There are plenty of possible ups and downs to keep an eye on, too.

Sheffield United and Doncaster are hoping to confirm promotion from League One and League Two respectively, while Coventry and Chesterfield are keen to stave off relegation from the third tier for another week at least.

Referee Keith Stroud felt the ire of Newcastle players, staff and supporters on Wednesday when he disallowed Matt Ritchie's successful penalty against Burton and then wrongly awarded a free-kick to the Brewers.

He has since apologised for the error.

Ritchie calmed down enough to score the winner, which put the Magpies back on top of the Championship table.

Even though Brighton have won tonight, Newcastle will end the latest round of fixtures at the summit if they beat Sheffield Wednesday in Saturday's 17:30 BST kick-off.

Blackburn occupy the final relegation spot, but Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, Burton and Birmingham are all nervously looking over their shoulders and desperate to avoid dropping into the bottom three.

All five clubs have home fixtures on Saturday and kick off at 15:00 BST, on what could be a pivotal day at the foot of the Championship.

Brighton need to stay calm here, they need to get themselves more into the game.

There's a stoppage in play as Brighton's Dale Stephens receives treatment following a heavy tackle on him by QPR captain Nedum Onuoha. Perhaps the break in play is just what the Seagulls need.

Oh, almost a QPR equaliser.

A left-wing cross takes a ricochet off someone. Don't know who. David Stockdale keeps it out with his feet.

It's getting exciting. Brighton's Anthony Knockaert makes way for Oliver Norwood.

Brighton are looking edgy.

They give the ball away cheaply and it finds its way into the box to Idrissa Sylla, who is superbly denied by Uwe Hunemeier's block, and then Conor Washington balloons a shot over.

There can't be too many better target men in the Championship, for a situation like this when you're chasing a goal, than Matt Smith.

Get it long and be around for the knockdown - that's got to be the tactic in the closing stages for QPR.

It's getting interesting, though. Matt Smith causes more chaos from a cross, and then QPR make their final change.

Meanwhile, Jamie Murphy replaces Tomer Hemed for Brighton.

When Matt Smith headed straight at David Stockdale from six yards, I was about to say that it wasn't his night.

However, from the resulting corner, QPR striker Smith rises highest at the near post to flick in a header and we're back to 2-1.
