Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini tells BBC Sport: "It was important to we take some risks but we continued playing. Watford were just defending their goal. It was a lucky goal, it wasn't a corner and it was an own goal. We had two clear chances to score before that.

"We had more possession, attempts and shots on target. We beat a difficult team and deserved the three points.

"Aguero needs two to three games to return to his normal level of performance. The goal was important for him. Before that he made a lot of good moments. I'm sure we'll see in the second part of the season the performances we're used to from him."

  6. 'Difficult to accept'published at 19:57

    Watford 1-2 Man City

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores tells BBC Sport:

"It was very difficult to accept. We played really well but we lost our concentration on a set-piece and gave them the opportunity to come back. I'm really pleased with our performance.

"Against very big teams we have been unlucky. Every time we have been close to positive results. It's very difficult to explain to the players why we haven't won today - we did everything good. Ben Watson was perfect. Today is a very sad, the players deserved more.

"Four months ago when we played Manchester City, we played to protect the team and not concede a lot of goals but today we played to win the match."

  7. 'We will learn from this'published at 19:52

Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores tells Sky Sports: "It's very hard to us. We played fantastic and in the last moments we lose the match.

"We will learn the lesson for the future. The players deserved more. When we have played against amazing teams I have the feeling we have been unlucky. We need to eliminate this match [from our minds]."

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini tells Sky Sports: "This team has a lot of character. We never give up. We continued trying to score, always thinking we are able to score.

"We were losing 1-0 and had to take a risk. A draw was not good – we needed three points. It was a very close, tough game for both teams. Watford are in a good moment. But I think we deserved to win – more shots, shots on target and possession.

"Sergio Aguero's goal is very important. I think he made a lot of better movement than the last games.

"We are not sending messages. It was important to end the six away games without a win. We want to go game by game."

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho tells Sky Sports: “We have started very well in 2016 – the best way to start a new year is winning. We deserved it because we tried to score from the first minute.

“I have a lot of confidence in my team. We tried to keep playing and never stopped. Since September it’s our first away victory. Many games we played well but didn’t win. Football is like that.“

    Watford 1-2 Man City

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart tells Sky Sports: “I thought it was our season to a tee when we were 1-0 down and looked like we were going nowhere.

“Bacary Sagna deserves so much credit for what he’s done for us this season.

“We have to build on this – we hadn’t won in six on the road. It’s not championship-winning form but we’re somehow still in it. We have all the big boys to come to us and some big cup games. We’re in a good place. We’re utilising our squad. We’re not where we want to be but we’re close.“
