kane in Russia next summer. Alli is not playing well, Lallana is not quite yet fit - still a lot of the season left but Lingard has been proving a lot of doubters wrong of late.
Alan: A bad game for the Mourinho haters - United have been (quite simply) superb, pace, power and great goals. Entertainment my friends, entertainment.

It's over.
Great display by United.
Great performance by Paul Pogba.
And great goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.

Pogba has been great today. He's looked nothing short of the £90m player he was bought to be and the Everton players haven't been able to get close to him.

Some of the Everton fans are starting to drift away now. It is back-to-back defeats for Sam Allardyce. Still, Everton are a lot better off than they were when Big Sam walked into the club.

Jesse Lingard is replaced by Daley Blind.
Now moments earlier there was a bit of angry exchange between Lingard and the fired-up James McCarthy (not sure what Allardyce fed him before he came on).
The players legs tangled before Lingard approached the Everton player.
