The difference between Germany and England is Germany's possession game is more advanced.

The English are not playing together for a long time but Germans do, so they can keep the result to the end, just by pure possession but England are not that mature.

Germany have a winning mentality. We [France] had the same problem as England - we couldn't beat them.

They were like 'we're going to win, whatever'.

We were all saying before this game that this is going to be a difficult for Ukraine - maybe two or three nil. But it did die out. Both teams looked like they were running out of steam a bit.

Jon Spurling: Ozil is effortlessly superb. A luxury player? No - the better the team, the better he performs.

Mike Roebuck: They think Germany will do an England...of course they won't.

Charlie: The difference between England and Germany at managing a game at 1-0 up.

You can even stretch the comparison further between England and Germany. The sub England brought on to help close out the game let his man get away to provide the cross from which Russia equalised.

Germany's late sub scored the goal that wrapped up a win.

You always like to have a difficult start going into tournaments to keep you on your feet.

I think Germany did what they had to do but there is room for improvement and they will know themselves because they were not that threatening going forward and will know it.

Neuer made two or three great saves, sweeping is the riskiest way you can play and he is excellent at that.

Germany can go really far in the tournament but it can come to an abrupt end because as you can see, every game is tight.

They won at a canter in the second half. It was a disappointing performance from Ukraine. Even with nine or 10 minutes to go they still had 10 men behind the ball. At least go down fighting.

Germany just passed it around and were never in danger of conceding.

Dare I say that the final few minutes of the games in Marseille last night and Lille tonight sums up the fundamental difference that has existed for decades between the German national side and the England one?

Two performances that deserved to win games - one team concedes in injury time, the other scores to seal the game.

Schweinsteiger's late strike is the final act. Germany have still never lost an opening game at the Euros. They deserved this victory as well.

Game. Over. Germany break incisively and decisively down the left with Mesut Ozil picking up the ball and swinging over a wonderful cross to the back post for none other than Bastian Schweinsteiger, with the freshest legs on the pitch and busting a gut to reach the ball and find the net with a shot into the turf and then the roof the net.

That long punt forward should have been dealt with easily. It would have been an equaliser Ukraine didn't deserve. Germany have been the better side.

Whoa... Shkodran Mustafi, what are you doing?! A long ball forward bounces in the Germany half and Neuer comes out to greet but the defender decides to head it - way too powerfully - and is lucky to see the ball dribble past the post after having beaten the keeper. Nervy stuff.
